@@Roxanneredpanda ...and not only that there is water on the bottom of the ocean, flowing underground, but that it is "cool water, cool water rushing in..." like love, in fairy tales...
@@Roxanneredpanda I had a 640 foot deep drilled well into a solid called granite at my home on a mountain ridge in Old Fort, NC. Water flows through it at 30 gallons per minute to my pump and everywhere... Water flowing underground here in Western NC, way lots of it and thru solid granite rock hundreds of miles huge in any direction at that! Neat huh?

More Songs About Buildings And Food is extraordinarily underrated to me. It's like doing a mystery drug in the bathroom of a Karaoke bar some weird guy gets up there and starts wailing and refuses to leave, and you start panicking when you feel the drugs come on but you gain the wherewithal to buckle in and enjoy it. The transition from Thank You For Sending Me An Angel to With Our Love is absolutely electric, it's one of the best one-two punches I've heard from the opening of an album. The album is weird, quirky, punky, not over-indulgent, but has enough cool production that it starts to feel like a lucid dream. At the end between Take Me To The River and Big Country you suddenly realize that the weirdo doing karaoke is up there crushing some country songs and the whole bar is singing along.
Frank Zappa worst to best.

I think you're missing an important aspect of understanding Byrne's lyricism and personality. You're interpreting him as being sociopathic instead of what he actually is, which is autistic. He's confirmed this fact in interviews and as someone with autism, it's more obvious to me with how relatable his songs are. Take No Compassion, for instance. He says "Other people's problems, they overwhelm my mind/They say compassion is a virtue, but I don't have the time". What he's saying, in a very frustrated, meltdowny type of way, is that he's overly empathetic and thus has to avoid helping people with their issue's because he doesn't have the energy, interest, or ability to truly help. He even adds some sugar coating with the line "It's not a matter of your personality or style". He's not struggling to empathize as you claim here. He cares, but only to the extent his mental health will allow him to. He's tired of helping other people out with nothing in return. I hope someone sees this, because this information is pretty important to understanding these songs
Great interpretation of the song. Highly relatable.

That's a pretty fair look at Talking Heads. Sure, some quibbles inevitably, but overall, good shot. But... but.... you didn't mention the humour. Byrne is not just angsty, he is incredibly funny but you've got to have a sense of irony or you'll miss it entirely. You only have to look at his dances and movements to see that he is highly comic. Thus TH songs stop being "creepy" and instead become hilarious. The secret is all in The Big Country where Byrne expresses his disconnect from middle America - a land where there is no sense of irony. My view is that there is no understanding of Talking Heads without seeing their work through the prism of humour. Thus this video can't rate more than B+. You also have to see the ironic distance between the songwriter (Byrne) and the characters in the songs viz Pyscho Killer. They are not one and the same.
so what you're saying is: light 7?
I feel like what you're bringing up here is the other side of the performative tightrope that David Byrne's songwriting walks effortlessly. Depends entirely on what frame of mind the listener is in when engaging with the works. From one listen to the next, you could be laughing your ass off, but then deeply unsettled. I find it kinda hits in a similar fashion to Don't Hug Me I'm Scared, of all things.
This comment irradiates Rick n Morty fan energy
@@maxxvii2037 I can't tell if it's ironic or just pretentious lol

As long as Revolver is higher than Sgt. Pepper's I'm fine.
Revolver is not only the best album by The Beatles, but also the only Beatles album worth returning to more than once; prove me wrong.

I can’t object to Buildings and Food being ranked lower than Fear of Music or Speaking in Tongues or 77 or Remain in Light because I’m also obsessed with FoM and SiT, and Remain in Light and ‘77 are amazing of course, but I’m really into Buildings and Food. I think it’s a perfect showcase of, as you said, Byrne’s fixations and social awkwardness. The Good Thing, Warning Sign, Found a Job and Big Country are a few faves of mine. They’re not groovy, but they are very tense and strange, for me, emotive and frantic. The neurotic anxiety that can be heard is something I really enjoy. Still tho, i agree all over with this ranking.
I love _True Stories._ If you haven't seen the movie _True Stories,_ then you probably won't really get what the album is about and why it is what it is. That may be a setback for it, but it's really endearing to me. At the same time, within the over all discography, I can't argue with putting it where you did.
I listened to the album before the movie and honestly I think it was just as exciting to watch since I'm insane and remembered every track name so when a song was starting I would tell my boyfriend the name of it and I also did the same with Stop Making Sense. But anyways, True Stories is sooooo good both album and movie soooooooo yummy and delicious.

The live album "The name of the band is Talking Heads" is by far their best. The energy in their live performances lift the already great tracks to even greater heights. Stop making sense is also good but Name of the band is so much better.
Interesting channel and good on you for championing one of the most influential bands of the 70’s and 80’s. Your critique of their lesser albums is an example of how in the 90’s we traded ambition in content for a focus on production and “pitchforking” everything. Artists and albums had relative careers where they made records in context. If they had thought that way, they wouldn’t have, or any other artists or music in general, would be furniture. I’ll watch your additional video (obv you’re a sincere fan) on them and hopefully, in the interest of introducing great music to fans, include the context of the time. I’d probably agree with your list, but listening in chrono, would be highly rewarding to “experience”!the evolution and appreciation. 👍🏽

I gotta give credit to Fear of Music. It was the first Talking Heads album I listened to. What’s more, this is the album that got me into Talking Heads, and for that, I hold Fear of Music close to me alongside Remain in Light.
I personally would put Speaking in Tongues in the number one slot. It is perfectly sequenced, where I feel that Remain in Light (even though it’s the one that everyone says is their best) has some issues with maintaining momentum. Speaking in Tongues is a record of bangers, and I can’t help but dance when I hear any single one of those tracks.

