I've now worked for some weeks on the "other side" of the Services (as a curator). And for Playlistpush, I can say, that THEY just send you tracks for review. I was first a bit confused, because the first 2 out of 3 tracks didn't match the playlists genre(s) at all. As a curator you cannot tell Playlistpush what genres you accept, they say that they detect this automatically by the tracks within your playlist. This is probably why you probably got so many "doesn't fit" "were looking for some more electronic" reviews. For Submithub, you've much more control over the situation on both sides. The artist can say, what he thinks his tracks genre is... and filter the curator list, who tell what type of music they usually accept. Also, at the moment you get insight in how many Streams you can expect, IF they accept your track for a certain playlist. You also get kind of an acceptance rate. This rate is not to be taken too serious - as a curator you get really a lot of crap submissions. Songs that don't fit the genre, because the artist just changed the genre of the track to e.g. "Synthwave" even though it's "Trap Beat" (very different) and try to find any lazy curators that just hits the "accept" button (which is not allowed by the way). Or the production quality is just bad. Hence, don't get discouraged by the low percentage too much - for a solidly produced track, your chances are probably 3 times higher. As said, keep an eye on the expected streams per track per month stats, which tells you how active the listeners in a playlist really are (you can expect 10-20% of the follower count to be active listeners per month for an active playlist, having real followers). Also look for how long stays in the playlist on average. You know what a stream generates in money. Also you might get new followers (currently ~2,5% of the listeners are following me) and that means chances are good, they would also listen to my other tracks and get suggested my new releases. Also ~5-10% of people seem to "save" my tracks, when heard on a playlist they really like, giving me some long-term benefit from the listing. So, you probably receive about the same number of streams additionally distributed over the next year, after the usual 1 month they keep your track in the list. So if their stats say, that they generate about 150-250 monthly listeners (for each track), and keep your track in for a month, you can probably expect about 200 * 2 = 400 Streams generated within 1 year. Now, you can also have a look at their stats for the playlist: Percentage of Premium-Listeners and the countries that most of their followers come from. If it's from high quality regions you can probably expect about 2,50 USD per 1000 Streams, subtract maybe the share of your Distributor (mostly like 15%). So you get something like 2,50 USD * 400 / 1000 * (100 - 15) / 100 = 0,85 USD. Ok, then ... If a curator accepts like 20% of the tracks he gets for a genre (see his stats), and assuming your track is high quality (hence about factor 3 higher acceptance probability) you should have a real chance of like 60%, which means 0,85 USD * 60% = 0,51 USD estimated earnings from the submission on average over a year. A credit at Submithub costs 0,80 USD if you buy 100 at once. And a curator can cost 1, 2, or 3 credits per review. So the curator might cost like 0,80 USD with a chance to earn like 0,51 USD (if the curator is high quality). Still not profitable.. But, this is without having accounted for the possible peak in listeners causing your track being featured in Spotify's algorithmic playlist. Since you probably need like a 10k short-term listener spike, and you get like 60% chance to get 200 short-term listeners, this would be 120 listeners on average. Hence, you'd need like 85 times that much to spike the algorithm... while Submithub probably doesn't have enough high quality curators for your genre to supply those, this would give you a massive push in Streams for quite a while (assumed your track is high quality). I guess like additional 100% of the Streams during the peak and 10-20% of that after the peak slowly dropping over the year - not seen the long-term stats for this (numbers are taken from that I remember from tutorials which advertised a track using Facebook). If this would work out, one might get into a profitable range - at least its more return on investment than like 300-400 Streams for 411 USD. Maybe, it could be combined with Facebook Ads and shout-outs on social media to get it spiked. I'm not "affiliated" with Submithub, PlaylistPush (just a curator there)... nor have I tested out submitting to curators, yet. Was too frightened of all the refusal messages, which might actually discourage a lot. But, I see my own stats and for my playlist ... what music I get suggested... and how valid those numbers are and how to work with them. Having seen the curator side now, I got a bit more courage and faith now to try to submit my own tracks and hope that helps anyone who is trying to push their music out. Also you can "earn" premium credits at Submithub by reviewing songs in their Hot-or-Not-Voting (essentially peer reviewing of tracks). This however takes a while... so if you have lots of time, but no money to spend... this might be also an option. This also might help to know if a track is ready for submission and to estimate your chances...
Naw, I think is best this way, imagine anyone being able to get in just because the door is wide open, we’d probably start to hate music.

