Generally good tips. In the State of Virginia unarmed Officers can try to deescalate a situation, make requests, and defend themselves, although no training on defending themselves is ever given or required in order to be licensed, or required by Security Venders. And it is illegal for unarmed Officers to verbally or physically detain someone for a property or other crime, if they do not have arrest authority. While Armed Security can train on OC, baton, taser, and pistol. The legal responsibility of unarmed Security Officers in the State of Virginia is to observe and report. Which puts them in danger. Because that badge isn’t a shield or a stun gun. The danger, low pay and crappy hours, and double jeopardy with the State, isn’t worth it. That’s why I got both licenses and eventually left Security work. Essentially it is cheaper for a business to get an unarmed Security contract, and it is cheaper for the Security vender to find less skilled workers and pay them less. I am a Capitalist, but I am also a realist. Most contracts should have Armed Security Officers. The unarmed Security Officer in this video should have taken out his cell phone and started recording. He then should have told the manager or employees to leave, and then continued to film the angry person. Then he should have called 911 and let Law Enforcement handle the situation. In my opinion how and what he said wouldn’t haven’t changed what occurred. And he definitely should have moved away after the manager or employees had left. If the angry person had decided to approach the unarmed Security Officer then that Officer should tel him to stay back. If the angry person ignores the command to stay back and advances then he would be committing not only an assault upon the Officer, but would be now in the process of carrying out battery. Depending on how fast the angry person approached, I personally would state again for him to stay back while maneuvering into a better position to take the angry person down if he didn’t stop. In my scenario I think after telling the angry person to stay back, OC would have been a good plan. But again unarmed Security in Virginia can’t use OC on Duty. As to the angry person striking the manager or employees, unarmed Security is not legally allowed to strike the angry person in Virginia. And if they fail at restraining someone who is physically attacking someone else than a fight is most certainly on. Which is why little or no training being given to unarmed Security on restraining and defending is just plain wrong. I worked a total of 3 unarmed Security contracts and was hired for one contract as an Armed Security Officer.

The *moment* a tool came out... they stopped, backed up, and basically realized, this mans gonna get me if I don't stop. He knows, if he keeps pushing me and keeps being dumb, he's gonna get fucked up very quickly. Open-hands or Unarmed combat training is great aswell, but the moment he pulls a gun or knife, you're gonna be hard-pressed to subdue him without choking his lights out. Sometimes, the client and their employees, or even the online viewers of video footage like this - and who have never worked as a security officer, just don't understand the limitations of many security officers. I've heard questions ranging from, "Can you arrest them?", to "Can you write tickets?", and I was even asked, "Didn't he see the badge?!" after a client heard my story about an encounter with the State Highway Patrol and myself receiving a speeding ticket on my way to work. As if we were brothers-in-arms, and he should have given me a pass. Each client's needs vary between jobsite. I was a glorified receptionist for most of my security career: unarmed, transferring phone calls, signing in/out visitors, passing out badges, logging any incidents... quite literally the IMAGE of "security," but THEY SEE a BADGE, and that... to them... makes things limitless.
Also, unarmed security, like with the gentleman in this video, is downright dangerous sometimes. I actually took Private Security Firearms training while I was currently working as unarmed (on my own and not through that employer). One of the law enforcement veterans of our class told me boldly, "I would NOT take any unarmed security job! If an intruder ever came to your facility with a firearm, they will SHOOT YOU FIRST because you are the first line of contact!" Too his point, everyone else in that IT and consulting company were behind secured, key card accessible doors, while I was the sitting duck with a phone... alone, at the lobby front desk.

I agree that not physically intervening when someone is only damaging property is a good idea. Now, if someone is beating up themselves or they are running into traffic, Titan Protection and most all other security companies do not have legal authority to go hands-on. At least those security accounts where you don’t have LE authority. I know that many of you on the leadership staff are retired or former law enforcement. As a LEO you can do that; it’s part of your community care taking duties to prevent someone from being a danger to himself and/or others. Security does not have that authority. It’s technically a battery once you touch that person; a legal arrest would justify a battery. The problem here is that there is no basis for a legal arrest if someone is beating themselves up or running into traffic to hurt themselves. If so, would you please cite your authority?

If the guard couldn't de escalate that person to attempt to find out what the issue was.
With continuous property damage the security guard should of advised police would be called. Why didn't the police get called. To hear that this person just walked and nothing happen, that's messed up. Trespass this person. That type of behavior shouldn't be tolerated.

In this day and time, the security officer should have called the police initially and reported this incident to them, and then stood by to protect people if necessary while waiting for the police to arrive. If the guy decides to leave, let him leave and watch the direction that he is leaving in. Don't go hands-on with the individual, because the risk to the security officer is just too high.

There’s something else called proprietary security which is in-house. They’re not authorized to carry any and I mean any items for use of force. I don’t know what the training involves but from defense attorneys pov, they’re not allowed to touch. Anyone from California?

Right off the bat, can tell the security guard has no legit training. He definitely shouldn’t be working security.
As someone thats been through a corrections academy, very relevant to the security field really, the subject displayed two of five reasonable and justified causes to deploy OC and restrain. Technically, four in a non law enforcement and corrections environment and capacity.
If they’re hands off security, clearly is. Then really no point in being there and approaching an agitated and aggressive subject. Hence, observe and report only.
If one is scared to do their job in “this day and age”, and scared of getting injured or anything, then one shouldn’t be in the security services or protection services industry.
9 out of 10 times law enforcement says, move down the road, because no one wants to prosecute and pursue criminal charges.
Hence, in cases of using OC, contact 911 for an ambulance to transport for spray removal and not for police. Unless one says, I want to press charges. Then you request LE. Otherwise, it’s only a medical call.

Many time it’s a warm body with a couple of uniforms, few days of training and minimum pay. Think he’s getting medical coverage when he gets his butt kicked? I wonder if he’s carrying OC spray? Corrections and Police Academies are a different level and I wonder if that’s enough these days.

General policy across the industry is simple You do not go hands on unless there is an immediate threat of severe bodily harm or death to you the client/associate or customer. If they're throwing tissue boxes at the clerk that does not meet the requirements for use of force even though that is a battery It's not going to cause severe bodily harm.
The legal terminology used is forcible felony. It constitutes any felony that a normal civilian would be justified in using deadly force in self-defense or defense of others.
That is the minimum requirement for any physical use of force by security. Anything less opens up the client company The security company to liability for any injuries sustained including death as a result of your use of force it opens up the officer to both the civil and criminal liability for their actions.
To give a very well known example putting your knee on the wrong part of the body even during a justified detainment could land you in prison and cost the company $millions.
