AFI's - 25 Greatest Movie Musicals

- čas přidán 24. 07. 2024
- This list was made and revealed by the American Film Institute in September 2006 in The Big Picture-AFI's Greatest Movie Musicals.
180 films in competion and only 25 have entered the list of the greatest musicals of all time.
Music is Gone with the Wind by Arturo Mantovani & His Orchestra.
Music used during the event in which was presented the list of the films. - Krátké a kreslené filmy
All the AFI-listed all-time 25 greatest musical movies are truly monumental, memorable,& marvelous. But it doesn't mean that the other popular & well-made musicals had been disregarded,missed-out,& discredited.Yet we're all still entitled to consider which movies that we'd seen to be our all-time favorite,highly-entertaining,& very-significant ones. Almost all the people around the world really love to see movies particularly the Musicals - that will delight, inspire, excite,& amuse them.
The Music Man is one of the tightest, most cohesive musicals ever. The songs all show Meredith Wilson's incredible mastery over his medium. Why that musical isn't on this list I simply can't imagine.
My list:
1. Meet Me in St. Louis
2. The Sound of Music
3. Cabaret
4. Singin’ in the Rain
5. The Wizard of Oz
6. 42nd Street
7. Fiddler on the Roof
8. A Star is Born (1954)
9. West Side Story
10. Moulin Rouge (2001)
So glad to see that Miss Judy Garland's three big films made it on here...OZ, STAR and ST.LOUIS... good to see Julie Andrews and Barbara Streisand too
The sound of music will always be my favorite. With music man a close second. The sound of music was my father’s favorite movie. And he was a strong tough man. He loved the story along with the movie. It grew on me over time.
Yeah, go Judy!!!
From my perspective, the three MGM produced musicals included by the AFI: An American In Paris [ probably the greatest representation of Gene Kelly's dancing artistry on film against a backdrop of top level Gershwin music ] Singin In The Rain [ iconic dancing by Kelly and O'Connor with an assist by Reynolds ] and Minnelli's The Band Wagon [ Astaire at his late career best with wonderful Dietz and Schwartz music ] are the finest musicals. My Fair Lady and West Side Story are also superb.
I'm so happy that Singin' in the Rain is number 1!!!
Although there were some glaringly obvious mess ups, sound of music and mary poppins are both in the top ten. thats a win for me
The Greatest Movie of all time is the Sound of Music, West Side Story, Singing in the Rain, The Wizard of Oz.,
Nice list, but why the heck are they playing the music from Gone With The Wind, instead of selections from each of the musicals? That's really dumb!
I wondered about that too!
The list is from AFI, but the video is made by a CZcamsr.
Maybe its copyrighted?
5:08 Singin' in the rain rules 😍
This is the first CZcams video I've see which has the correct movie at #1. Singing in the Rain is the best movie musical of all time.
My list:
1. Singin in the rain
2. West Side Story
3. My Fair Lady
4. The sound of music
5. Mary Poppins
6. The King and I
7. Gigi
8. An american in Paris.
9. Hello Dolly!
10. Seven brides for seven brothers
My two favorite things...Gone With the Wind and Musicals:)
Here's how the Top 25 list came about, courtesy of AFI:
The American Film Institute (AFI) in Los Angeles, California conducted its 2006 polling on the Greatest Movie Musicals of All Time, to highlight the 25 Greatest Movie Musicals of All Time.
A ballot was distributed in 2006 with 180 nominated musicals to a jury of over 500 leaders from the creative community, including composers, musicians, film artists (directors, screenwriters, actors, editors and cinematographers), critics and historians. Due to the extensive number of memorable movie musicals in American film, jurors were also allowed to write in votes for musicals that did not already appear on the ballot.
Judging Criteria for Selecting the 25 Greatest Movie Musicals:
MUSICAL - A feature-length American film* in which music and lyrics significantly advance the plot, develop character or are otherwise integral to the film narrative. *AFI defines an American film as an English language motion picture with significant creative and/or financial production elements from the United States. AFI defines a feature-length film as a motion picture of narrative format that is typically over 60 minutes in length.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE - Musicals that have left an indelible mark on the history of the moving image - through innovation in song and dance, visionary narrative devices or other groundbreakingachievements.
CREATIVE IMPACT - Musicals with songs that evoke the memory of its film source, thus ensuring and enlivening both the music and the movie's historical legacy.
LEGACY - Musicals that continue to inspire artists and audiences alike.
Lia, thank you so much for seeing the video again, this time in its original version!
You did a wonderful job on this video, Mirko. So glad to see it's still here.
I'm surprised to not see Fiddler on the Roof.
YEEEEEEESSSSSSSS...
Great List!
I would have some slightly different choices, based on preference; but there is nothing to scoff at with these selections!
1. Singin' in the Rain
2. On the Town
3. An American in Paris
4. A Star Is Born
5. The Band Wagon
6. Mary Poppins
7. Swing Time
8. Seven Brides for Seven Brothers
9. Yankee Doodle Dandy
10. The Music Man
Thank you for watching and to have appreciated it! Good luck with your tributes!