Thanks for this video! I love talking heads and remember riding my bike to tower records and buying up all their albums when i was in 8th grade. "Fear of Music" is my favorite, since the mentality was so different from pleasant/bland california, where i grew up.
I almost completely agree with your ranking of the albums, but I have some unpopular opinions on some of their music. Honestly I feel that Psycho Killer, Take Me to the River, and Once in a Lifetime are not the best songs on their corresponding albums, but New Feeling, Found a Job, and Born Under Punches. Especially Born Under Punches, I mean, that’s actually probably my favorite Talking Heads song in general. I also like Houses in Motion and The Great Curve above Once in a Lifetime. As for Speaking in Tongues, I would agree that This Must Be The Place is the best song, though Girlfriend is Better is a close second.
Born Under Punches is part II of "Punching the Wife Time"
Slippery people??!!! Cross eyed and painless??!!! Come on!!

Buckethead worst to best. Apparently he dropped 30 records in 2014 and if that's true, you're doing all of them.
He released over 170 albums in 2014-15. Melon better do them all
If you couldn't be bothered to even look up his discography, why should Melon have to listen to it all?
They all suck. It is hard even listen to one song without commiting suicide.
Reijo P. Please listen to all the albums then
What about the rapper Viper? He dropped over 300 projects one year
really enjoyed this video! i don't know much about the talking heads, since i've only listened to 77, speaking in tongues and remain in light, but i'm most likely going to listen to their whole discography now. thank you melon
I think your analysis of Fear of Music is spot on. For me, it was my favorite Talking Heads record for years. It's like you said, the band took music as a vessel to explore fear, neurotic tendencies, and irrationality. When I first heard it, the record blew my mind. It was paranoid (Air), gritty (Memories Can't Wait), lighthearted (Paper), virtuosic (I Zimbra), and sonically insane (Drugs...gosh, what an atmosphere). Nowadays, Remain in Light takes the cake. But I'll never forget my introduction to this eclectic blend of perfect elements. It was my first Talking Heads record, and simply put, the most intriguing listen in my entire life.

Way too long and way too much shit. Dude should have written screenplays, honestly. His dialogue is hilariously out of touch in more than half his work.

I HAVE A MEETING AT BOSTON'S PRUDENTIAL CENTER at nine o'clock this morning! Promptly at nine o'clock!

we know we know mollusk, chocolate and cheese, and white pepper toppin
QUEBEC
I don’t know about all of y’all but I really like 12 Golden country greats the songs themselves and the topics are the most diverse and funniest the band has ever made and the country twang guitar sound really good but I’m not dumb my favorite is Chocolate and Chesse
Billy Cobb (personally a better channel in my opinion) made a Ween worst to best. Solid vid.
@@amira-cc6bk No way, Quebec is a much better album than White Pepper. White Pepper is really inconsistent and one of their less creative albums.
Great job -- first time checking out your channel and really enjoyed this. This review got me digging into my old Talking Heads LP's (re-listening to Fear of Music at the moment), and that's the point, right?
I agree with this list. One of my personal favorites is Fear of Music. I’m a bass player who drew early influence from Tina Weymouth, and while her bass playing is exceptional across the board, I think she really shines on Fear of Music.
Travis scott and juice wrld references in the intro of a vid ranking Talking Heads albums, I imagine the venn diagram overlap of fans of these artists is as wide as myself
brownguy903 are u wide?
Cause I appreciate both lol
Fans of music in the internet age aren't so insular bruv

How wide are you???
Best to Worst: Fugazi please
TJ Hastie please...
TJ Hastie nah
The Argument is their best album IMO
Although not technically a Heads record, was just wondering where you would place My Life in the Bush of Ghosts in this list. To me its right up there with Remain in Light.
He'd be more likely to include the catherine wheel over that album but I'm interested to hear both
The song, "I Zimbra" is actually pronounced "ee zimbra". But I agree with the rankings and I also noticed just how different they sounded on "Naked". "Remain In Light" is definitely their best album. This was a great video. 👍🏻😎
10:01 Al Green cover, not Marvin Gaye.
Michael Vessel I was thinking the same thing thank you I’m glad I wasn’t hallucinating
"Fear of Music" is my personal favorite. "Remain of Light" is a close second, but I always thought that its second side was a bit inconsistent. "Fear of Music" is pure fire from start to finish.
Cant agree. Animals and Electric Guitar are duds. Remain in Lights second side (while not everyones cup of tea) had something completely different to offer than the a side, which I thought was cool :-)
I’ve maybe listened to one of their albums through, but I have so many of their songs on my playlist and they’re one of my favorite artists.
"This ain't no party. This ain't no disco. This ain't no foolin around." !!! Also....Remain In Light....absolute best for sure. You nailed it.
WEEN WORST TO BEST
And consider the B-sides! haha
the cure: worst to best
Yes
I get that this is your list on the albums but my heart sank when Naked was mercilessly slammed at the bottom of the list! That album got me into the Talking Heads haha; great video 😁👍
Byrne wasn’t referencing Salsa and Latin pop on “Naked”, he was inspired by Brazilian music and it was authentic in that sense, Brazilian music isn’t salsa or Latin pop, it’s a vast genre in of itself.
his love of the music certainly may have been authentic but not the way it was translated onto most of that record, and i think thats the guys point
@@LordLucario99I think a lot of the songs were meant to be whimsical. Kind of playful parodies of themselves. It’s my favorite of theirs with Speaking In Tongues a close second.
