      And, if you go a step further with this way of thinking when the First Doctor turns up on Three's monitor to lecture the both of them, that's the Doctor's child-like self telling them both to stop fighting - probably why the Doctor, in general, is so kind to children because he understands their naive wisdom in a way

    • @samueldixon9028
      @samueldixon9028 Před rokem +98

      There was some tension between them in real life. Troughton had a pretty loose, improvisational approach - in every take he would do his lines slightly differently, ad-lib, just generally try out a lot of stuff and see what worked. Pertwee was incredibly precise - he liked to know exactly what he was going to say, but also what everyone else was going to say. When they did these multi-Doctor stories, any scenes that they had together they would drive each other nuts because their working styles clashed so much.

      Apparently, some of that tension is very real. Troughton was the kind of actor who loved and thrived off improvisation. He joked around a lot while working. Conversely, Pertwee took things very seriously. Acting was his job and he was focused on getting things done and doing them right (ie according to the script). Both are valid approaches but that caused some frustration for Pertwee and I suspect Troughton just loved every minute of it.

    Jon Pertwee was the doyen of the Doctors for me, untouchable. But Troughton is the first one I can remember watching as a child and this clip reminds us of his brilliance. He somewhat stole the show whenever his Doctor returned, yet he was popular with the other Doctor Who actors. Tom Baker, an admirer, watched this adventure when getting to grips with taking over the role as the fourth version. He pinched the idea of jelly babies from Troughton, who used them in The Three Doctors (but not this clip). Colin Baker, the sixth Doctor, admitted that Patrick's mercurial version was his favourite. Though he breathes his own style into the part, Doctor no. 7, Sylvester McCoy, is very much a tribute to Troughton's impish second Doctor and that echo resurfaces again with Matt Smith's popular eleventh incarnation - floppy hair, bow tie and all. So the influence of Patrick Troughton's second Doctor has been immense and he had the daunting task of taking over and completely re-inventing a TV lead role from a much loved predecessor, for the first time. The success of the regeneration concept rested on Patrick's shoulders and he pulled it off magnificently.

      There would be no Doctor Who beyond the fourth season if it weren't for Patrick Troughton. Deciding upon a radically different actor in both appearance and temperment was an enormous risk and it's doubtful anyone else could have pulled it off, even if they had happened upon Jon Pertwee at that time.

      In my youth Tom Baker was my favorite, because I saw a lot of his stories, and he was the favorite of the friend who introduced me to the show. But when I got into my 20s, and started renting Who DVDs via Netflix, and actually started seeing more of the show for myself, including all of the 3rd Doctor, he quickly and easily became my ACTUAL favorite. I love Tom, he has some great stories, but to me Pertwee's era was near-perfection. It was the strongest and most consisted era of the show, thanks to Terence Dicks and Barry Letts, and IMO even the weakest stories of his tenure are still rather good. No stinkers in the lot. And his best are some of the very best the show has ever had.
      It was a similar deal when I got to start watching more 2nd Doctor stories, thanks (sadly) to the animation of missing episodes. He has easily become my #2 Doctor, as while he has some strong stories as well, I just really love his persona of the Doctor. Tom would be my #3, and grumpy, wonderful old Hartnell would be my #4.
      But you're right, without Troughton's brilliant performance, Doctor Who would have died on the vine, meaning no Pertwee, no Baker. Just as without Pertwee's brilliance, the show wouldn't have soared to the greater heights it achieved in the 70s, he helped grow the much bigger audience that Tom inherited and enjoyed. Both highly integral actors to the show's history and success.

    You know it just occurred to me. The Doctor could be his OWN companion. Now that would make an interesting season. Let's say one doctor was trapped for a season, out of sync from his own time frame, and you end up with two Doctors going on adventures together, trying to make the TARDIS whole again, as this has caused her to split into two entities. One flying off into the fabric of space and time while the doctors search for her in a more erratic incomplete TARDIS and less able to control than ever.
    But the big question is, who would be the companion and who would be the Doctor? Thus, the title, Doctor Who. I don't know how that would work, but it would be interesting and weird. At times, one could rescue the other from peril. Other story lines would include the dilemma of having two doctors in the same time line and the effects it would have on the time stream.

But as you pointed out, without the connection of the Doctor, Who indeed is running the run away TARDIS???? The Master??? Or the Dark Guardian??? THIS COULD BE THE BRINK OF NON EXISTENCE!!!!

Tom was worn out from being the Doctor too long, yet also bitter because unlike Troughton and Pertwee, who both chose their time to leave (I honestly think BBC would have been fine, originally, with Pertwee playing the role throughout the 70s if he had wanted, as he was super professional and very popular), Tom was basically pushed out.

I just love everyone's reactions from Three being rather unhappy at seeing his past self, Two being deliberately annoying, Jo understandably getting very confused and frustrated at the lack of a clear and simple explanation and good old Sgt. Benton helping to clear things up.
    Pertwee was actually my favourite Doctor before Capaldi came along (and even then it's hard to decide which is top), which makes sense given there are a lot of similarities between their Doctors.. I know he and his era is very divisive, especially regarding Three's rude and blunt attitude towards various people but his lack of tolerance and patience with the bureaucratic mindset he often had to deal with is actually one of the reasons I like him so much. Troughton is in my top 5 as well, which is saying a lot as I'm one of those who thinks all the actors have been very good in their own way. R.I.P. to both these amazing Doctors.

      Robert Lythgoe Both 10 and 11 make snide remarks at each other as well as Matt doesn’t like David’s dress sense, makes fun of his trainers. Not sure what they would make of Jodie’s outfit. The doctor has always dresses eccentrically if you notice because I think he is meant to have some slight quirky ness being a humanoid alien with two hearts. Each one has a different approach and personality though but essentially the same person, I didn’t like Colin Baker though, his was arrogant and cocky.
