“A bit short? Oh I shouldn't worry about that, look at Jamie's”
"HEY, I'll have ye kno-.... oh, aye!..."
I really wish more footage of Troughton survived. Here’s hoping there’s another lost episode recovery soon
I was just thinking that earlier. My dream would be to get the whole of The War Games back.
It's a tragedy that the absolute brilliance of TWG, The Abominable Snowmen and The Power of the Daleks is lost, but we managed to get stuck with The Krotons.
@@fredh1720 I totally agree that we should get more Troughton episodes back, I'd love to see an episode from Power/Evil of the Daleks or the Highlanders return. I suspect that we get at least a couple more episodes back at some point. Also, I've got good news about the War Games... they found it! Like fifty years ago. I'm not sure if you're just being humorous about that, but all 10 parts exist. It's long, but very good (especially the last episode.) Troughton was truly a legend.
@@crimsong8068 Bizarrely, I wasn't joking re The War Games - I have seen it, and I absolutely adore it, but I remembered it being mostly reconstructions. No idea what I was thinking - thank you though!
In that case... yes The Power of the Daleks I'd love to see in all its glory. Evil I never quite liked as much, but it would still be wonderful to see it, and not as popular but I'd love to get back The Smugglers too. I don't doubt there's more missing episodes out there, but more than anything I just want a bit of closure: the fact that some are owned by private collectors makes me so angry.
@@fredh1720 I can't help but agree about those collectors, I wish they'd return those episodes. Sadly, most of those collectors are probably more interested in owning something nobody else does, (I'm willing to bet most of them aren't even Doctor Who fans.) Then again, better for an episode to be in a private vault than a shelf were they can deteriorate. At least it exists somewhere...
@@crimsong8068 I know in the past there have been people who haven't known that they're sought after/valuable and I understand that. But people who keep it for themselves despite knowing how much joy it would bring to so many people... it's disappointing to say the least.
"Now go away and don't fuss me, no come back, what's this, it's alright I know."
Dang, even Matt Smith would be hard pressed to keep up with how quickly Troughton delivered those lines. Jenna Coleman could manage it but she didn't play the Doctor unless Clara was pretending to be him.
I read an interview with Steven Moffatt years ago where he said that Matt Smith was at a loss of how to play the character until watching the second Doctor in "Tomb of the Cybermen." There's a lot of Troughton in Smith's performance.
Hurt: “Are you capable of speaking without flapping your hands about?”
Smith: “Yes- No.”
@@BradHollowniczkyand that decision wound up becoming the best one ever made
@@BradHollowniczky f yeah, i'm glad he did. I loved matt smiths doctor and watching these old classics im loving troutans
I always liked to imagine if there was a live action adaptation of the Hobbit made in that time, Patrick Troughton would’ve made the perfect Bilbo.
Omg yes
Oh my word, yes!!!!!
Definitely
Sylvester McCoy got the Hobbit gig
Actually the Ralph Bakshi rotoscoped animated Lord of the Rings has a very very Troughtonesque looking Bilbo. It's the first thing I thought when I saw it.
Two was the first “fun” doctor, a doctor with a sense of humor and could joke around and have fun
Didn’t the first doctor loosen up loads during his 2nd season?
Yeah kind of reminds me of Moe from The Three Stooges. Especially with the hair and facial expressions.
The First Doctor laughs more than any of them. He’s usually chuckling about his own cleverness, true, but it still counts
@@EditedAF987 He had his moments. 2 was definitely more of a clown though.
You need to watch _The Romans_ and carry on from there.
Definitely they went next level after the regeneration, though.
The animated clips of the Daleks makes me wish the original footage survived
I need to see Troughton riding around on a Dalek
Just want to put this out there: Troughton’s 2nd doctor is slightly more influential than Hartnell’s 1st. Quite a few of the traits we associate with the doctor today got their start with him.
bingo…he wasn’t a jerk to his companions, he wasn’t aloof and demeaning: he just wanted to travel and enjoy his life
I know Troughton has been long passed but I do wish they can cleverly find a way to bring the Second Doctor back again. If David Bradley can make multiple appearances as the First Doctor I really would love for the Second Doctor to come back even if it is through recast.
I don’t mean to be disrespectful to the memory of Pat Troughton, I just wish the Second Doctor can live on with modern audiences with new stories/footage.
@@TimmyVo734there are the audio adventures made by Big Finish. Frazer Hines and Michael Troughton mimic Pat perfectly
@@DS9TREKyes BF is lovely. But I’d love it more to see the Second Doctor back in the main series.
@bostonrailfan2427 Everything you're using to describe the First Doctor is inaccurate past series 1. The First gets frankly the best character development of any of the classic Doctors and is considerably more fun-loving, curious, protective and morally principled after the departure of Susan. So many people misrepresent Hartnell's depiction off the first episode and introduction of the Daleks, but he's downright whimsical in The Roman's and The Celestial Toymaker.
