I agree, “mini-masterpiece” is something that doesn’t exist, as masterpiece is a name given for the scale of the figure. The reason “mini-masterpiece” is used as a descriptive term, is the engineering on these bots such as NA Jetfire, Cyclonus, Prime, etc. The paint on these figures, especially from Newage, is very reminiscent of a good MP figure. I guess what I’m trying to say/ask, is what other term, used as a descriptive is best for these legends figures that knock it out of the park on paint, articulation, engineering, etc., that is mostly known as an MP characteristic ?
You could just say that it's high-end and well made and painted. No reason for a new term.
I disagree, it’s all of that but smaller, masterpiece was a scale but now we expect that also as engineering and lately that hasn’t happened especially with hasbro
The reason is technology. If you aren't able to make more accurate figures with more types of material and design tricks at your hand, you're better off selling KO figures. Nowadays figures are supposed to be better than a figure that came out more than a decade ago. Just like how outdated and simple the engineering on the G1 figures were, and yet they were regarded as the best toys at their respective time.
I disagree. Masterpiece is a scale now, but it is also a well engineered figure. Masterpiece did not start with any scale. However, I find most figures on the smaller scale is not as well done as those in the masterpiece scale.
@@gyalis I think engineering came first with masterpiece and then scale became a thing with mp10 setting the standard.
It is worth pointing out that the reason you broke the NBK sniper was because you tried to lift and close the pieces before extended the hinge fully. To be fair, you were not the only one who suffered the same breakage. NBK was quick to post an update on Chinese social media with the clarified step to avoid it (as well as the numerous Chinese reviewers got a sample early that pointed out the missing instruction), however word was slow to trickle to the non-Chinese buyers.

Yeahh I agree with your disappointing figures, my XTB Janssen's shoulders broke during transformation. Really shoddy materials for that one.
Man I almost bought that NBK Sniper Rifle… until I saw your review. Canceled my order after, you can say I DODGED that bullet… eh.. eh…
I dodged the bullet on that NBK Gun guy and that BingToys Shockwave. Both were preorders and both were adequately cancelled.
The only place where my opinion really differs from yours here (and only because I started collecting MP a lot later than you did) is that I think 2022 was a fantastic year for releases. A lot of my absolute favorite pieces were released this year (Raiden, MMC Navigant, XTB Gravestone), and a lot of welcomed upgrades to characters who had figures that were showing their age were released this year (Tesla 2.0, DS Recording Alliance), etc. Again I know we're in different places but I do think it was a strong year overall.
I’m not gonna badger about it, but the MS devastator is way more solid when properly combined. The problem with MS is that you have to find out how to combine it properly without much help from the instructions. After figuring mine out though, I can shake this thing like No tomorrow and it’s perfect

this. i'd even swap ms devastator and superion over in my list. My superion has the front fall off, it's not as stable as MS dev, one of the bots broke on transformation due to what feels like cheap plastic and too much paint wedged in to the joint, overall disappointed, where as MS dev has been great.

He doesn’t have to publish a video, write a paper on it, get it approved by the UN, and god knows what else, just because you think when someone is laughing in their profile picture, they can’t just voice their experience without interrogation about it. If you want proof, buy it yourself, find out how to combine it correctly, and shake it.
yeah, while i agree, it took me several hours just to figure it out; bobby whole review process cannot afford such time, accessibility is a factor; but every figure is on the same point
I am quite baffled by MS Devastator being disappointing in combined mode, as I have it and it's super solid, posable, nothing falls off while i play with poses....sure it's quite a nightmare to combine, and yes the soft plastic make transformation a chore, but I experienced none of the issue he's complaining about, maybe a case of your mileage may vary?

@@davidez4640 well i supposed you own the figure and had penny of time to play with it, refined the combine mode, found spots it was not properly secure. It took me several hours divided in 2 nights just for the combine mode mode(after thatbi love it to death, so menacing and so much personality when you pose him).a reviewer spend much less time than that. He checked the articulation, transforme it and moves on. The good news is every figures are treated the same way and the bad news is accessibility may become a greater factor in "best worst figure" than you would have choose., you said it was a nightmare to transform and combine. To some reviewer that's a "no" regardless of the end result plus he didn't had the time to refined the combine mode to see how it would hold. Once again I agree it looks great pose well and holds well with much less partsgorming than new age (which I think is a super cheat) but if I only let said 2 hours to combine and review it well... I would have a different opinion "great figure but require way too much to be BEST figure".

