Sam Reich?! Adam Savage?! What in tarnation is happening
Just the internet keeping the natural equilibrium in the Bacon number...
holy guest list, batman!
He was in one episode I think. Maybe in part 3 of their survivor.
@@QemeH My Savage number is one, in that he QT'd me saying that it was 2 to a friend of mine who he'd replied to 😁
He's been here the whole time
Tom Scott and Adam Savage and Sam Reich is a crossover I wasn't expecting.
Actually, none of the three pairs you can form here were, for that matter.
I'd believe Tom and Sam before any of the other combinations, tbh 😂 Then again, Adam recently did a video with Matt Parker, so...
@@IceMetalPunk Adam's done 3 videos with Matt Parker (and a pair with his cameraman), actually. The first couple were done pre-pandemic.
Also, Simone Geitz was associated with Tested (Adam's y/t company) for a couple years, and has been on an episode of Lateral. So Adam and Tom have been indirectly associated for a good while now.
@@IceMetalPunk Adam has done a few videos with Matt Parker.
Adam and Ashley is the same orbit to some extent
@@Leafsdude_ even longer than that! Way back in 2016, Tom Scott took a several-day trip on an arctic icebreaker with Chris Hadfield (the astronaut) and several internet creators. Two of those people from the internet were Tested's Norm Chan and Joey Fameli.
Tom made a couple of CZcams series about it, one where he did his usual talking-to-the-camera-from-places pieces, and one where he talked to Matt Gray about the experience of the journey.
Getting a “good sound effect” from Sam is one of the highest honours known. More prestigious than an Oscar, some would say
inb4 Sam invited Tom into a Make Some Noise episode
I wanted to know how many points Tom was going to get for that sound effect
@@feedzuh I mean would anyone complain if that happened?
And yet he didn't even get one point
@@bishrhu577 A missile full of mail amount of points.
For a second there, I was wondering "when did Sam Reich show up in this video?", but then I realized he'd been there the whole time!
I wonder where he's from
@@Avendesorawhereever hes from must have a movie theater
"Good sound effect" means a lot from someone who has a game show solely about judging people's improv'd sound effects.
Goose.
Train.
Goose on a train.
Tom Scott is now the focal point of a mindmap connecting most of mainstream CZcams together in like 3 steps
In film it's 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon, on CZcams its 6 degrees of Tom Scott
He is NOW the focus? You're a bit late to the party, I feel
@@Rocklobster6285 It's been building for a while, but it's really been ramping up with Lateral.
Can’t wait for the next episode of Game Changer where the players can only communicate with each other by slingshotting messages to each other across the Dropout parking lot
No wait give me that
Who's your dream team I say uh. Ally, Izzy, and uhhhh Jess McKenna
@@woodfur00Mine would be Brennan Ally and Zac
Adam Savage and Tom Scott together at last? Lets gooooooooooooo!
People keep mentioning Tom reducing the Internet's Bacon Number. I think we should start calling it the Scott Number, at least on CZcams.
No kidding. I literally had to do a double take on that thumbnail to make sure I was seeing who I thought I was seeing. 😆
I saw the thumbnail and thought ‘that can’t be Sam Reich AND Adam Savage’ and it IS!
I’m so happy to see Zam Reich hanging out in the background.
omg yes!!!! he looks so dapper
he's been here... the whole time
Ah, Sam Reich. I expect lateral suddenly changed into a very different game
What do you mean, suddenly? He's been here the whole time.
Are you suggesting he's a Game Changer™?
Sam says: riff on this question for five minutes without getting any words from the answer right
@@LelouchVeeunderrated comment
Yep, I have been Pavlov’ed into expecting a “ding” when he said his questions
Adam Savage is rich enough and well known enough to only do stuff he want's to .... Tom Scott - you have made it ...
Tom's kinda at that point of his career too
well known, yes. but financially, he doesn't make TV money anymore, so not as rich as you would think. He's stated that while he's well off enough to retire, he's not overly rolling in $.
@@BlackCatBritt the weird thing though is, he said he bought all his sortimo boxes for instance "back when he was making TV money" and recently he got another sixty on a pallet so... It doesn't take a math genius to see how, with all the new tools and things he buys all the time, he earns a few chunks more than just "what he needs to retire".
