This video completely understates how completely insane Tom Scioli's Transformers vs. GI Joe is. The guy is a mad genius and I don't know why they gave it to him, but I'm immensely happy they did. I genuinely cannot describe the events of anything that happened in it, because every single issue moves with a pacing sufficient to snap someone's neck, and the continuity is actually a maddened hybrid-monster of the two that's about 30% New Gods by volume. And that's before getting into the fact that Scioli intentionally draws it to look like an old 70s comic, complete with sun damage.
The only way to explain it is that it's like if someone gave a kid a bunch of Transformers and GI Joe toys, and then told them to make up a story, and then wrote every single thing down and sent it to the ghost of Jack Kirby and told him to make a comic out of it.
As someone that finds the joes boring you had me at new gods. So the idea it channels the ghost of Jack the king Kirby sounds wonderful. Now to track it down.
I have heard so much about that series...the abstract art/ or throw back art kept me from looking at it. Got to check it out.

I feel like the main issue with GI Joe's popularity really comes down to the concept itself being heavily tied to America's military, and people's attitudes toward the franchise may be affected by opinions of the real world force. I'm actually very curious to know what people from non American countries think about it.
When Takara brought the original figure to Japan as Combat Joe, it faired poorly due to tensions at the time. Then UK branded the line as Action Force, which did poorly too.
As a kid I loved G.I. Joe as a toyline because of its articulation.
I think the show never aired in my country bc of its theme so I really don't have a lot of attachment to the IP, but yeah, as an adult everytime I take a look at it I associate it with gender roles and propaganda, not bc of the property itself, but it reminds me that toys are made to teach children what to think since prehistory, so I don't feel particularly excited about learning about them.
That 60s spy/ sci fi twist sounds more interesting to me tbh
Agreed, G.I. Joe is rather American-centric for the most part, and is basically just about soldiers vs. Terrorists, as opposed to the more fantastical nature of giant alien robots that could transform into vehicles or animals.
Another massive nail in the coffin for the Joes would be videogames such as COD, which has already supplanted G.I. Joe's niche of "soldier media marketed to children". Because of this, I feel the upcoming G.I. Joe video game Hasbro is working on would be the best chance the Joes will ever get, considering every other major media the Joes attempt have failed.
+Doktor Infinity, Im Honduran born and raised, born 1980, I loved GI Joe ARAH, all my cousins and friends love and loved GI Joe, people have gone to see the GI Joe movies (he thing is that a they are simply bad and none really catch the essence of GI Joe, armored suits???), as a non US National I couldn’t care less whatever had to do with military, the GI Joe ARAH concept IS and forever will be cool!! @@twistedgaming9185 I don't think Action Force did all that poorly over here. It wasn't the juggernaut that Masters of the Universe, Transformers, or Ninja Turtles were but it was in the range of like, Thundercats or M.A.S.K.
11:05 "Cybertron is attacked by Joe Coleton, the original G. I. Joe from the 12 inch toyline." So, now he's like a giant?
Uh no, he's based on the character from the bearded G. I. Joe, the one with the kung-fu grip. In some continuities, he's either the founder of the G. I. Joe team or the inspiration that led to the creation of the team.
Yep here from the movie too. Not sure how to feel but I am on board with it for now.
Yo Joe and Roll out has to be the most 80's phrase ever spoken.
Honestly, considering Hasbro is struggling to reboot the GIJoe franchise, they could just connect it more firmly to the Transformers juggernaut for support.
Edit:yes, I heard, you can stop saying I predicted it.
@George Costanza Wait are you saying they've done reruns of the vintage GI Joe figures or that they're just popular secondhand items?
@@Calvin_Coolage Similar to what Hasbro has done with Star Wars The Vintage Collection, the retro series includes 3.75-inch scale super-articulated action figures and vehicles that come in vintage-inspired packaging with retro Hasbro branding.
@@ajclements4627 I might need to look into those. I always wanted to collect like the first three waves of those old 80's 3.75 inch figure. Of course being this was back in 2005 good luck with that but still.
@@Calvin_Coolage I did want to collect GI Joe myself, but I was already into SW when the 3 3/4 Joes started. Luckily, my brother collected them, so we’d have crossover wars between the two. The only thing I have left is a 5 figure 25th anniversary set of GI Joe. If only we had a time machine, we could go back and buy our childhood collections again.
Honestly, G.I Joe should just be retired. Its woefully outdated and the lack of support for the armed forces in recent years will make G.I Joe disappear permanently.
Marissa Fairborne is Flint and Lady Jaye's daughter? Mind blown!
Ahhh crossovers basically it's like a toybox you take one toy from one franchise take another toy from another franchise and put em in a beat em up.
I know I'm not the only kid that did this
yeahh
Yep! With these exact toylines to be precise! 1986 was great!
My brother and I did that with the Transformers and Gobots.
It's what Hasbro thought initially when rebooting the series: there was no bad guy in the original line, thinking kids would simply use other toys as bad guys. When they were scrambling for idea for the evil faction, one Marvel staff blurted "cobra", which formed the basis of the Cobra organization.
I think all kids do that old and new generations I did and my Nephew and Nieces do the same thing. Just imagine all the crossovers kids came up with and all so when Brothers / sisters / cousins and friends played together. There has got to be interesting combos there.

