There are so many things wrong with SDC's process, but to clarify the latest dental research advises against taking X-rays for mild to moderate cases as the benefits outweigh the risks. The problem with SDC is mainly because they treat people that should not have been treated in the first place. The dude who's teeth broke for example had underlying dental issues for sure; aligners can't do that themselves.

I only help explain a procedure and cannot diagnose anything with my only major potential medical decision being to not put a numbing Novocain injection vile with a chemical in it that puts anyone with heart issues at huge risks on the tray. That’s it. No dental assistant should be doing this and the biggest component of my job is to be an advocate for my patients to help them make informed decisions around their health but this company and it’s sales assistants are abusing this relationship for personal monetary gain.
We also shouldn’t be in any office seeing patients without scrubs. Any mouths getting open? Scrubs, gloves, masks, glasses/face shields otherwise I could get sick, get my patient sick, spread diseases to other patients, spread diseases to my family, etc. if I were to dress myself like the smile direct club employees.

I think the point is to spend $2,000+ on a treatment plan this isn’t going to solve your problems or may even cause harm and the need for subsequent dental work, is worse than waiting and spending the money when you can. Most orthodontists have interest free payment plans as well.

Just a heads up, I had Invisalign for several years and now my teeth are straight and my smile has been widened and looks great. However, I originally also wanted to get just the top teeth done because my bottom teeth were straight. Over a year into the treatment I began to realize that my teeth were not aligning well and it was difficult to chew. I ended up paying the additional cost to do the bottom teeth as well. My teeth now align with eachother well and I can chew and comfortably keep my mouth in a closed, resting position. I highly recommend that you get more information before signing an orthodontic contract for a treatment that includes only the top teeth. I didn't think of the alignment issue until it came up, and it was a large enough issue that I ended up spending the extra $2200 for the bottom teeth.

I used Smile Direct, and while my teeth weren't perfect after, they were a hell of a lot better after. I wasn't expecting perfection for the price, but it did accomplish my goal of getting my teeth uncrowded enough to floss them and make them look much nicer. I don't have any bite issues either. However, this took 7-8 visits to the Smile Shop and 5 new projections and aligner sets to accomplish an almost perfect smile. I also managed to get most of my money back due to all the issues, so that was nice. The best thing about Smile Direct is that it has provided some desperately needed competition and forced other providers to drop their costs into the realm of affordability for more people. Before Smile Direct came here, it was an average of at least $10k for Invisalign (I went to about 10 different Orthodontists looking to correct my crowding), but I've noticed it is now about $5k. So that's been a great thing for Canada!

I recently finished ny invisalign treatment of in total 21 aligners (only lower teeth)
My entire treatment was through an orthodontist and I had regular checkups.
I think, that one of the differences between invisalign and other cheeper options is, that the glue spots with invisalign act as "brackets" (is that the right english word?) from traditional braces.
The glue spots where changed a few times throughout the months to "pull" the teeth the right way.
Those ligner in the video are pushing the teeth only by changing the shape of the plastic ligner. They can't for example pull a tooth further out.
Moreover, my invisalign treatment came with extensive aftercare.
I got a threat behind my theeth to keep them in place and I just went in to make a mould to get another "ligner" to use a couple of nights per month. (This is only because I had braces as a child but with a bad dentist so my teeth moved again. Therefore my new orthodontist want to be 10000% sure that nothing can move. Or if the threat gets loose, I have something to keep the teeth in place until I get an appointment)

As Specialist Orthodontist, I recommend before orthodontic treatment, you look for these potential issues (your orthodontist will check these by taking X-rays and probing your teeth one by one!! at your first few initial appointments)
1-Any cavity, and restore them, they tend to get worse during treatment (you may need RCT and crown to save the tooth, extra cost!!) as you change the oral environment with fitting braces (or aligners), you need extra care and specific oral hygiene instructions
2-Any RCT tooth, (root canal treatment) they may get flareup, you end up having severe pain and infection, they may need re-treatment (RCT again), you may in the worst-case scenario have to remove them, leaving you with an extra cost of placing implant/bridge to replace the tooth
3-Any gingival recession or thin alveolar bone covering the roots of the teeth [this needs checking the teeth one by one and in some cases, CBCT(scan)], this can lead to more gingival recession, hypersensitivity and treatment for gingival recession is very costly, you need a gum graft
4-Any crown or existing tooth filling, the margins of the crown usually change as we move teeth and may leave you with unpleasant crown margins, some restorations may fail during brace treatment, all these things need prior check-up and care during treatment, which is a part of orthodontist job treating you

A F YES! This needs to be the top comment. I’m glad the dentist that returned the call at the end, suggested the patient see their dentist. Not as scummy as I imagined, but sad that less than 1% probably get to talk to a real dentist. This is a horrible option. There is a reason why it’s cheaper. And it’s not worth it! I’ve had a few patients put their children in this because they didn’t want to do extractions. I pleaded with them not to.... but they don’t care bc theyre saving money up front. But in the long run they will regret it

I'm not a dentist or an orthodontist, but I knew what I needed done would be impossible by using a treatment like this. I went through years of braces and also jaw surgery. It wasn't easy, or cheap, but it was worth it.

OH MY GOD. I did a scan at one of their branches. everything was going well, until I told them that I wouldn't want to pay on the spot and that I would like to think about it. She said that I could do a down payment and they'll charge me later on. I said no and IMMEDIATELY, she got so passive aggressive, rude and disinterested.
As she continued, she didn't smile even half as much as she did in the first 15 minutes of the meeting. She then creepily smiled and asked "I'm sorry, did you feel attacked?" I was so taken aback by this. My whole visit was also recorded (I gave them consent to do so.) She then asked if I could at least give them a 5 stars review and mention her name so she gets free pizza (the nerve) and I actually did.

That's not true. They are actually dental assistants. However, SDC has made their role into more of a sales role. I've done a scan and they don't even stick a mirror in there to check for cavities. No basic double check. It's questionnaire, scan and gift bag and ur out.

It's not for everybody. I, thankfully, had very minor correction needed. I didn't have any crowding or anything major, my bite was just fine and overall i had great alignment, i just needed to fix the spacing on my front top teeth, and it worked great for that in my own personal experience. I had no issues and am still wearing my retainers 1 year later and am fine. But it's not for everyone, only minor treatment cases. Anything else you want to just go to the doctor and look into actual braces.

    • @mr_hara

When the treatment is done for how long do you have to wear those retainers?
I just start my SDC treatment few days ago and honestly i can't see any changes, i have to fix the spacing on my top teeth only, no crowding or anything like that.
      Now i'm really concerned....