As Bobby talked about in the past, there are fewer and fewer options for figures to be made into masterpiece while Legends scale still has quite a few characters they need to create. It also doesn't help that masterpiece companies keep releasing characters that we already have multiple figures of.
But overall I enjoyed the best/worst figure choices. Great video
Fewer characters? They've barely touched Beast Wars, Then there's Beast Machines, RID, Armada, Energon, Cybertron, Animated etc..... They've enough characters and character re-designs to keep going for decades, or does everything have to be G1 still? Can't wait for that trend to be over.

Oh dang, suprised to see Newage getting so much love. I'm a Legends collector for the most part, so seeing folks outside the scale enjoy them is really cool. And 100% agree with you about Jetfire, even as a Legends collector I held him in my hand that first time out of the box and went "whoa, this guy's different," and he really is compared to their normal stuff, but damn is he ever a delight, just a damn good figure. To me _New Age_ seems like they're the Best (an easy Top 3) if they want to be. I've only handled A few & to me Prime, the Teletran1 CCC, Cyclops, Octavian (horrible name for Mags) Firefox etc. They're solid w/ spot-on proportions IMO.
@@floorboss @Floor Boss oh, 100%. They're my favorite Legends company, and I have a LOT of Legends figures. They can make some questionable engineering decisions at times, but for the vast majority of their figures they nail the aesthetic, build quality, articulation, the works. Their Soundwave is still one of my favorite figures ever (although those darn arm sliders do NOT hold up to time, oof)
The NBK sniper rifle is how he is displayed in rifle since he broke, was never able to get him fixed

YES THANK YOU. D-Zef is my #1 also. He's just. so. good. I also loved Navigant, Tesla 2.0, and Hannibal.
My most disappointing figure of the year must be Magic Square Optimus Prime 2.0, as i had so much hype for it. It's not a bad figure, in fact it's very good, the sculpt and articulation is amazing, it's super clean and the transformation is easy and fun, and it's probably the most cartoon accurate OP out there. However the total lack of pain, the cheap looking plastic and the overall lack of finish made it feel like a cheap toy in hands, so when i unboxed it i was super disappointed. Also the loose knees made it super unstable. In the end I sold it and kept my MP44 ko, and will wait if they realease a painted version of it. Their new Nemesis prime is already much more premium looking and they also fixed the joints.
It was the n the running for me for different reasons but it was my 6th choice

Bobby G youre criticism of the magic square dev is the exact opposite of everything ive ever felt handling it. Its by far the most stable combiner i have ever handled, the plastic- far from feeling "gummy" ,feels nicely solid, rigid enough to support its weight and flexible enough to avoid breakages.
My magic square I had to glue together in spots… love how it looks but it really sucked combining and holding together

Magic square devy is hot garbage and a exercise in extreme frustration putting it together if you had a good experience you win but even in the legends groups people hating putting it together.

Top 5 I got this year in general:
1. Titans Return Triggerhappy
2. Generations thrilling 30’s Roadbuster
3. Studio Series Dropkick (car mode)
4. FOC Soundwave (the voyager version)
5. Generations Thunderwing or Generations Perceptor
Most disappointing/worst I got this year:
1. Studio Series Jolt (was really looking forward to him but was extremely let down by both modes)
2. Legacy Buzzsaw (bug head won’t connect to the torso)
3. Studio Series BB Wheeljack (all the joints are loose)
4. Titans Return Highbrow (the propellers were just broken and it wasn’t what I was expecting in a good way)
5. Don’t really have a fifth one I consider worst but I’ll put APC ToYs metallic Battle Angel (the paint is just chipping off so much and the vehicle mode won’t go together).
Alright, just got some more transformers and my number 3 pick for worst transformers has changed to the Autobot clones 2 pack.

The one figure I would add to best of, or best surprising, is that Magnificent Mecha Optimus Prime. It looks as good as the ThreeZero figure, has fairly intuitive transformation, looks really good in alt mode, has great sculpt work, and is painted from head to toe, with amazing articulation. Always love the year end list. Hope you and your family are having a fantastic Christmas season.

