Drone Hits LAPD Helicopter- This Is Why You Should Follow Recreational Drone Rules!

  • Hey, Remote Pilot 101- a bit of a somber episode today from Brennon of Dronr Tech as he wants to touch on the seriousness of following the recreational drone rules that have been set out for our community. Even those of us with our Part 107 licenses are beholden to these rules when we don’t fly commercially, so they’re important to know.
Unfortunately, there was an incident in his own backyard where a drone pilot flying at night hit a police helicopter and he now faces federal charges. Know the rules and follow them because we want to make sure drones are fun, safe, and easy to use for a long time to come.

Minor correction, recreational operators CAN fly at night as long as they have an anti-collision light. And part 107 commercial operators will soon also be able to with some restrictions and rules that were an announced along with Remote Id.

"The other day"? This happened months ago... Yikes, old news, trying to do sensational! Also, you can fly recreational pilots in controlled airspace with LAANC approval. Where do you get your information?!?! Aren't you supposed to represent a prep school.

Also, I'm so confused about the no flying at night thing. Half of these Test Prep channels say you can fly at night as a recreational pilot and half say you cannot. Which is it?

Yikes ~. Hell, I just flew my first ever flight on my first ever drone DJI mini2 yesterday. For that flight, I had a book to log the flight- Got the authorization on Kitty hawk, and followed every freaking rule because of all this crap people are pulling. Even though I will never monetize my channel I have an appointment in a few weeks to take part107. Oh, yea I am in my 50's, So a lot to lose if the faa comes looking for me.

I’m 60 and passed my PT 107 this summer. It’s about the the only thing CoVid did. By being our school being sent home to quarantine, It forced me to stay home and take tutorials.
It will require studying. It was tough. I’m not sure I could pass it today with a crash course. Learn how to read maps!

Howdy B hope you had a fantastic Christmas i myself was very scared to fly until i got my 107 4years ago. Safety is the most important thing to me I don’t think people should be doing range test i see no sense in it. Once i passed the 107
I was out flying with confidence knowing i new the right thing to do and how to do it. I would like to see everyone have A 107 before buying a Drone.

It appears they are trying to legislate out recreational drone flying in order to pave the way for commercial interest. If this new law passes I'll be selling mine and giving up the hobby.

Well, flying at night is a big no no. That all by its self started this ball rolling.

Only with lights on the drone so you know location and orientation at all times. I’m betting he didn’t have any lights so it was a violation.

A new law that just got passed states that your drone must have Remote ID. Make sure you look for that which most drones currently don’t have so you would need to retrofit it. Fly safe and have fun!

The mini is more forgiving, not all footage is equal.
A matrice has more liability than a mini as well.

correct, that is exactly why the FAA is now trolling you tube, and tightening the restrictions on drones. The you tube heros. They scream when they get caught, complain, even launch the Land of the fee statements. In actuality, every time some idiot posts stupid actions done with a drone, he gets a thousand thumbs ups, and the next hero has to out do him. This is what causes pain for the serious drone operators. We pay, as we have 30 grand at a minimum wrapped up in our equipment, we have a choice to install more equipment such as remote ID systems on them, or get rid of them, and purchase new ones. With remote ID any person with a smart phone can see the operators GPS coordinates. So, this is going to lead to crackpot confrontations, and drone thefts. Many folks don't actually know the law, and believe, they have the right to interfere with a drone over their property, or confront the operator while a drone is in the air. Like i said, in another post. I have been filming the mountains in BLM, and actually had people shoot at my drones. I have no idea why, maybe just for fun. They took out a battery, a couple hundred bucks, but could have been worse. Shooting at an aircraft is a federal offense, but many people, even some noob operators don't realize, a drone , is an actual federally regulated aircraft.

Every pack of cigs has a warning. Why dont drones? This would be an easy case to defend.
