The Mount Thor Disaster

- In the Summer of 1998, two elite climbers would be locked in a de-facto race to make the first solo ascent of the highest vertical cliff face in the world. One of the men would complete this historic ascent in triumph, while the other man wouldn't be so lucky as to escape Mt. Thor's mighty slopes with his life intact. This is the story of that fateful summer.

Mountain climbing like this might be for some people, but I'm having... Nunavut.
Sorry, couldn't resist.
ahh
well done
the first challenge is even getting to Mount Thor.
I was about to go to bed, but thanks for dropping this video just in time. I even put my headphones on the desk and was getting ready to get up from my chair and go to my bed, until I saw a notification from your channel, in my mind I said, oh yeah, finally a new upload from Mr. Morbid Midnight, I'm gonna watch it. Your voice and pace of narration are absolutely perfect to help me sleep. Never stop with these videos. I've used many of them to help me fall asleep, as an insomniac, your channel is beyond a blessing for me to finally help me sleep peacefully.
Me also although I need to watch two back to back cuz i need more time to fall asleep
Haha Me too. Trying to fall asleep but here I am.
My dreams often controlled by the audio of whatever vid, lol.
Poopypants
I always wonder if creators hate hearing that the details put into all of this goes unheard by ppl using it for sleep????
I listen to the ad and intro and the background information as background noise while I get high. Then, when the story starts and I hear a name I like I go "Yeah this dude is gonna make it" and then I listen to see if my dude makes it
What 😂😂😂😂😂
How can anyone sleep like that on the side of a mountain? You've got to be kind of crazy.
Agreed, though I think the crazy starts well before you're actually sleeping on the side of a mountain.
You got to be a little crazy to be there to begin with.
The more u climb and experience being at height, the more desensitized you are and it becomes easier, most climbers I know were originally afraid of heights, it’s about fear exposure, but not all climbers use port-a-ledges or sleep on multi pitch climbs (:
Yeah there's no way in hell
average solo climber haha
Nunavut is a territory** not a province, thanks for featuring our glorious Mount Thor!
🤓
I was wondering how they stayed so many days on the mountain. Thanks for including that pic of their sleep setup.
How can they sleep on those things?
@@straightup7up Very carefully.
The are roped in still, it's pretty safe
It is called a portoledge
Mate, you've easily become my favorite CZcams channel. I've watched at least one video from you every day for the past week, but I'm now procrastinating falling asleep even though I have classes in the morning because your content is so awesome. Thank you for sharing all of these people's stories and please continue to upload and make sure their names are not lost to time.
Midnight, another fascinating Canadian climbing story worthy of your treatment is the Mount Caubvick tragedy of August 2004
That's a cool looking cliff. I imagine the view up top is incredible.
You have the best voice for the absolute sleep relaxation without being boring. Man, you should do some voiceover for my CALM app! Thank you. ❤
Great video! I enjoy this channel very much. FWIW, Nunavut is a territory, not a province.
I watched a video recently of a few guys climbing and skiing the couloirs on the opposite side of that valley. It's a beautiful area
I've flown through this pass. Truly amazing and beautiful.
Thanks for posting this story . Understandably most posts are about Mt Everest. It is interesting to hear different mountains.
A race to the summit. On your marks, get set, _Go!_
You go, I watch! 😄
Always play at 1.75x speed to hear these videos clearer, amazing content but i cant even focus with how scratchy and slow the talking is.
Have to hit 10 minutes somehow
If they're taking 2 weeks to get up it, where are they going to the toilet?
In bags that are then stored in sealable tubes.
Another fine video, Midnight. Thanks again. 👍
❤ hope you had a great Thanksgiving weekend thank you for another great video
Thanks for the graphic showing the route. Sad story.
I love your stories and sometimes I love falling asleep to your voice! 💚
Great research!
How do these guys carry their food and obtain water being on a shear cliff for weeks?
Also, what about going to the toilet?
The great thing about my perishing on K2? Nobody remembers I had Leprosy. 🎉
Holy crap, Lyman Spitzer was amazing! If you don’t know, he was an astrophysicist who invented the concept of a space telescope. Wow!
I take solace in the reality that before he fell he probably looked out upon a site few people will have seen, from a vantage point maybe a few dozen have been doing what he loved, there are worse ways to die.
Sunday night at midnight schedule is the actual best o7 bless you
I never feel bad for these thrill seeking climber mountaineers when they perish, it's the brave rescuers, is feel bad for. good video.
If I cannot stand up the whole time and walk, I’m not interested.😂 That looks like a never ending climb with ropes, screws, etc. How do you even go to the bathroom hanging off the side of a cliff for days?
