    When I worked at Siemens facility in Poole (Formerly the Royal Ordinance facility that was served by Creekmoor Halt) in 2010, there were still some rails and a point (embedded in concrete) were still present next to old WW2 ammunition storage buildings and loading dock inside the facility nearest the road.
    These rails haven't been used since the facility was sold to Plessey in the 1960's.
    What were the exchange sidings is now a works car park.

      Thanks. It was a bit rushed this video. I was planning on trying something similar around what was Broadstone station.

    An excellent video showing the lines old route. Nice job with lining those pictures up with the real scenes. You would not think there was once a junction there with all those buildings! Think it is safe to say that line sadly won't be making a return. Interesting to see that road follows the old track bed. Even through that halt too! Best some of the passing cars though you where a speed camera! LOL! Great work and thanks for sharing!

      SDJR7F88 Thanks very much mate! Glad you liked the comparisons with the pictures! Shame really, as it would've been fun having a preserved line less than 200 metres from my house. :D The flat ground created by the track, was pretty much perfect for basing the road in.I did get some really weird looks from people in passing cars, looking dazed and confused. Glad you liked the video. :)

    They should reopen this line, as also the whole S&D. Parts covered by roads could have overpassing viaducts (cf. the Jade Line of São Paulo underground which is built over the road). I am preparing a list of lines to be reopened, to send to Better Transport, and the whole S&D has been included as a 'key line for national integration', together with the Great Central and the Ruabon to Barmouth line. Someone should start a petition for 'Bastard' Beeching to lose his peerage.

      As much as I would love to see this line resurrected, it would take numerous miracles - especially around the Broadstone-Bournemouth segment. While I understand, and largely agree with, the resentment of Beeching, it is worth remembering what he simultaneously allowed thousands of volunteers to achieve. Had steam not been abandoned, and so many lines axed, we would not have the scale of the preservation movement we have now. We would not have so many spectacular preserved railways operating such machines.

    i kind of wish we still had these lines. I lived in Westbourne Bournemouth and my home was right next to where Bournemouth West station used to be. It is now car park and coach park Queens rd There is a pub there until recently called Railway Inn as i recall which is the only remnant of this transport history. Sad really.

    The line from Holes Bay Junction through Broadstone did not close with the S&D in 1966 but stayed open until all traffic to Wimborne ceased in 1977! My brother Danny helped himself to a “platform 1” sign from Broadstone station and is now in a garden in Fife!!

    Great video. I've seen the pics before. But good to see with relevance to the actual places as they are now. The last bit is actually wrong in this video. After the half it went up onto the embankment. The old rail bridge and line is still there as a cycle way. It comes out just next to the top of the road. But still good to see.

    • @TheSouthernerYTChannel
      @TheSouthernerYTChannel  Před 6 lety

      Cheers. The line on the cycle way was the Broadstone - Hamworthy line. The road actually lies on the site of the Broadstone - Poole line. They ran parallel on approach to Broadstone, with the Hamworthy Line remaining on the embankment as the Poole line declined down gradient South of the station.

    The buildings on the industrial estate are getting a bit old now so they would have to be replaced at some point as will the sports centre in Broadstone. The road can easily be replaced and it is not very busy most of the day.

    • @TheSouthernerYTChannel
      @TheSouthernerYTChannel  Před 6 lety

      While a handful of the buildings are falling towards disrepair, they still house prosperous businesses; who rather than move premise, may find it cheaper to renovate their respective buildings. As for the road, as a local, it only appears as 'not busy' due to the ease of traffic flow at either end, but the amount of cars that use it is substantial. It serves as the main artery between Broadstone and Poole, with no real alternative route that can hold the level of traffic.

    • @ladylibertyuk9270
      @ladylibertyuk9270 Před 6 lety +1

      There is very little traffic in the video and there is a dual carriage that runs parallel to it which is where most of the traffic goes. Even the housing estates either side do not have easy access to it so replacing it with rails wouldn't cause too many issues. It seems to me that the road is there to preserve the trackbed in case it is needed again for railways. CPOs can be used to buy the buildings on the industrial estate but there is a way around them. Check it out on Google Earth. I am local too so I do know the area. It's never really busy when I use it either.

    • @TheSouthernerYTChannel
      @TheSouthernerYTChannel  Před 6 lety

      The video was filmed over the course of two days, both early afternoon on a weekend in Winter. I also selected gaps in the traffic to film, to reduce the noise encountered in the video.
      During the school runs and rush hours, I can testify to the traffic levels, having sat in numerous queues at Broadstone roundabout. The dual carriageway "Waterloo Road" itself only serves as a direct route between Fleetsbridge for the Industrial Estate to the A31 while also handling substantial school traffic from both Poole and Parkstone Grammar Schools. This is not accounting for Broadstone First and Middle schools with traffic heading towards Poole, which without the Broadstone Way, would jam Derby's corner roundabout to a standstill.
      The road being laid on the track bed is more to do with the fact the residential areas were built around the railway, and as such any other route has become unavailable. The northern section of the Broadstone Way also serves as the direct link for any traffic from Creekmoor, Poole, Upton, Hamworthy and western Broadstone to access the A31 (necessary for all traffic heading east from the area) via Dunyeats Road without the need to use the A350, which is busy enough as it is. While I'd love to see this line re-open, it is but a pipe dream.

    • @ladylibertyuk9270
      @ladylibertyuk9270 Před 6 lety

      TheSoutherner Never say never. The government are looking to reopen closed railway routes and the S&D will provide access from the South West to the Midlands and beyond without the need to go via London and the local traffic problems can be resolved.