Thanks Bobby for keeping up with the Transformers content this year, even if the franchise may not given you as much fulfilment as your other interests. I started watching you for the most critical MP TF reviews in the game 5 years ago. Since then, I've come to gradually care less about individual MP TF reviews and more about your discussions videos From them, I've learnt how to separate the objective and subjective quality of any TF figure, make the most out of the pieces I already own, navigate the diversity of experiences, arguments and opinions across different parts the TF fandom, and crucially, find a place in it where I am comfortable in.
That said, I bought nothing on this list but still enjoyed the review. As an IDW2005 and MMC follower, happy Dzef got some love! It looks right at home with the pantheon of MMC's all time greats like Carnifex and the DJD.
Man I wouldn't be able to choose between XTB Hauler, IF Grimlock, or Zeta Raiden. All 3 just blew me away this year. I can't get enough of the XTB Inferno/Grapple/Hauler mold, it's an absolute game changer for the 3rd party game. IF Grimlock came out of nowhere and took the community by storm, such a clean original design that's beautifully executed, but then Zeta came out of nowhere and did God's work giving us a Raiden. The individual bots and combined modes blow the TTMP out of water and the passion for the characters really shows.
Can't wait for 2023!
A non-transforming figure is not a Transformer, it’s an action figure or a statue.
I hate that Mmc DeathSaurus mine was broken from factory. Shoulder pins popped out. Mmc sent me new ones but they don’t lock. I just want to throw it down the street at this point

I ended up getting my first third party figures. Got a Nemesis Prime, a Devastator, and a Predaking. Now I’m looking into a Zeta Bruticus but idk which one I like. I’m a huge fan of the newer ZA-08, I just want the more boxy chest piece and the swappable heads. Then I looked into the ZA-07 and wasn’t a huge fan of the color scheme of the limbs and the feet. I liked the grey thighs wished it was a silver head and grey feet. Vortex is too dark for me and brawl looks like color of vomit. I liked the chest piece and the swappable head styles but I like the colors more on the original and the ZA-08 but the original from what I can see doesn’t even exist anymore and is WAY out of my budget.
The mdlx Bee made me want to finally have non-transforming TFs, the Prime makes me want to quit while I'm ahead. Fair and balanced list overall.
Any true og transformers fan knows that beast wars is an abomination of a toy line and cartoon. They look cool in the new movie coming out but when they first dropped bk in the day it almost ruined transformers for me. Idk why but I despise them in every conceivable way. Hopefully this movie will change my mind.

Good choice for figure of the year, it was a long time coming but they really knocked it out of the park. I actually grabbed the G1 version too and I still prefer the IDW one :).
If D-Zef is the last mole in the Reformatted line, it’s one hell of a high note.
Shame, though: there are still so many characters they can and should do.

I'm happy with my ThreeZero Premium scale Optimus Prime but it's my only figure. I have nothing to judge it against. I just pose it and place it. It does exactly what I want it to do which is look great and not fall lol.
My #1 is......NewAge Air Guardian aka Skyfire. However, it's the one and only transforming figure I bought this year.
But it's done so well!
NewAge hit the best list twice in 5 slots. Boom!

Maybe it's changes in my own collection and interests but these "best/worst of..." lists just seem to be more and more milquetoast each year with 2022 being the most bland. Looking at the various lists, if collecting in 2022 had a color it would be beige. It's not just BS, it's everyone. Anthony's Customs, Nerzoic, Mad Hatter, etc...
The only Fans toys figure I've ever had a problem with was Koot. As a figure, he was GREAT! As a... What ever he turns into, He was GREAT! The transformation however. OMG! I wanted to tear my own head off
The few of these that I'm familiar with, I have to concur. I have to agree, Jansen was way overhyped. All of the X-Transbots Hauler molds look amazing, I'm glad that they released then, albiet late.
I disagree with Jansen being the worst. Mine has zero issues, feels great and it looks way better than Fanstoys Tesla 2.0 IMO. Yes slight stability issues with the feet but it's been in the same pose on my shelf since I put it there.

i really have trouble seing new age optimus as a good figure, sure paint is great, but that chest hanging like an oversize corset and the visible feet in altmode etc, ugh...sometimes when i read threads, i feel like newage is like fan toys in terms of fans blindness (recent new age ratchet altmode)

You’re literally the only one I’ve seen whose damaged their Jives paint during transformation, but then you’re also the only person I’ve seen break so many figures. You man handle them, I don’t think intentionally, just your hands were built for wrenching not for dexterity… I have Burns from Simpsons hands so I am more delicate with my stuff…. That said, Jive being in the “the worst” of the best category just shows to me how good we are in this hobby in 2022!
