Nov 18th, 2014 I took an Amtrak train to Philadelphia. The issues raised are legitimate, but solutions need to be beneficial, not regressive. Passenger rail needs to improve to European standards to be competitive rather than constraining car traffic and forcing people to use the current obsolete and inferior rail by necessity, for example. Eminent Domain needs to be more vigorously challenged by legal means. Pollution standards, highway safety stats and fuel conservation have steadily increased substantially for decades and are all the best they have been in history. With still room for improvement. I wasn't really happy with my half hour commute on I-95, until one day, I had to use public transport. Took 3 hours, walking a mile, then bus, then train, then bus again, then walk ½ mile. The odds of me dying in this event are far lower than me being killed in a car crash or killed by some crack head on the streets of any number of B. C. Cities for the 20 bucks I have in my wallet. We sail a 53 foot blue water ketch and I worry about a rouge wave far more than this scenario. Rouge waves at sea happen far more often. Hitting one of the thousands of shipping containers that are floating semi submerged around the ocean are even more of a nightmare. They float just at the level of the surface depending on the buoyancy of the cargo . You don’t have a chance of spotting them unless you sea a wave breaking on them. Cascadia is pretty far down the list on things that are likely to kill me.