My favorite Doctor. Without his transformation, physically from Hartnell and narratively into the energetic, crusading hero of time and space, Dr. Who would never have lasted long enough to become the juggernaught it is today.
Exactly what I thought too, really underrated Doctor, without the Second Doctor there would be no other after him.
I give Troughton a ton of credit. He is the reason we are still watching this show in 2024. That he was able to take over from the original Doctor in the form of William Hartnell and not only carry on interest in the show but also expand on it with his own blend of quirkiness, humor with the cosmic hobo approach often confusing and fooling his enemies into thinking him the fool until it was too late! Legendary stuff and so watchable even today!
"Doctor, get down!.. right.. Bazooka!' that's so Lethbridge-Stewart. Until Nicholas Courtney wrote his book 'Getting away with it", I never realized he was constantly terrified of being found out he wasn't really a very good actor and would be written out of the next episode.
I never knew that! I wonder if I could still find the book somewhere. 🤔
@@susanscott8653 It's called 'Still Getting Away with it"
Most people are scared of performing even if it's their job. Peter Cushing said that actors are balls of insecurity. Michelle Pfeiffer suffers from imposter syndrome. Patrick Troughton was very open about how doing things live was "terror!"
My favorite Lethbridge-Stewart line is the “Five rounds rapid!” line
@@tomnorton4277considering Jamie Pressley, Margot Robbie and Samara Weaving, Michelle has nothing to fear these days
4:09 " A Penguin with it's arse on fire "
Poor Frobisher
There would be no other incarnations of the Doctor if Troughton didn't work as well as he did. Just as important to the show history as William Hartnell himself as the Original.
I’d like to take a moment to just gush about how weirdly wholesome it is to see 2 playing with the human factor Daleks like they’re his kids. He even gives them names, and their voices are somehow simultaneously adorable and terrifying.
_"Dizzy Doctor!"_
Thus the Cult of Skaro was born!!!!!
Happy Times and Places
The Second Doctor was a legend.
troughton is the most historically interesting of the doctors, i think, because despite his run being infamous for not many episodes surviving, the way that he played the character survives arguably more than any other actor who played the doctor up to the present day. his take on the character is the most influential and yet so much of it is just gone
JNT's decision to have him show up and Deus Ex Machina so many times during his run as the show leader doubtlessly helped xD
3:38 The Second Doctor: Well pinch me obviously
1 second later: *Regrets it*
Troughton is such a joy to watch on screen.
Victoria is so cute: " Doctor! You'll catch your death!"
If there's one thing I can thank JNT for, it's giving troughton the record for most return appearences (7 episodes, 10 if you count the 5 doctors as a 4 parter)
Two was - during that era - most children's first Doctor - the reason for many writers and show directors joining up with the Doctor Who production team of that time
Plus, Troughton realized early on that the show would follow him anywhere else he worked - so, he decided to Adam West it pretty much from the minute Pertwee took over xD
Troughton remains one of the finest Doctors ever to maneuver the TARDIS. It is a pity that he only served for 3 years.
an absolute mad lad, and we love him for it
So he is officially the first "mad lad" doctor
I'm in the minority in having Colin Baker as my favourite Doctor, but that's mostly because I only ever saw a very few episodes of the first four. Had I seen the entire series, classic and revival, I've little doubt that Troughton would be my favourite.
it’s online for free if you’re in the US
His audio plays as the Doctor for Big Finish are fantastic.
Second Doctor will always be my favorite doctor
I remember watching Enemy Of The World for the first time and the bit where he says "grab the bucket'n'spade!" sounded more like "grab the f***ing spade!"
1:26 Troughton does let's plays
"I imagine you have orders to destroy me" in "The Wheel in Space" is a good example of the Doctor playing coy with the Cybermen, and one of them gets quite a shock.
I look at this man.... and i love him.
The 2nd Doctor was pretty much a walking shitpost and I love it. Yet you just know that behind the sillyness, behind his clowning around there was an incredible intellect and cunning and he always felt two steps ahead of everyone else
That scene at the end when the Cybermans shooting at him and he’s jumping alabout dodging is definitely his funniest scene!
So many of his scenes seem so improvised I love it
Watched the original show with Hartnell age 8 and, yes, I did shrink behind the sofa. Troughton was 'my' Doctor
4:10, bro turned into Tom Cat
To me, Troughton was always the original trickster hero Doctor who’s take on the character would be hugely influential for many other fellow Doctors
1st Doctor: "What's happened to the little fellow?"
Meanwhile, Patrick Toughton was actually slightly taller than William Hartnell.