No Fiddler on the Roof, No Easter Parade, No Phantom of The Opera?... And those are just off the top of my head..Also if you're going to use Disney cartoons, you better add Cinderella.. And the glaring miss of Oklahoma and South Pacific... "I'm as corny as Kansas in August, high as a flag on the 4th of July"...
Oh and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes ... "Diamonds are a girls best friend"
+impassable OR rather Pinnochio and Dumbo. They should be there instead of the campy crappy Grease & others like Funny Girl...
Wonderful list, though I would put The Wizard of Oz at the top. It is truly an inspirational film with a message that resonates today as clearly as it did 74 years ago..
Yes, Ingrid I wanted to re-upload the video with the original music.
I'm glad you enjoyed it. A great weekend for you and all the best!!
Thank you very much Craig!
Thank you very much Mitch!
Thank you very much Steffi and have a fantastic weekend to you too!
great list pretty much covers everything and number 1 is correct
Thank you very much Jose!
Can't stop loving Gene Kelly... Wooooooow
Thanks very much!
I’ve seen a lot of lists like this but this one is probably my favorite. There are obviously going to be some amazing musicals that aren’t on this list, but despite that, I think this selection is pretty awesome🥰🙌🏽
this was a wonderful tribute to movie musicals!!!!
In the previous video I have received many comments, which were not agree on the ranking. Make a ranking is a very difficult and complicated. You're the first person to mention A Chorus Line. A good film! Of all the comments that I remember, no one has ever mentioned this movie. Thank you for the note and support dear Monica!
Awesome !
Thanks for sharing, Mirko :-)
Irene.
I love LOVE singing in the Rain!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A fantastic weekend for you too and thanks!
Thanks to you Irene for watching and to have appreciated it!
Grazie Franco, sono contento che ti piacciono i film musicali!!
Awesome this time and Awesome the last..great work my friend!
So long as Mary Poppins ( the best musical ever made) was mentioned I'm ok
I agree, that and the sound of music
This is Awesome!
You probably still remember the previous version that I uploaded almost 3 years ago.
I had re-upload the video with this original music. Thanks Deb!
This is AMAZING
Just wonderfull .
Thank you for watching!
in my opinion the Les Miserables movie had a lot of issues, yes there was great moments ( like Anne Hathaway), but some singers could have used some work and transitions were strange, and could have been more entertaining.
Yes, I recognized the video right away. take care. ;)
Thank to you!
there should be fiddler on the roof, phantom of the opera, oliver, and a couple of others i cant remember. but other than that i love all of the rest and love your tops picks.
South Pacific!? Fiddler on the Roof, Annie Get Your Gun, Oklahoma... so many great ones!
Thanks for watching!
Sure Alan, I know your favorite movie musical is Top Hat. As you know, unfortunately I still can not receive TCM in my satellite TV. When I made this video it took me over 1 month to research the films and for montage. Thank you for your continued support!!
Well, I think people will be never very agree with rankings :D! You know, this is so subjective! I wish you a fantastic weekend, dear Mirko!
Grande musica, una buona fusione di immagini, con un magnifico finale; il film, cantando sotto la pioggia : il mio preferito!
The music of the previous version was very nice. I had doubts until the end whether to delete it and load the original. But if you remember the music covered in the final, dialogue of the film Singin in the rain. Thank you again!
Excellent choices but A Star is Born definitely beats Singing in the Rain and how could you leave out Easter Parade?
It's not his/her list. It's the American Film Institute's list.
www.afi.com/100years/musicals.aspx
What, no Gigi? That was so charming
wonderful
i feel Dancer In The Dark is worthy of a mention, but even a musical layperson like me knows the Sound Of Music is the big kahoona of musicals jousting with The Wizard Of Oz.
FUNNY GIRL IS THE BEST
My vote is for Minnelli's An American In Paris [ Gene Kelly at his most creative and appealing}; Minnelli's The Band Wagon [ Fred Astaire at the zenith of his talents and a great Dietz and Schwartz score ] Gigi [ a great Lerner and Loewe score, which I don't believe made the list, and Cukor's My Fair Lady [ preserving Rex Harrison's classic performance, even though the film is marred by the absence of Julie Andrews' original stage creation of Eliza Doolittle.
Just out of curiosity why on earth are they using music that isn't from a musical to go with the top 25 Movie Musicals list?
The music is the same used during the event in which was presented the list of films.
@ TheBigValley Mirko - that still doesn't explain why that music was selected.
This video looks familiar, but it is so well done. Of course I love the music. I think it's hard to pull off a good musical. There has to be a story you can relate to and good music. I agree those are some of the best musical picks. ;)
Great list. I wouldn’t change it, just add one more classic. “Rent”
I love this
This is a great new musical "Part of Something Bigger (The Twitter Song)"

what about Hello Dolly...
