The chap that refuses to sell his pigments to Anish Kapoor is Stuart Semple, of Culture Hustle. He recently had an injunction slapped on him by Tiffanys to stop him selling his lookalike Tiff Blue paint, so instead he (effectively) gave it away with orders for his white paint. Don't mess with that guy!

There was actually a repeating gag in the pink panther animation, where the panther would paint the wall pink, and the detective would paint it back to normal (usually they would go in a circle around the building, pillar or whatever they were painting at the time). Stuart Semple (Culture Hustle) also now doesn't sell to Daniel Smith as well as Anish Kapoor, and this is because the Daniel Smith paint company bought up the world's entire remaining supply of a gold pigment that used to be used in automotive paint, and now you can only get that type of gold from Daniel Smith watercolours. He's also got a beef with Tiffany's over their copyright of their trademark blue shade, and he replicated it and now isn't allowed to sell it. He's giving it away right now if you buy a certain other paint.

In the churchyard of Bow Church (the one actually in Bow, not the one with the cockney-defining bells), there's a statue of William Gladstone that has had the hands painted red for pretty much its whole existence. The protest dates back to 1888 when the 'matchstick girls' were striking at the local Bryant and May factory. The statue was commissioned by Bryant himself and its unveiling caused uproar locally. The last attempt to clean it was before the 2012 Olympics, but the red was reinstated within a day apparently.

    2. The American cougar/mountain lion/puma is in the genus _Puma._ In some areas of the southeast USA that animal is colloquially called a "panther" or *"painter".* So in those areas, a sculpture of a cougar painted pink could be called a "painted painter".

Where the 2 brothers who established the Adidas factory had a fight and one of the brothers started his own factory on the other side of the river calling his company Puma.
Employees of the two firms and their families avoided speaking to each other; they patronized separate bars, bakeries and barber shops. From people's habit of looking at each other's shoes to see whether they were affiliated with Adidas or Puma.

I do feel slightly sorry for Anish Kapoor. I don't care for his art, but that's subjective. The lab that makes VantaBlack is not an art studio, they don't make product for artists, they make high tech materials for scientific instruments. They make a tiny bit extra to go to art, enough for maybe one guy. Which guy? The guy known for working with light and odd materials? Seems like a good call, right? Then Kapoor gets treated like he's some jerk big wig who swooped in and bought up every bottle.

I hate to be That Guy. especially after my last comment, but I saw a meme (I think it was a Twitter thread but it mighta been Tumblr) claiming the Anish Kapoor story was misinfo. :( I haven't fact checked it, but from what I recall the main takeaway was that the company that originally made the blackest black for him literally only had the manufacturing capacity to make it available to one specific person, and they happened to choose him -- and then a white dude comes along, sees a person of color with access to a pigment that, from the start, the company was only going to be able to supply to one person anyway, and goes, "oh hell no" and does a r cism about it. And, like everyone else here, I fell for it.

Im tryin to figure out WHY Berlin of all places wud be the place a pink panther wud be painted over an existin cat statue...
Bcuz Pink Panther doesntve any particularly notable connections to Berlin or Germany as a whole; in fact, its from a movie about a French person... Which is about as not German as you can get and still be in Europe :p
Id expect this in either USA or France, but then again this isnt the first time ive heard of Germans havin an unusual high regard for a character from our shores. Donald Duck has a rather large cult followin in Germany, emphasis on cult; well or at least looks and feels a lot like such with how much they revere those works