damn thats a bad result for over 400$. Im glad you did this video, i bet it saved alot of money for some people who wanted to use the service (who have similar quality music or worse than yours for example). The 400$ would for sure would have been better invested in any ads
This is so sad. Streaming services need to give indie artists a more prominent place on their platforms. There's really no way around it. It's become harder than ever to break through, even though it appears to be the other way around.
It's so easy to make music and publish today and like you say that makes it really difficult for artists to get discovered
@@CharlesCleyn Yeah, I think the problem lies within the streaming era concept of promoting music directly at the audience. People generally suck at identifying new and interesting. music. Back in da day there were these filters in the form of radio producers, press and dj:s who You could pitch Your music to. That was also hard, but at least there was a filter. If You got through You and only a few others were exposed for a brief moment. That dynamic is gone. You need to stand out on a massive digital field where everyone's a dj but no-one is dancing.Sure there are dj's and radio stations today as well, but they have adpated the role of serving as reflections of online trends rather than being trendsetters.

This is exactly why labels are still needed today. They can make $400 go a lot farther than a measly 300 new streams
they also take a cut though..you could likely get better results with Facebook ads
Yeah, for 400 USD you probably can get some reasonable results with Facebook Ads.
Thank you so much Charles for doing this for us. I am using submithub and was about to use playlist push, but after seeing your results that is a no no for me. Especially after watching the feedback you got, omg... it really seems that most playlist curators do not know what they are talking about yet they play an important part of us indie composers/songwriters journey. For one of my tracks for example I had feedback of it being overproduced, too simple, too symphonic (even though there isn't any orchestral instruments), too rock and too pop. And I very carefully check the playlists I am submitting to see if there are any other songs similar to mine. An to top it all on those platforms nothing will happen to the curators even if we rate them low, there will be just a notification about their rate and nothing else, when in reality they should not be allowed to be listed as curators.
You would think this digital age would mean more open-minded people but clearly there are fucktards in these positions of power smh.
To earn some reasonable money per hour there, you've to actually spend a very short time per track. You get 0,50 USD per credit you pay. So you've like 2 minutes to listen and write your review if you wanna earn like 12-15 USD before income tax. Sometimes you get lot's of crap... and also it might happen, that the "autoplay" feature just continues to plays the next track, while you write your review... this might also cause some reviewers to write about the wrong track. Some curators also might have "given up" and just ... accept a track if its good, or writing garbage return messages ... I don't want to excuse for them. Because there's no excuse for that! ... just give you a bit of insight what's happening on the other side. The best is probably to thoroughly check the curators stats before you submit. Also you can check the recent feedback they gave (have a look at the "..."-options menu), so you can see if it makes sense. You can however not see what tracks they commented on. I'd then try out some curators and decide if I'm going to submit to them again or not. If you've found some good curators, you'll quickly know what they like and what criteria they look for in detail. Hence, you can estimate in advance if it makes sense letting that curator review a certain track or not. That means your chances also increase, because the curator knows that your submissions are a good fit with much higher probability. Also, the curator sees next to the submission how many track you submitted to them in the past and how many they accepted. Hope this helps to get more efficient there...
The money is samples, promoting other artist, and teaching music.
i use a company called You Grow for my record label. They have different packages that "gaurantee" "X" amount of plays on which ever package you chose, and from my experience i always get WAYYY over that amount. Heres what people do have to realize about these playlist submitters, theyll push your song but if your song isnt good (not saying your music isnt good) then no ones going to want it on their playlist. People want music they actually like. Not slip them a benjamin under the table and call it a day or the playlist could lose followers. So while i do notice some people giving alot of these places bad reviews and not seeing returns on their investments, at the end of the day it always comes down to good music. As an artist you always have to take a step back and realize is your head up in the clouds? Or back down to earth realizing the music needs some work

