I loved this video, Charles! I also use SubmitHub to promote my singles, and I have found that more or less I agree with you in the way that it's not really worth it. My overall results are 208 submissions and 16 approvals. So an 8% approval rate.
I also get SUPER mixed and contradicting feedback. And it's always either the production or vocals. Some will basically say "i love the production but your singing sucks" and some say "your production is ass but your singing is the best we ever heard."
I also feel like a lot of the issue is that the quality of curators isn't great. Like the example you used in this video, the playlist you got accepted to literally had 18 followers. Other playlisters or bloggers with similar stats will be super condescending and start off the feedback like "This was a nice attempt" or "I see what you're trying to do..." and it's just AGGRIVATING!
This video was really helpful because I really love your music, and it makes me feel better about myself knowing that even YOU have trouble on there😂
One question I have after watching: why did you want to wait until the song was already released to submit it to people? I have submitted my song to outlets before its release and that seemed to give me an advantage.
Again thanks so much for posting this and can't wait for more content!

Hi there, I appreciate your effort in reviewing this for us. 2 questions, you said you don't need the song to be currently released to submit it, but I saw in the vid that you waited until the song was live? Also, if I submit before it's released, how do they then get the song on the playlist? I'm guessing they get a pre-save link and HOPEFULLY remember to add the song when it's released? This seems risky to me haha

  • @theexuberantmortalbeast6213

I just subscribed because you went through the entire process including the results. You spent $27.00 to teach us a lesson. I commend that. I have a new EP I’m compiling places to submit. And this here was an important video for an independent artist. Your a very humble person I can tell. But don’t doubt the value of what you have produced. You just saved me time and money. So I commend you Sir and give the video 5 out of 5 stars. ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🙌🏾
    Awsome work.

To make it successful, I think you have to listen to the music they put on their playlists. If it doesn't fit lets say the first 5 and maybe a random one you choose, then forget it. Otherwise its a real waste of money as the playlisters choose the smallest things to reject your song.

I heard your song, it is really good, totally enjoyed. What I find interesting is how they treat their playlists almos like an A&R person. I have a personal Spotify playlist I created to listen to my favorite covers and I never think too much when adding songs, I just like a cover and add it to my playlist. I personally liked the way you produced the song, in fact I like the minimalistic aspect of the chorus in contrast to the norm, but I can see a common element in the feedback you got, which has to do with the climax they were expecting and that could probably serve you for future projects. Very interesting video and informative, thank you.

It would be better if you looked at each curator, and made sure that their biggest playlist fits your genre. Some of them have a lot of likes on a playlist but it's filled with label artists only or it's not your genre. Also, if they do have a popular playlist, you have to make sure it's organic and not populated by a stream farm.

I've checked out your music. It's good- well produced, well written, well performed. These kinds of services, and actually, just putting music 'out there' is kind of saying 'judge me, world!'. Music is completely subjective. Songwriters can be pretty sensitive cats and having those kinds of responses, I would think, would be detrimental to the writer. On the other hand, I've seen people fall all over themselves about a track that sounds like their keyboard was left on 'demo' mode and it gets a million streams. It's too bad that the music 'business' is this way now- but the good thing is that pretty much anyone can put stuff out these days. Some will like it. Others will not.

Hey really great video Charles! I am looking forward to using Submit hub for my first release and your video did give good perspective on it not just how to information. Thanks!
Although I was curious about something which might seem silly. Since you uploaded an mp3 on Submithub instead of a link, don't you have to send the actual Spotify track link to the curators when the song is released, so they can add it to their playlists?

My artist had three songs to reach the Submithub charts, they all hit #1 in the R&B genre. However the last song, for some reason got placed on a shady looking playlist. While I didn’t submit to that playlist, however I believe one of the curators was placing people on this playlist, with hopes of asking them for payment to stay on the playlist. Also, Ari Hersted stated that Spotify does not really like using SubmitHub for playlist placement.

thx for tut. I listened your song. Like that piano and voice is good too. But definately needs somekind of climax. Drums could smack more and transitions are too mellow. I can hear 80´ vibes. Im couraging to make more variety to music and make more differences to different parts of song. Vocals are def best part of this song but they are still not on this decade. That was just my opinion. I like your Don´t start now.

I have recently subscribed to Submithub. 1/ I have dyslexia and it’s not user friendly 2/ It is hard to find curators that match my music production even with my gospel songs and jazz tracks.

Hi Charles, first of all I would like to say thank you for this review and for your transparency. I checked some of your songs and I really liked them. I see actually no reason why they should not be on a playlist, especially because they sound really radio friendly.
I'm a member of a music producer duo and we were also using Submithub several times, and our result was quite the same. So I am kind of "happy" that not only we had this frustrating experience. The reasons for not placing our tracks were almost the same as for you: Song does not fit to my style, too commercial, sound design did not catch me blabla. Even the famous "mixing is not good enough" is mentioned from time to time, although all our tracks are mixed and mastered by a pro in the studio... Also, it is kind of funny that the statements of the curators sometimes contradict each other completely.
Interesting was also the part when your song was submitted to this "mini" playlist. We had this experience also several times, when the guy says: “I really like your track, and although it doesn’t fit my main playlist, I have this new playlist with 7 followers that I’ll add you to”. I think there is some reason for this: When you go into the curators main playlist, you see lots of followers, but the tracks/songs are mostly from mainstream artists (who clearly didn't get on the list by way of SubmitHub). By putting you on a lesser playlist, which will never get any traffic, the curator's score for amount of shares will still go up, making it seem like they share to big playlists...
    important

Submithub irks me at time. I upload rnb songs or hiphop songs and people say they are too repetitive. Automatically I know they don't understand the hiphop and rnb genres so why are they judging it. Plus since when aren't songs repetitive. It's a song not an essay. It's supposed to be rememberable

@@CharlesCleyn yes, I knew that website because I sent a song to someone that had a playlist, then he told me he only review music trought that website, I bought 5$ just to send that guy the track , asked 2 $
he said "the track is cool, the production is nice but is not my personal taste"
after that I sent several tracks to the other "curators" using "standard credits" and then they didnt even answer anything, "I guess that is because it was using the standard credits"
anyway I noticed many of those curators only share your song if you "give them permision to monetice"
so basically, this is how seem ot be it works:
      1) you compose a song
      2) you record the song
      3) you copyright the song
      4) you pay for the distribution of the song
last step: you want to share your song
and then "to even get listened you have to pay them"
then they also demand you allow them to monetice your work or they wont share it.
bunch of crows, they didnt participate in any step of the work and they didnt pay anything yet they want to make money with your work, is easiest just to pay for advertising , less frustrating
