All of Feranmut act familiar with the Doctor and pretty much imply they have met them before. The whale thing that looks awfully similar to RI whale thing is a feranmut. The Sarkaz Whale seems to have a power to teleport things through massive distances. So likely Feranmut were part of Doctor's civilization's spaceships (probably AI navigation systems?)

I think that Feranmuts came to Terra before ancient civilization and ancient civilization likely discovered about creatures that immune before incurable disease and started experimenting on them. And even that whale-like creature can be not Feranmut, maybe it's something like proto-leviathan or similar to them.

Firstborn Leviathans are also past civilization ecological experiments meant to create an abundant ecosystem on Terra and are said to be kin to Feranmut. Whatever cataclysm hit that civilization led the project off the rails too.

You can't take 1 intesting thing from the plot in complete isolation as a proof that story is actually good. Reunion arc suffered heavily in first 4 chapters due to lack of experience from writers and because it's a prologue, so there was a lot of necessary, but boring world building that tainted the experience(Victoria arc doesn't have this excuse, as foundation is already built). However from chapter 5 onwards it truly opens up, and characters are actually interesting, and so are the "villains": patriot, frostnova, mephisto and faust are all way more interesting of antagonist compared to what we have now. Why do you think excitement for new chapters dropped to zero? Nowadays new chapter release gets minimal amount of attention from community, lower than some regular events and a LOT lower than anniversary events. Compared to before, chapter 6,7,8 were some of the most hyped up things in times of their release. This is 4th chapter of Victoria arc, to put into perspective, if it would be the very first arc instead of reunion, then we would be at chapter 7 or so at this point, and it's still not good and doesn't have strings that pull you into it at all either.
So that is what was hiding inside the core of the Rhodes Island landship, a freakin' gigantic floating skeleton whale. Absolutely insane!!!