@@BlackCatBrittTrue, my point is he is well off enough to not say yes to everything anymore ...
@@jakobvanklinken the most recent ones he bought were for content/ as supplies for the Tested YT channel and workshop though, meaning they were likely bought with the "company" $ and can be written off as a business expense, as can most the of the tools he buys for the workshop. So the cash for them is not coming directly out of his pocket change.
5:20 "Unfortunately never took off" is a great (possibly unintentional?) pun. Had a good chortle there!
it also never blew up
I'm surprised none of the guests picked up on that! Maybe they just wanted to hear the rest of what happened.
I’m incredibly disappointed nobody picked up on it.
1:59 Gary Brannan lives on in this show
The moment they started talking 'bout _vacuum tubes,_ i knew just what to expect.
still anxiously awaiting the next set of tech diff field trips :)
Just needs more goose on train.
That makes it sound like Gary died

I love that Adam has a dinosaur skull behind him and Sam has the Zam puppet behind him.
Even better, for me, is that Adam has the hotel carpet from The Shining on his couch!
"Vanguard of the Explored" is both an excellent turn of phrase and a perfect name for the documentary series about weird post offices.
For anyone working on the suggested "Cool post offices" documentary, Burning Man sets one up every year with volunteer postal workers and custom stamp cancelation. Also, it would also give you an excuse to go to Burning Man as a tax write-off, which may well be a first.
also for this documentary it feels oblivius that this should also include old history like ancient greek level.
as I bet 100% that any nation that some how manadge to set up a colony the first thing they set up was the postal service.
Idk, I feel like Burning Man gets discussed a lot in popular culture, I’m sure there’s been newscasters that have covered it on their employers’ dime
A post office at "burning man" is probably the opposite of cool, in multiple ways.
At the risk of tooting my own horn here…..I’m the OG Postman Of The Playa who kinda started the whole thing
considering the sort of libertarian tech bro who loves Burning Man, I bet they find a way to use it an an excuse to dodge taxes
When the Lateral team asked who we wanted to see on the show a few months ago, I said Sam Reich, so I'm over the moon to see him in an episode!
Monty Python Holy Grail.
Concorde gets hit by arrow with note attached.
"Message for you, Sir!"
Having Adam on this show is the biggest cheat code for everyone else. He just says stuff and Tom is like "Yup, thats correct"
"Places that still have an active pneumatic tube system" is among the top pieces of information I would have assumed Tom just knows off the top of his head. I can't explain why but it's just peak on brand for him.
Considering he did make a video about a café that uses it, it stands to reason he did research on it, which is certainly on brand for him, and I think that's why your brain subconsciously sees it as "on brand" in this particular instance. Mine just did a bit more consciously. 😉
The tube sound effect Tom did was literally perfect
2:00 I'm glad Tom's audition for Make Some Noise went well!

ON!
It was a "Balao"-class missile submarine, the USS Barbero, which fired a Regulus missile with the warhead removed and replaced by the containers for the mail. Calling it "rocket" mail is a tiny bit of a stretch since the regulus is a jet powered missile. Which is why the letters were all marked "missile mail" and not "Rocket mail."
Also 'Missile Mail' is alliteration and therefore better.
Also, a submarine would have to surface to launch a Regulus, so the mail didn't (immediately) originate underwater.
How on earth did they receive the missile? Was the missile programmed to halt after the expected distance? I'm imagining some kind of net at the destination, or a ramp to redirect it upwards.
I'm also curious how much postage would have been, as I can imagine military grade underwater missiles don't come cheap.
Rocket propelled homing pigeons.
Ballistic-Encapsulated Avian Carriers!
😁
They were working on that in WWII (or maybe it was chickens), IIRC.
@@princecharonYou might be thinking of the "pigeon bombs". The design of the bomb was essentially a small glider carrying an explosive charge and a little box with a pigeon in it. The bomb had a set of lenses that projected an image of its surroundings onto a small pivoting screen in the pigeon box. The pigeon had been pre-trained to peck at the image of the bomb's intended target, causing the screen to tilt, which acted as a control stick. (Alas, more practical alternatives won out in the end.)
