- I love sitting on Hannah's lap. It's warm. It's comfortable. And it allows us to be close. Plus, if she sat on my lap, I'd be crushed. Still, we know it probably looks a bit weird to strangers. Also in this episode, we get a surprise gift from Disney, an airport employee mistakes Shane for a baby, and we attend a fancy theater performance.

Shane was born with a neuromuscular disease called Spinal Muscular Atrophy that requires him to use an electric wheelchair. He is the author of several award-winning books, the President of a nonprofit organization called Laughing At My Nightmare, and a renowned public speaker who has performed across the country at places such as Harvard University, The University of Florida, The University of Connecticut, Princeton University, and many more.
Hannah just graduated from Carleton College, where she studied Sociology and Anthropology. Her future aspirations include attending graduate school and owning a goat sanctuary. She films and edits the “Squirmy and Grubs” vlog.
Shane and Hannah have been dating for 3+ years and living together in Minneapolis for a year. On June 15th, 2019 they got engaged!!!! Their interabled relationship often confuses people, because much of society still cannot fathom people with disabilities being involved in loving, intimate relationships. Anyone who watches these episodes will quickly see their relationship is just as “normal” as any other. Sure, Hannah helps Shane use the bathroom and brush his teeth, but those activities do not detract from the emotional, intellectual, and physical connection they experience together.
Our videos keep getting demonetized for seemingly no reason. Maybe advertisers just don’t support men sitting on the laps of their fiancées? Either way, we have merch if you want to support us. I am a 37 years old and suffering with similar diseases (neuromuscular disease) like Shane. Tears came in my eyes when I see this couple. You are simply great and hats off to your true love. I know very well about problems of such a person and his family members. Hannah you are simply great. My mom takes my care like this. I am totally dependent on my Mom, Dad and elder brother for my day to day activities. I am so much fortunate for having such a nice family. They always keep supporting me. My parents gave me a good education and I become a Computer Engineer which is very difficult especially in country like India. Today I am working as a freelance developer.
Life is so beautiful and people like us knows it very well. Always be positive and think positive. God is great and he always keeps his blessings on good people.

Im autistic and I really struggle with knowing how to "act" around other people and I've always struggled with communication and what's appropriate with disabled people i guess because I was never shown. I understand that Shane is much smaller than men his age, but when you look at his face it’s obvious he’s not a child. I just don’t understand how people can miss that. He honestly doesn’t even look like a teenager to me. I see a mans face no matter what. This is so mind blowing me to.

To see the love you two have had given me hope in life. A young man who has dealt with depression and sexual abuse at a young age - 26 different suicide attempts... Seeing your videos have given me inspiration that even though we all have faults to our stars, we can do anything we want if we have love and compassion. I have a tattoo on my ear and once had a lady lick her thumb, then take her thumb and forefinger, grab my ear and try to rub it off while telling me I had DIRT on my ear 😕. These people are ignorant and unfortunately for Shane he looks very young. People are uneducated and seeing someone who looked very young in a wheelchair brought out this feeling of compassion for Shane (which by the way he hates) and she just reached out to love on him. Many of us are too demonstrative with our feelings. I was born and raised in Alabama in a Christian home. I thought is was fine to hug people we just met because that was how I was raised. In college I began to back off a little bit and after living in LA I never touched anyone again and when I came home everyone said that I had changed so much and they acted disappointed that the sweet huggy loving girl they knew was gone. They blamed it on making money and becoming class conscious but they were wrong. It only takes one person acting like you are behaving in an overt sexual manner simply by hugging them to make you stop forever.
What if no one had seen and spoken to that lady at the airport. She would not realize that she shouldn’t have done that. Maybe we should just start slapping everyone across the face who behaves in an ignorant uneducated manner. No, I guess that may be a little harsh since most of us have behaved from a position of ignorance at one time or another. I had to sit down in my rollater seat the other day at a store because I was exhausted and hurting. I had at least 6 people stop and ask everything from “are you ok”, to “can I reach something for you” to “do you need help”. These were all very sweet people who didn’t understand what they were seeing. Should they be punished in some way because they didn’t understand? I don’t think so. Because each person in their own way was concerned and wanted to help. The woman at the airport was wrong but I wonder if we need to educate the compassion out of people just because it’s “inappropriate behavior”.

@@mindyvaughn8217 There are ways to offer people hugs without forcing them on people. You can open your arms and offer a hug but wait to see if they reach back to you before you hug them, for example. Or even just ask out loud 'hey, are you a hugger or a handshaker?' It takes practice like anything else but these are great skills to have.

I don't get why people think Shane is a baby? He's small, but his face looks like the grown man he is. I know ppl have good intentions. .but REALLY LADY?? I don't ever touch strangers period, let alone someone in a wheelchair. U don't know if u could get them sick, hurt them, and most importantly, INSULT THEM. U guys are used to it, BUT U SHOULDN'T HAVE TO "get used to it". With all ur speaking engagements and books, blogs, videos, hopefully ppl will get more educated. This kind of ignorance is truly embarrassing, and I'm proud of that employee, and I hope grope lady felt as weird as Shane and Hannah did!!!

@Giraffe Juice yes. They do it anatmocially the same way any couple would but things are a bit different, like she would be on top always since he cant hold himself up like that. Not really something you ask but theyve discussed it in a video before because they understood it's out of curiosity and miseducation. In the future it's not appropriate to ask since you can find those sort of things out online if it's really something you need to now, but I hope now you understand it really is like how everyone does it. If they were both disabled there would be alot more to go into it. Theres a doc on here about a couple that's disabled and it shows how they have to have other people to help them get into position since they cant move themselves, but they can still do tiny movements and make love once in those positions. It's interesting and sad to think how for some sex isnt necessary possible because people dont believe disabled couples having sex so there arent as many organizations out there to help these folk. But the doc had impact, it was on a couple in the UK so hopefully more people will realize it isnt so taboo and that it's a very real thing for people with disabilities and they should have access to help to enjoy what so many of us do without having to think about.