If you look into the GI Joe wiki, it brings the characters from the cartoon M.A.S.K. as a go between of Tranformers and GI Joe. It even covers Action Man and Joe Colton. Surprisingly, it blends really well.
I hope we are gonna get a Hotshot episode soon, we got Bumblebee and Cheetor so lets get the last kid appeal character (that matters)
in the Japanese version of Armada, Micron Densetsu, his name is Hot Rod rather than Hot Shot.
Transformers are convoluted lol
Technically we did already with the Hot Rod episode. His name was changed to Hot Shot because hasbro didn’t have the rights for the name Hot Rod for a long time after the ‘86 movie
@@JustAnotherNerd850 Actually, it's deeper than that, which warrants a Basics episode. Long story short, Hot Shot was originally the name of a character in the RID 2001 cartoon based on Stepper. For Armada, Hasbro didn't have the rights to Bumblebee's name, so they named the yellow bot Hot Shot, eventually combining the two bots as the series continued.

This episode really means a lot to me. My father and I would always take apart old 80s and 90s vehicles from the GI Joe line and repaint them, making new stories and characters constantly. I was either lazy or a genius though, because I wanted to recolor some as famous autobots and decepticons.
I thought I was so smart making a power glide ratler, teaming up snake eyes with the aligned continuity Wheeljack, and overall just having a good time.
Point is, there’s a lot of crossovers that go far outside Hasbro’s licenses that need to be known about. Star Wars, Marvel, DC I believe, Mr Potato Head, Hello Kitty, and many more.
I really do think this single topic can become an entire new series of some sort, looking at the crossover aspect as a whole between Transformers and many other franchises.
Til then though, I am simply content with the knowledge that my Powerglide actually has an official toy.

G.I. JOE: Now raise your hand If You've Seen the New Movie :D¿?
I've never felt Transformers needs to be in a shared universe. We have a whole species of characters in the Transformers. On top of the Nebulons, Quintessons, various Transformers colonies etc. It frustrates me when the movies have done little to nothing to really develop and explore all these characters yet then try and market a Transformers cross over with G.I Joe and other properties.
@Matt Borel The Transformers Cinematic Universe was derailed due to The Last Knight's disappointing response.
I kinda hope they fully reboot it in a few years, but it probably won't happen
@Matt Borel Hasbro had the opportunity to reboot earlier since the final cut of DOTM essentially ended the film franchise. Even Michael Bay said he would step down from the franchise as director, but unfortunately, they wanted to continue until the fifth entry, and if the Bumblebee film didn't succeed (since it was releasing as the same time as Aquaman and Mary Poppins), the franchise would've been done for good.
Agreed. There are already hundreds of characters in Transformers, they don't need to import any more.
Well it looks this might finally happened in Live Action
Tom Scioli's Transformers vs GI Joe is easily my favorite of these crossovers
It's just this pure bashing of toys together that packs so much into every issue. There are so many individual panels, like "Gun God meet your avatar" or the quiet "Yo Joe" in the illusion world, that are ingrained in my mind
Excuse me? Cobra commander called himself old snake? What’s next? Snake eyes calls himself Gray fox?
This is especially timely in light of Lorenzo di Bonaventura's recent comment that a cinematic crossover between Transformers and GI Joe is "inevitable" at this point.
