  • Made this video after checking out others videos of replacing these fuel pumps. The other videos were very helpful with my replacement and added at few shortcuts and tips of my own in hopes this will help someone else having to do a fuel pump replacement on a 1995 to 2005 Astro or Safari van.

    I just did mine the same way. But I went to the junkyard and got the Same floorboard material to be placed over my cut hole, then used Silicone gasket making material to seal. It down. I couldn't use a cutting wheel because my tank was leaking a lil bit , I marked my hole and used a shortened drill bit and cut and filed the cut edges smooth in about 2 hours , looks professionally done!!!!!

    The tanks are fairly easy to pull. Some years ago I pulled the tank to do a fuel pump on my 97 Safari. Today I replaced the fuel pump on my 05 Astro with a tank pull. The difficult part of removing the tank is getting most of the fuel out to make the tank lighter and more manageable to lower out on a jack. 26 gallons of fuel is about 180 pounds. My wife just filled it when it went bad. lol.
    Even though the tank pull isn't that bad I am debating with myself about cutting the floor for when the pump I just installed goes bad. That's why I'm looking at videos like this.

      Yeah, I had a hard time convincing myself it was okay to cut a big hole in the floor of my van. After replacing many fuel pumps by pulling the tank we tried something different on my son's 96 Silverado. We removed the bed hardware and wire harness and tilted the bed up from the drivers side and changed the fuel pump in half the time that it took us on my 98 Silverado. So I figured I would try a shortcut on my van. So glad I did. Fuel tank on it was almost full as well. Saved me a bunch of time and the floor is just as solid as it was before the repair. Thanks so much for your feedback.

      @@g3garage I feel bad for people who have to pay a shop to replace the fuel pump. They make big profit on these jobs charging $500 or more for labor alone.
      If I had a lift and a trans jack this would be a 10 minute removal and chances are that I would be done in an hour or so. How do they even justify that much in labor?

      I will say you saved yourself around 1,100.00 by pulling the tank yourself that's what my mechanic wanted for the whole job! , so u cut a hole from the top and went to the junkyard and got the Same floorboard material and it covered the hole perfectly, I just matched the stampings , then put silicone around bthe cut hole and installed the cover with 3/8 long # 10 sheet metal screws

      @@Deucealive75 Hell a mechanic wanted 1100 .00.to do the job , but that's here in California the libtard state so I did it myself by cutting through the floorboard , I went to the junkyard and cut out the floorboard out of another Astro to make a perfect fit metal panel used 3/8 # 10 sheet metal screws to hold down the panel after I placed silicone around the cut edges

    My pump had 3 plunger rods , they sold me one that had two plunger rods and it was the wrong pump so I went back and got the new correct one. They make several different pumps for that application and or different year of Astro vans

  • @notsureigaf
    @notsureigaf Před rokem +1

    Be careful using those connectors in this kind of application - many of them use crap solder, and with the fuel tank being a pretty vibration-prone area you could end up with cold joints after awhile.

      Unfortunately I no longer have this van. But I did find other videos on CZcams that talk about the location of where to cut this opening. If you look closely in my video you can see the placement of the factory spot welds that will give you a good idea of where to cut. Hope this helps.

      Just drill a small inspection hole to find it

      It's been a while since I've done this, but if I recall, all 3 lines have different size fittings. Regardless, you should mark each one before you remove them to be sure. Because if you do accidently switch the return and supply line, the vehicle will not run. Hope this helps.

    • @g3garage
      @g3garage  Před 2 lety

      I watched several other CZcams videos as stated in my video. This gave me a general idea of where to cut the floor.

    • @johnalarcon5006
      @johnalarcon5006 Před rokem

      Make a small inspection hole like I did to locate the top of the pump, use a short drill bit so you don't drill through the top of the tank I actually cut a drill bit short, the locking ring is hard to remove but they sell a tool online to easily remove it

    Great video. Thank you for making it. What symptoms prompted you to change the fuel pump?

    • @g3garage
      @g3garage  Před 2 lety

      The symptoms that I experienced were hard starts are first. It would crank for 5-10 seconds before starting. Changed the fuel filter and that helped for about a week. Then one morning it wouldn't start at all. Searched CZcams and found several good videos but none really went into detail about how to make the access hole or how to close it back up. Very glad this was helpful for you. Thank you so much for your comment.
