For those who miss Simon, I've heard he now has 300 channels now and is doing them instead.
We are all Simon. And Simon is one with us.
This dude is just as good.
@@geographicstravel It’s true. Mr. Beast is just Simon in a wig.
His hair reminds me of Eddie Munster
4:30 - Chapter 1 - The martian volcanoes
6:45 - Mid roll ads
8:50 - Chapter 2 - Shield volcanoes
13:20 - Chapter 3 - Changing the nature of mars
17:15 - Chapter 4 - The escarpment
20:45 - Chapter 5 - A walk into space
23:25 - Chapter 6 - The caldera
24:50 - Chapter 7 - Exploration of mars
26:20 - Conclusion
I miss Simon.
Who?
@@archstanton6102 I'm guessing it's one of the guys we saw that died.
Me too
For those wondering “Simon” was the previous host of Geographics
He has a similar channel called Places if you'd like to look into it. I'm assuming he started that one after leaving this one
I for one am thinking Eric is doing a great job.
Sure, I’ve got no problems here either. True, it’s always weird at first but you get used to it.
I was also super ****ing rusty...I ended Science Get to focus on writing like a year and some change before getting behind the camera again. lol
Only complaint/feedback I have is that the new guys seem like they’re copying Simons talking style a little too much at times. Dunno if it’s a recognised style of presentation or what but it does throw me off, at least initially. Doesn’t have an impact on the quality of the content though, it’s always excellent.
I really like Eric’s personality.
@@shinkicker404 lol you are totally right, his cadence is just like Simon’s…to be fair the guy worked with him for years, he may be doing it subconsciously
I'd love to hear about the canyon, actually! As a space buff, I find it more fascinating than Olympus Mons, for some weird reason.
Anyway, learned a lot in this video, like that tidbit about Vesta! And I agree that it makes sense that these mountains were once islands, but who's to say. Anyway, loved the video! Thank you, space cowboy!
I got a few other anthology stories I have to finish, but after that I'll get working on it.
Hey there space cowboy, I really like your narration. Keep it up.
@@geographicstravel YAY!
@@geographicstravel Looking forward to it.
I would love to have a video about the canyon! This is fascinating stuff!
Mars Attacks is the best. My Favorite Martian was a goofy sit com (which I loved to watch back then)
I shall respond in Martian...Ack! Ack! Ack!
Eric is really good, if we can’t have Simon this guy does a fantastic job with his own style which is very important
I hope you can do deep dives into Hellas Planitia, which has the deepest point on Mars, as well as Ecchus Chasma, the (now extinct) gigantic waterfall, not to mention the Northern polar basin which is thinner than the rest of the crust elsewhere (this could've been the location of Mar's ancient ocean. Thanks, and looking forward to more related episodes 😊
Always liked Olympus Mons and the Marineris Valley, very cool stuff.
Good video!
Olympus Mons would be far more dramatic a volcano to the novice if it weren't so very broad. Its great breadth at its base creates a visual distortion, flattening the image. If it were more classically shaped and had steeper sides, it would be seemingly much more astonishing.
Great video, thank you
Fun fact ... On Google Earth there is a Mars setting, also a flight option. Switch to Mars and enter flight mode, and you can fly around Olympus Mons and in the calderas. It's a little tricky though, as I can barely get enough elevation to summit it.
Great upload everyone keep up the absolutely amazing work love the Chanel
Great info and presentation
great video. Thanks!
Glad you liked it!
I'm an astronomer but never particularly cared about Mars until I read Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars trilogy. I've been obsessed since... anyway great video!! Looking forward to more about Valles Marineris & the moons 👀
18:38 I miss the "Speculation Alert" Star Trek alarm, Eric.
Haha! Someone remembers that!
Definitely do Valles Marineris. You're doing a good job.
It's on my list. Just gotta hit a few deadlines with other projects and I can get on it. :)
keep 'em coming.
Yes please, more areology content would be lovely!
You win the comment section for using that term.
Your comment gave me flashbacks to Kim Stanley Robinson's RGB Mars books
Hey eric! Love to learn with this channel! Thanks ❤️❤️❤️❤️
My pleasure!!
Them: Mars is uninhabitable!
