Your tutorials continue to be some of the most helpful that I come across. Not only do you explain how to get the desired result, you explain the why behind every action so that the viewer can use the method later for a different project. Good Job.

Love these tutorials. They are well presented with enough commentary so you know why you are doing something but not so much that you get lost in the technical details. Keep up the good work. Many thanks.

That you have broken down each of these techniques into a ten-minute tutorial is very helpful. So is the clarity of your explanations! Thanks again!

Thanks. This is the exact effect I was looking for - almost.
And you did it clearly without a lot of wasting time.
The reason I said "almost" is I took it one step farther.
First of all if you wait to create a new layer until you select and grow, Gimp will automatically past it into the new layer.
    So:
    1. Type Text.
    2. Alpha to Selection.
    3. Select>Grow>Grow By _px
    4. Layer> Create New Layer
The selection will be in the new layer.
The other thing I did after creating the shadow and text (optional),
    1. Move text down to shadow layer so it's all in one layer.
    2. Use Magic Tool to select the "inside" of the text.
(In retrospect, I didn't have to fool with making the text match the background. Could have used white text.)
    3. After selecting all the text, I then deleted it which left just the shadow.
The reason for this is now I can move the text anywhere and it will match the background.
If hope I explained that as concisely as you did. Also, if you know how to use beveled effect with my techique, please let me know.
Thanks again, just subscribed to your channel.

Thank you for this tutorial. Working on the cover art for a book, with a wood grain background. Pops out nicely. You are a good teacher. It would be helpful if when you give instructions regarding something you explain in more detail why that action is being taken and how some of the options would change the effect. For example, what the numbers entered for displacement values mean, how changing them to higher or lower numbers changes the effect. Similar for the bevel thickness number, etc.

I just fired up gimp and for some reason my text looks really narrow horizontally...no matter what font I use. I tried a wide lookinf font like Ahoroni and it just looks like each letter is squished...the letters are tall and skinny.
Any idea why? I cannot figure this out

I am totally new to gimp (and photoshop for that matter!).....I decided to go with gimp first since ps was so daunting. I find that like most tutorials, they go far too fast, click this move this , now click....blah blah...while this was a much better speed, I am just now getting to know what something is called! I appreciate the slower pace, and maybe after a few months I wont be so overwhelmed...EEP!