With the bathroom thing....that is why you should never stand around at the base of a mountain.
Very carefully 😂
I gotta poop! BOMBS AWAY!!!
Wall like urinal, aim and purge
1:53 the vertical face faces east, not west. Thank you for posting. Please excuse my correction.
It looks like on side is 45 degrees whilst the steep side is overhanging at 105 degrees
The joy of victory and the agony of defeat.
So the search team rapelled from the summit? How did they get up there? Helicopter?
I liked the rip’s of the past, a picture.
Nunavut is not a province but a territory, love your video
Poor Go😢
RIP Go you will forever be ones of the cool kids❤
Nice one. I would have liked to have seen some pictures of Go. I do understand though how difficult it is to navigate Google Japan. If you ever need assistance with that, my daughter can help.
Serious question - when sleeping/resting on a Portoledge where do climbers go to the bathroom? Do they have to go in a bag and carry it with them, or do they let it drop to the ground below??
Thanks again friend.
This story would make a good movie
i bet i can can fall off thor way better than you guys
May he RIP
1:16 holy shit😮🫨🤯🌋😶🌫️🤠that looks like it could be the anvil of a god💯somewhere, somewhen.
Yup another cool vid ❤
0:49 is this a popular spot for base jumpers and wing suiters and other such lunacy enthusiasts?
Man, the fact he was knocked off the mountain and then his line cut by another rock…. That’s the stuff you see in movies and think “that’s just ridiculous, it wouldn’t happen that way.”
Crazy story.
Go, Go, & Went!
If there are massive chunks of rock frequently falling from it, is this and other mountains in general actually getting shorter over time? Of course most of the rock wouldn't fall from the very top of the mountain and decrease its height... but some would have to eventually, right?
You mention the rescue team's plan to repel to Go's last sighting. I wonder why that wasn't the first consideration?
Love you thanks!
What’s your background music?
good video but a slope cant be 105 degrees, do you mean 75 degrees? if 90 is vertical, 105 is overhanging....
The mountain really didn't want him there 😢
Mega titans dragons bodies fossilized long ago. The term is nucleophilic substitution, flesh into limestone and granite etc.
Never been this early before. Let’s gooo
So the mountain literally assassinated this man, slicing his rope in two! 😮
ON OUR WAY TO 70K!!!!!!!!!!!
So, Jason challenged Go to a race... but then just started climbing a month before Go even got to the base of the mountain? That's kinda weird.
In climbing, you may be "racing" to the top of a feature only in a matter of words. Who ever gets to the top first is the winner, but there is no arranged starting position or a gunshot to signify to start. Just go and climb it before anyone else and you win the race.
Time attack?
....
@0:14 noon_evet my friend, get it right cause we Canucks won't have none_of_it !
NOOOOOOoooooo........ Abe
I'm not trusting a single rope or bolt/hole with me life 😂 silly rock climbers
They don't usually trust just one, either.
Nah... Alex Honnold should free solo that with a pack of cigarettes and a couple of chocolate bars
Daughters going to baffin island this month l will tell her this story and hope no polar bears
Giant tree stump obviously
Hey guys! Are you in bed like I am? lol
Yeah 😂
33 days?!? How could you even carry enough food water and toilet paper with you to complete it?
I like your videos very much But I wish you would not use the dissolved effect. It's a little jarring
No one tell alex honald
❤
Look, I love your videos and have watched dozens and subscribed. But could you not use the word "however" every fifth sentence?
Iirc it's Noo-nah-voot
Always bet on, Red White and Blue. 🇺🇸
Well done Jason.
Always bet on the one that starts weeks earlier😅
@@markstevenson6635nothing more American than cheating 🦅
That mountain doesn't look natural.
wtf
Bruh
You owertrying with your voice. Speak with your throat not with your nose, that way your voice will sound deep and smooth, right now when you speak through your nose it sounds high pitched like you have a cold and your nose is closed. Im not hating just suggesting as deep voice goes better with content like this.
I’ll never understand the fascination with climbing when you can easily charter a plane that can take you to greater heights. At least he went out doing what he loved.
Meh seems not too bad
Another excellent episode from an extremely excellent channel, thank you Terror Twin, tragic the young man lost his life, but he lost it doing what he loved, how many of us will be able to experience that type of personal achievement!!!🙏😢🏔️❣️
NUNE-A-VIT..is the pronunciation
Nu-na-vut, source: I'm an Inuit from Nunavut
Nice vid, thanks.
Crazy story.