Me, rereading the Dune saga: iNtrODucE tHe SanDWoRm
Bravo! Discover more stories
I am playing a bit of RTX Red Rock on my phone but it's not running well, wonder if you'd like to give thoughts on the game and how accurate it has things for colonization on Mars.
I heard that while this mountain is super tall, if you were to hypothetically be able to walk up it you wouldn’t even realize you were ascending anything because it’s so extremely gradual
Except where the caldera is
Its the size of Arizona. If the slope was averaged you would notice, its 25km tall and ~300km radius. It would be just over 8% slope.
I can’t deny Kuzma makes the team better. But I think it would be in no small part by giving quality forward depth in Barnes.
Thank you.
Two impact craters on Olympus Mons have been assigned provisional names by the International Astronomical Union: the 15.6-kilometre-diameter (9.7 mi) Karzok crater and the 10.4-kilometre-diameter (6.5 mi) Pangboche crater.
A lot of people (including presenters on YT) don't know that the thought of there being "canals" was a translation error. (From what Schiaparelli wrote "canali", intended to mean "channel" as a wide body of water.)
I do love me some Olympus Mons info.
This is cool
21:50 Or, to put it differently, climbing up Olympus Mons is literally like climbing into the heavens, into the realm of The Martian gods, just like climbing up Greece's Mount Olympus here on Earth.
Edit: Also, due to the "Gentle" slopes on Olympus Mons, and the relative flatness of the area around you at the top of the mountain, is it appropriate to say that climbing Olympus Mons, and standing on its summit is like climbing up, and standing on the summit of Sunflower Mountain in Kansas?
Wow, great!
I'd love to watch one on the Valles Marinaris.
I love mr horror man! This presenter rocks
Thanks! I finally found something that helps me keep my sinuses clear during recording too. Captain Salty's Hot Nuts...no that's not a joke.
@@geographicstravel haha love it😂
Eddie Munster knows his shit.
i love simon as much as the next guy but im not gay about it, yall are great
I like Eric a lot but I have a question. Has Karl stopped doing videos? If he’s on another I’d like to keep giving him love as well.
He's working with us behind the scenes (editing and writing). He didn't want to keep presenting like he was, as it was adding a lot of stress onto his plate. He still has the option to present if he wants to, but this is what he wants right now. :) He is on Wikiweekends right now and he streams most Fridays on his Twitch. www.twitch.tv/karlswood
Yes, Valles Marineris would a great video!
I'm honestly shocked that this wasn't written by Eric - when I saw the video title, I was like.... yep, I *know* who is gonna be the host on this episode 🛸
Totally looking forward to a Phobos/Deimos episode, and not just because I recently finished Doom Eternal 😇
Also, your ad-reads are improving sir 🙂
I would have written this one, had I the time. I'm doing a lot of the behind the scenes stuff and working with my publisher, several magazines, and whatnot for other writing projects, so I've been absolutely swamped. I made sure to throw in a few Science Get esque things in there, since I know a few of my old Sci-getters (nope, still doesn't sound right) watch here too. :)
i have waited for 4 years for this video it finaly happend horray. i ones used to me a mars fan.
As Arnold would say, we all need to get our asses to Mars...there will be more Mars videos. Lol
You peapole are awesome. Keep it up with thoes videos
I like it better when Vegeta is behind you.
It looks like an ancient shield. A round shield. An egg yolk… Dude, we don’t need 3rd grade comparisons multiple times
Yes to the largest canyon video
I would love for you to write that script!
And Karl with a “K”?
Give the guy a break, Please don't be petty.
Kurt with a K
Stop. You might hurt the Guy’s feelings with a ‘H’
Tell Jade hi and I will watch a second time since the first time was to see if Jade would appear. Yes I'm a crazy cat lady.
I'll be sure to tell her.
I like this host better tbh. He has a better voice
The dutch scientifuc community has concluded that its poles mainly consist of vodka...
If it was bourbon, I'd already be there.
Simon made this so much better
It took me a while to figure out that you meant The Azores.
Model the climb, it would be very boring. Due to Mars's closer horizon it would seem that you were on a flat plain. Only at the escarpment and caldera rim would you perceive any detectable topography. This would appear like a straight slowly declining slope extending horizon to horizon. All in all very Kansas like, boring climb.
You're a good host, same or better as simon.
