- To be a Ukrainian resistance fighter in occupied territory, there are fundamental rules you must live - and sometimes die - by.
The most important of these is to go unnoticed. You need to blend into the crowd. Dress inconspicuously; prepare an alibi; be punctual - if someone is two minutes late to meet you, assume they’ve been captured.
Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, there have been occasional reports of car bombings in occupied areas, of honey traps and poisonings, but the full size, scope and level of support for the country’s underground movement has never been revealed to those outside an inner sanctum of key officials. Until now.
In this episode of Defence in Depth, Dominic Nicholls, The Telegraph’s associate editor, discusses a new report by Dr Jade McGlynn, Senior Associate at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies, to cast a light on the patriotic partisan movement comprising many tens of thousands of Ukrainians.
From distributing yellow ribbons to assassinating Russian secret police, this week’s Defence in Depth focuses on those individuals risking their lives to carry out acts of resistance and defy enemy rule in occupied Ukraine.

Partisans take the most personal risk, in taking actions that usually have little efficacy, with no chance of recognition for those actions. Nonetheless the 20th and 21st centuries have proven the collective power of a community united in its opposition to occupation is extremely hard to contain. Even when a nations army is swept from the field with ease by the invader, the occupation is often too much for the invaders to maintain.

In the past conquering armies would wipe out the most of the population and sell the rest into slavery to avoid things like this from happening that is why Genghis Khan, Timur, Alexander the Great or Julius Caesar were so successful in their conquests because unlike Putin they were not weak.

What did he say about himself? It's true that there are no reports this detailed in anglophone media about Ukrainian resistance. Besides Dom (or Telegraph) references and gives credit to McGlin and his investigation, even if generally it's nothing new to Ukrainians and those in touch with them.

Read history about the Finland's land areas annexed by Russia. Fast forward from WW2 to today and see that border average salary is 1/6 on the Russian side compared to Finland. They moved Russians from other parts of Russia into these areas so that historical ties would be cut. This is their old doctrine going back to 1800s. They really have not moved forward.

I'm not a subscriber here. Is "Defense in Depth" the name of a series here or something like that? Defense in Depth is the name of a specific military strategy and what the Ukrainians (or Russians for that matter) are doing is definitely not that, so the video title is quite confusing.

Just a moral code of conduct, i think more like a distinct style and self-discipline. Both to not attract attention, give away the emotional state or attitude in communications and still distinguish themselves from rashist collaborators. I think it's also a mental resilience thing, as excessive swearing (easy to give in under atrocious occupation conditions) is mentally draining and negative. That's why even many Ukrainian soldiers, when asked what they think of or want to say to invaders, just reply - i have nothing to say.

Ukraine never owned the nukes, let alone could they have maintained them. Ukraine was too corrupt and lacked the ability to safely posses any Russian nukes.
Crimea has a lot of cold war era tunnel systems, but they also has a lot of ancient catacombs. Ukrainians have waged guerilla war from them in the past. Just before WW2 there was a famous group of Ukrainian partisans that fought the russian occupiers from the catacombs. After Germany conquered Crimea, the partisans fought them. They let a group of russian special forces also use the catacombs. Both groups hunted germans and at some point, as people started going crazy, they hunted each other. I believe it happened in Odesa. There were a couple dozen Ukrainian partisans and a couple dozen russians. Only 1 man survived, the Ukrainian leader.
It's rare to discover a book that, more widely read, would definitely push the world into a better direction.