A seriously dubious list. Where are Les Miserables, Oliver, Jesus Christ Superstar, White Christmas, Babes in Arms, Flying Down to Rio, Phantom of the Opera, South Pacific, Fiddler on the Roof, Oklahoma, Holiday Inn, Can Can, Finnegan's Rainbow, The Court Jester, High Society, Kiss Me Kate, Paint Your Wagon, Two Weeks With Love, Desert Song, The Student Prince, Babes on Broadway, The Toast of New Orleans, Anchors Aweigh, Damn Yankees, Camelot, Blue Hawaii, Pajama Game, Calamity Jane, Broadway Melody of (1938 or 1940), Maytime, Rosalie, Balalaika, Ship Ahoy, The Chocolate Soldier, Streets of Fire, The Merry Widow, State Fair (1945 or 1962), First Love, It Started With Eve, Brigadoon, The Fleet's In, Annie Get Your Gun, The Great Ziegfield, et al. Any of the foregoing are more deserving than seven or eight of those listed.
in the west side story sequence, the guy on the right is soooo cute. He has cute eyes
Wish victor/Victoria was on here
Lynda Jaeger SAME
Oliver was a best picture.
West Side Story - number one; The Bandwagon - number two; and Singin' In the Rain - number three. Just to add my corrections.
donald sepanek that's bastardization of this sacred list
Me through the whole list-
Mkay...kay... hey, I know that one! Kewl... kay...kay
By the end-
But.... Little Shop of Horrors.......... D:
I highly disagree with Grease. It's one of the classics with Sining in the rain, the wizard of oz, and the sound of music!
1776 should be on the list. Also Willy Wonka, Oliver
wonderful list!!
but where is breakfast at tyfannis , rocky horror picture show and RENT?
The Wizard of Oz and The Sound of Music should DEFINITELY be above West Side Story. Otherwise, great list
+cajayson8301 Ebert nailed the correct opinion on WSS- see his review at Roger Ebert.com...
I’d put West Side Story 7th or 8th
cajayson8301 Nope. The only musical movie better than West Side Story is #1.
Odd that they're using music from a non-musical for this.

In my opinion there should appear "Calamity Jane". Additionaly "The King and I" should be put higher. But everybody like other types. :)
Uhm, Les Miserables, The Phantom of the Opera, Annie???????
Pajama Game and Oklahoma should be on the list.
Good list. But where is Shirley Jones. She was one of the best.
As much as I love Gene Kelly and Singin' in the Rain I think that number one should have been The King and I.
*Rocky Horror Picture Show has left the chat*
this list was made in 2006 Sweeney todd was released in 2007
Wonderful video, Mirko! I'm not totally agree with this ranking (I've missed "A Chorus Line" and I think that Funny girl, All that Jazz and My fair lady should be in better places) but you did an excellent work, dear friend! Hugs, Mónica
Chorus Line didn't even make it but All that Jazz did? I find that very odd.
YES YES YES YESYES YES YES YESYES YES YES YESYES YES YES YESYES YES YES YESYES YES YES YESYES YES YES YESYES YES YES YESYES YES YES YESYES YES YES YESYES YES YES YESYES YES YES YES SINGIN' IN THE RAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dump Moulin Rouge and Chicago and add Astaire and Rogers' SWING TIME and GIGI.
Damn right.
Yes
Dump Chicago
Seems funny for AFI to list the top 25 greatest movie musicals and then don't use footage from the actual musical! LOL
where's Fiddler on the Roof?
Why is Chicago on this list?
Haven't seen Moulin Rouge. Show Boat great call. Haven't seen Guys and Dolls. Beauty & the Beast- WTF? Haven't seen Seven Brides. Grease- WTF? On The Town- started to see it and probably really cool. Yankee Doodle Dandy- haven't seen it. Band Wagon- haven't seen it- probably over-rated. Funny Girl- WTF? Top Hat- Great Call All That Jazz- started to watch it maybe be over-rated but can''t say 42nd Street- Great Call Chicago- Never seen it The King & I- Never seen it, probably too old school and not vintage enough for my tastes Meet Me In St. Louis- a hilarious classic American In Paris- never seen it, probably a major classic My Fair Lady- over-rated & no Julie Andrews Cabaret Never seen it, probably over-rated because of Liz Sound of Music- very amazing & underrated Wizard of Oz- well of course West Side Story WTF? (see Ebert's review for the correct call on this one) Singin' In The Rain- Classic but not #1 of all time...
Over-all assessment of AFI"s picks- they mostly blew it but love they got stuff like Show Boat on the list. BTW no Rocky Horry Picture Show? WTF?
I enjoyed reading all your comments, and felt the same about most of them. But I'm fine with "Singin' in the Rain" as number one.
Michael Nicholson agreed on the my fair lady assessment... I'm still having trouble with the casting issue... and how many years has it been?😂
Fiddler on the Roof. White Christmas
Breakfast at Tiffany's is not included among the 180 nominated films. It is not a musical film. The Rochy Horror Picture Show is in the list but did not enter among the top 25 musical films. Rent has not been named among the 180 films.
This list is of 2006.
some of my favorites are not included… camelot richard harris vanessa redgrave, carousel, oklahoma