@@Darwinedm yea this comments a couple months old. As we audited our plays in the last few months, something wasnt adding up with them and we discontinued our relationship with them. We noticed every single release in the last 3 months was ranking the same top 5 cities......in the same exact order too. So we emailed them, called them out, tried telling us some bullshit none of us were believing and told them were done with them. Even tried asking for our money back on all the times we used them for promo since they lied about their plays being "organic" and "real" which they clearly werent. We went back and forth for a while until i said keep the money but im not sending anyone your way and im telling people i know who use you to stop using you. done deal with them

See that's why it makes me wanna quit music altogether because the industry and it's fuckin rules and expectations and don't let me talk about these dam Playlisters why is it so dam hard to get on Playlist why you gotta have good production why can't you just enjoy the song and give indie artists a chance good production don't mean shit they need to stop expecting us to sound like these sign artists and let us be original and different we gotta pay to get or Playlist or pitch or self good and these sign artists ain't gotta do nothing but get on shit for free now make it make sense I got the mind set now fuck a Playlist if I get on one I do if don't that's fine because I love music and I love writing it I may not ever get a million streams and so what it's not about that it's about the love and passion for it.

I agree partially with this. Your song is your creation. Production is the first step in that. It is much better to produce a full quality song than try to make an album in the bedroom with $300 worth of studio gear.
I'm not saying bedroom studios can't sound good. They certainly can when the person doing production understands audio engineering and how to get the most out of their equipment. What you find way too often these days is that everyone with a computer and software is mass producing poor sounding music.
If you truely believe in a song create it to the best budget you can. Quality over quantity.
That being said though I can't say poor production is really the issue with the playlists.

Great video Mate. I tried Playlist Push. These guys send my songs to some playlists without even properly checking if its a match. Most of them gave very positive reviews but said the song does not fit in their playlist!! My song got added to 10 of the 40 playlist submissions. Even worse is, I cant see to which playlists they submitted it. All I want see is the curators comments so if I want to send it to more playlists by buying another top up package, I cant. I have to depend on the playlist push team. I have lost confidence it submitting my next song to them. I just dont like the option of choosing artists similar to me!! I think submit hub could be better because u can see the playlist name, the curator, check the playlist out and see if your song fits before submitting it. I haven't tried but am I not correct?

Thanks Charles for a very informative video! For personal reasons with my original songs I can't receive royalties. Also, if they are monetized does it mean I receive money too. If so, I can't do that either. I just want my songs to be for free to see if listeners like them, test the waters so to speak. Also, do they take my cover songs and post them for free, or is there copyright complications with cover songs? Also the feedback you read are all only one sentence or less and very superficial. Is that the reality even if you pay the higher fee, like a Spotify curator charges $10 for the premium treatment, would those critques be more substanial, more than just one sentence? Thanks again for your video as no way can I even afford $400, I'm more at the $100 level...
The stream counts are too low therefor they should be axed from submithub .. but no got to keep the money racket going and you get a review for the money so its not a scam but is it?

There is no way such thing as a real service which will push your music to authentic audiences. You have to make connections with real people who have real playlists, and spread organically through actual human communication.

$411 for that amount of streams is rough. PlaylistPush doesn't look much different from Groover or SubmitHub, just 10x the price so I might avoid them for now. My experience on SubmitHub is fortunately much better than in the video. Out of 130 recipients, 52 approved, over 35 campaigns.

Is SubmitHub and Playlist Push used after or before your official release of your single?
I think after because you do need to provide a Spotify link but I've never tried pitching it before release.
I've got submissions as a curator on Submithub that were 13 days before the release. I have however not accepted those. It didn't meet the quality standard, but the artist got some nice feedback which he was very happy with. Anyways, there was no Spotify-Link in the submission details, I could just the uploaded MP3 for review. I guess, the artist will be able to add the link to the submission on/after the release date.