"Wait, I'll just quickly shoot you a message" got a whole new meaning here...
omg, Ashley Hamer and Tom Scott doing a thing together!!!
I feel bad for her, she didn't get to say much, and everyone is geeking out about Adam and Sam.
With all due respect, while I've known the 3 guys I've never heard of her, who is she, what is she known for?
@@deamon6681yea we all feel bad for her. Probably good exposure though…
@@Jenthura TBF to her, it could also be that question wasn't much for her to on for work with. I've seen some other episodes of the podcast where a guest is less talkative during one question but talks more during others because they have a better foundation on what to ask.
The US must be the only country with a three star postmaster general.
Tom is the winner of the coveted golden ear for his high speed pressure tube mail delivery sound
Adam savage?? Sam Reich?? i never thought Tom would have such pull, this is awesome!
talking about express mail.
but good point on the ''landing'' did they just let the missile hit a location. or did they also attach a parachute so they could slowdown the last part of decent.
they might be no warhead or other explosive in the missile but that is still a hunk of metal with someone's post in it
They used a test version of the Regulus missile, which had landing gear and could land like a plane
that does make sense @@davidshi451
I listened to the podcast and when you introduced someone from Tested I got so excited that it might be Adam Savage. True delight having his mind working on these cool puzzle questions.
This week is such a legendary lineup
I knew what it was from the description, and it was one of the most hilariously insane delivery methods ever
Not sure where to attach the necessary stamps... Gonna cost quite a few thousand $$.
I remember watching myth busters growing up, and the significance it had in pushing me into the sciences. I remember back in 2017 watching citation needed for the first time and it engaging me such that I immediately looked into everything Tom had made. I remember following college humor back in the 2010s. Seeing this massive of a cross over is fantastic. I feel like I need to go look up Ashley too. Crazy to see all the big names that come on.
Nuts they managed to get Ashley Hamer on this one! Looking forward to the next few clips of these
You have no idea how excited I got when I listened to this episode on Friday and realized Adam and Sam were on it
Was @ sam reich there the whole time? ... asking for a friend
He is, but i don't know where he's from
@@advanceringnewholder Hey Sam, where are you from?
@@leo_warren well, i don't know. But i heard a rumor that he's from Cambridge, Massachusetts
Since the tube mail was mentioned, it's also still in use in the MHH (Medizinische Hochschule Hannover / Hannover Medical School). With nearly 60km, it's also a tad bit longer than the one in Prague - at least as far as I know!
Plus: The MHH itself is already an interesting spot. Loved to work there. 👍
The one in Prague, as far as I can ascertain, isn't so much notable for being the biggest as for being the only surviving city-wide system (city-wide at the point of building, that is) that was used by a number of institutions and not just one or two, and was in use the longest. (It was only definitively abandoned after the big floods of 2002.)
A rather quick read suggests to me that where New York tried to use it essentially to replace regular postal services and then overworked the system, Prague wisely focused on the speedy delivery aspect and used it mainly for telegrams / quick communications such as for government or newspapers. So, being set up along those lines, basically it only died out with the coming of the internet.
(ETA: Also, come to think of it - obviously such a system then makes much more sense in a city that is the seat of government.)
So I guess it makes sense that nowadays the ones that remain in use serve for quick delivery of smaller packets of physical things... basically what it has always been best at and what the internet can't handle. 😅
I knew this one! I'm full of useless trivia, including missile mail! ...shame I can never remember where I heard something, it makes curating the trivia for fact-checking quite difficult.
“It’s not about sending a letter; it’s about sending a message”
The people in this video are amazing and also omg Adam's office is so cool
I noticed the wallpaper from The Shining on the couch.
Wtf this is amazing. How are everyone I know in this show AND Tom, and youtube waits until now to recommend any of it. I’m have so much to watch.
As soon as I heard 1959, my mind went to Alaska or Hawaii. Hawaii being more likely.
You should be proud of that sound effect, Tom, that was perfect! I see Gary's folay magic is making an impact.
This is amazing! What a great topic.