If i can listen to you while i play online game and understand and remember info youre good. Weirdhistory new host is what not to be, monotome af.
I like Eric. I dont feel like i have to drink tea, brush my teeth, or start a revolution when he is the host.
If i can't have Karl Smallwood on a second channel, I'll happily take eric, i thoroughly enjoy his presenting style on these videos
Karl is writing and doing editing work behind the scenes. :) I convinced him to do some asides to add as inserts too.
The largest volcano on a runty little planet.
Did John Travolta grow his hair back?
It's the largest known mountain in the solar system, doh!
Give us that follow up yo.
Yes please write it and do the video!
📍 Vesta is a planet. So is Pluto. They are minor planets.
Vesta is no longer considered a minor planet. Ceres is still, if I'm not mistaken.
We have to leave the planet. Eventually, Earth will be doomed. There is no escaping it.
I love Simon, but this guy isn't so bad.
Olympus Mons. Mars' pimple
A pimple on jupiter is bigger than this
Simon where are you!
That means you could land and launch satellites straight into orbit. Sounds like a good way to get those samples back.
Good thought but. Mars's atmosphere is so thin it would make little difference in fuel consumption. Definitely not worth the energy and effort to get there.
Why wouldn't you release a satellite into orbit before landing?
@@geographicstravel Not saying you SHOULD, saying you COULD. And youre completely ignoring my other point about getting stuff OFF planet. ppl are right, I miss Simon.
Valles Marineris!
Astrographics best graphics :D
We're working on more. I just wanted to make sure our best writers were on it. :) I have endless ideas for them.
@@geographicstravel Awesome! They're among my favorite vids!
...is it me or does the cover pic look like a shot from a Dr Pimple Popper video?
We must probe Uranus.
..................oh my.

We have a dragon ball fan! 🤘
Rest in peace, Akira Toriyama. :(
16:58
Mars attacks is GOATed!
Absolutely! Grandmother took me to see it in theaters when I was a kid. I have no idea what she thought she was seeing, but she was pretty quiet after we got in the car. lol
I'm surprised this isn't on astrographics
SIMON!!!!
formerly Nix Olympica.
Hetzer
Famous French 75
Erik?????
I miss Simon
So yeah, I dont watch many of the videos now without Simon, but i doubt it feels great to the people working hard on these videos when everyone in the comments won't stop talking about him. He has 11 channels. You can go find one of them and leave this channel to move on
Do it
01:54 Santa Claus Conquers the Martians is the worst movie I have ever seen. I would rather watch Steven Seagal's entire filmography than see that Christmas turd again.
BUT the MST3K version is hilarious!
Eric is doing a good job, but he's not British so I can't believe anything he says, lol!
Jokes suuuuuuccccccckkk
It took you till the 4:26 mark to say Olympus mons. perhaps you should rename the video and redo the thumb nail.
Boo boo boo
Where is Simon
Is Karl done?
He’s still working for them but he’s behind the scenes again. Presenting wasn’t his thing.
He'll pop in from time to time with scripts he's edited too. So he'll always have a voice on the channel. And any time if he wants to present, he still has the option to.
@@geographicstravel thanks
Mt everest is the highest mountain ...not the tallest
Skip 4 minutes... youre welcome.
This isnt the same without simon. No offence sorry
changing hosts has really killed the show for me. I’d prefer Simon, as I still watch his other content daily when I’m working. I was just getting used to Karl, and then they change it again. I find myself rewatching old episodes 10x more than any new episode.
Who is this guy?
Who is this scrub and where is Simon
Bring back Simon!!!!!!
I would say you did a great job, but you either need a different mic, or you need to bring it closer to your mouth.
We're building a studio. Might switch to a shotgun mic to have it out of frame.
@geographicstravel don't think it matters if it's out of frame, his voice just needs to be done justice. I'm glad you guys are keeping up on things despite Simon's departure.
Where is Simon and his blazer?
He left about 9 months ago.
This presenter is monotone yet comes across as insincere
Simon come back. We miss you. Nothing against this host, but it's not the same. Good video though.
Simon is not coming back, but try his channel Places.
Simon and one of the channel owners had a falling out. The owner made a one off mea culpa video and the channel moved on. No one dropped Simon. He left on his own and won't be back.