Can I say how much I appreciate the color-coded closed captioning that includes sound effects? We need more CC like this across CZcams. Thanks @caption_plus for the hard work to make this accessible for everyone!
we did it boys. tom, adam and sam all at once
The first successful rocket mail delivery in the U.S. was on Feb. 23, 1936, flying between New York and New Jersey.
I was expecting this to be some sort of Morse code trickery where "letters" meant characters, and they were trying out some fancy telegram service. 3,000 characters (600 words) in 22 minutes is about the average speed of a highly experienced Morse coder.
Nothing has proven that Tom Scott is my exact internet niche more than this crossover.
Since you said it three times, I want to point out that it's not the United States Post Office Department, it's the United States Postal Service. It is an independent agency of the federal government, not an executive department.
It is not *Currently*, but at the time it was.
Please, release the whole video.
OMG!!! The Goon Show's "The Jet-Propelled Guided NAAFI" makes so much more sense now!!!
I was absolutely convinced that the trick was going to be that it was a single, 3000-letter long message sent by computer in some pre-DARPA pseudo-internet thing. The answer is still cool, but I like my idea more =\
That's a stacked cast right there!
What a lineup! Wow
Yep, I'm going to have to listen to the full podcast for this one!
Why is everyone surprised to see Sam Reich? He's been here the whole time!
I finally knew about one of these!!
This is amazing!
I have this podcast ready for listening, but the video is amazing!
sam reich and adam savage is a crazy (good) lineup for any show
tom scott on an IRL trivia-based um actually, PLEASE GOD
I would have resigned from that question right away because I knew the answer immediately.
hell of a crossover episode!!!!!!
This was the episode I've been waiting :D
Another rather cool post office is the one on the summit of Mt Fuji.
1:57 Tom for Noise Boys?
Edit: I love the Zam cameo in the backgroud!
This was a really great episode, made me insanely happy to here Mr Savages wonderful voice!
5:22 Rocket mail did really take off apparently, just not very many times.
Tom, Sam and Adam, I would’ve never thought
Well, it was a joke made in a recent episode but Seven Degrees of Kevin Bacon just got a hell of a lot easier with this one. Tom Scott and Dropout are now connected directly through Sam, and Adam Savage helps connect to basically _everyone_ in the movie industry.
For one week prior to Labor Day in the US, it’s actually possible to send mail to Back Rock City, NV to reach someone attending Burning Man
Talk about delivering Express!
Now I want to see Tom Scott and Adam Savage on Um Actually
When the question mentioned 1959 I immediately thought of the space race, so I was thinking of some rocket powered delivery system lmao
That was such a good vacuum tube plop sound, lol
Finally, all my interests colliding. Waiting for the day we see Tom Scott on Game Changer or with Savage!
If there's any of these shows we need the complete video of, it's this one.
Sam, you should visit the post office at the top of Mount Fuji, that's pretty cool too, and a GORGEOUS view.😉👍
Tom Scott is truly the king of collabs you never expected
I remembered having heard of this one, but you filled in a lot of details I hadn't heard (e.g., the submarine).
Love the Zam Reich cameo :)
100 miles in 22 minutes is pretty obviously a rocket
Adam Savage!! I've been waiting for him to appear on this show!!
Best line-up to date ❤
Adam! What a collab!
Poor Ashley barely got a word in 😅
I've watched a lot of Tom Scott's videos, but I never knew Sam's been here the whole time.
When is Tom Scott gonna be on game changer?!
It is wild knowing this one already and watching them puzzle it out.
Also not the only time rocket mail was tried in the US, Airforce had done some cross-crountry experiments as well.
god this is so good, I wished there was a way to see the whole episode on video form! :(
Ok, some food and drink based Lateral's with Greg Titian, Alton Brown and Glen from Glen and Friends coming right up!😅❤
wow big gets for the guests. congrats
Adam Savage!!!
OMG OMG wow that is amazing ànd wonderful!!!!
That must have thrilled the Cubans....
Damn. Star-studded cast for this one.
Incredible
It also reminds me of IP over Avian Carriers RFC 2549: a protocol of Internet connection using postal pigeons.
The post office are also the ones who moved the gold from the NY Reserve to Fort Knox when it opened