My favourite Doctor of all time. Let’s hope more of his lost episodes are found.
Classic Doctors To The Daleks 😮😮
New Doctors To The Daleks 😡😡
*''OH MY WORD''*
These are my two favourite scenes in the whole video 1:15 and 3:09
Okay maybe I slept on Patrick Troughton, I loved the kinda chaotic energy he radiates
I've never seen much of 2, but damn I wish I did now!
The Invasion, Enemy of the World...great places to jump on.
My personal favourite Doctor Who of all time.
My doctor. The best of them all.
doctor gaming xDDD
*Doctor GAMING!!*
He was the one that changed everything about the doctors to follow an absolute legendary character actor was Patrick, in all his career on screen, both big and small. A leading man to a great character actor.
As the second doctor, he gave the doctor something, which has never left a bit of mystery and devilment and himself, the child like humorous of us all. Doctor Who 2rd is the turning point of the future of everything that was to come that imp and smile and wink to the years to follow 50/60 years of drama and comedy and those companions who kept coming, it still has the same story but times do change so did the doctor but it is the same person just wearing different faces. Imagine if it was to start tomorrow a brand new series called Dr. WHO Adventures in time and space. Who would be the first doctor played by?
He was a definite improvement on the stodgy First Doctor. I think he holds up far better...I'd put him on a par with Three and Four, surely. I can't imagine the series could have been sustainable without him.
No one cares what you think :(
@@TakeNoteOfThat…and bow is it wrong? he was played differently and had a personality that resonated more today than the first’s portrayal
there’s a reason actors imitate him than the first
i agree…just because it was the first doesn’t make Hartnell’s portrayal better, his doctor was different and was harder to like and if not for Troughton doing his own thing it would have been done in a year or two
"Jamie. Zoe. When I say run..."
Two reminds me *two* much of eleven 🤣
My favorite Doctor.
This brought back great memories thank you!!
I would love to see him have a perfect return in modern doctor who, he kinda returned in the day of the doctor, but I would have loved a physical full appearance kinda similar to twice upon a time with the 1st doctor
1:11 This is gold 😂
Patrick Troughton is my four favourite doctor who and I love the animated doctor who story but i wish we had more surviving doctor who story because I will be great to see more of the second Doctor episode surviving story
Oh my giddy aunt!
1:48 the beast has awakaned
Absolutely loved this !!! Thank you !!🎉🎉
this is absolutely me new favourite youtube video, thank you for making this :')))))
2:50 2 your 11 is showing!
I just wish the second and the fourth could have met. I think they would have gotten along far better than him and the third.
if it wasn't for tom being stingy, that could have been very possible in the 5 doctors. i can imagine patrick and tom bouncing off one another.
@@barple367Five hiding his pride, Three trying to solve the problem alone, One shaking his head in disappointment and making a snarky insult…oh the fun we lost out on
This just Shows that 1 May have been the first time we saw the character, but two was where the doctor that we know and love originates.
I love him sm
"TRAAAAAIN?"
My favorite Doctor hands down!!!!
Even if he did inadvertently (as seen in 'The Evil of the Daleks') give the Daleks to tech to create the Cult of Skaro (watch the blu ray or DVD or failing that the CD or if you are really lucky ask the Doctor to show you the adventure himself, although it might wear him out somewhat) and do the math...
RIP Pat

0:51 “They’re playing trains!”
I’m sorry the second doctor is my favorite
Oh my word.
Great jumping gobstoppers!
His snark is the same as the 6th
I always confused Doctor Two with Moe from the 3 Stooges... 🤣
Cool clipshow, but just for fun, should have included a scene from that one Adventures of Sinbad movie where Patrick Troughton played an alchemist/wizard, who was pretty Doctor-like. When Doctor 2 became a cannibal, that was one of the few Colin Baker episodes worth watching, imo...could have used another clip from that one too. 🤣
The GOAT
I wish there was an easy way for ppl outside of the UK to watch classic who. I watched the whole series the first time Twitch broadcasted the entire series one summer. But it was so fast. I need to rewatch classic who badly

4:06 isn't from "Doctor Who". It's a clip from the "Three Stooges" featuring Moe Howard.
1:35 A beach...wait...that cliff...that angle it looks like...wait it can't be...but they've used it for other shots before...
Wait...is that the same beach as 10 saying good bye to Rose?! The same beach Rory, Brian and 11 showed up on during Dinosaurs on a Spaceship?!
This is why he's a favour
He freakin' *hopped* XD
One of my favourite Troughton scenes is is episode 2 of The War Games, when he marches into the WWI offices as though he owns the whole place and starts shouting at everyone "How DARE you!" 😂 And then he did the same to Jamie when they brought him in and Jamie just played along. 🥰
He pioneered 'act annoyed and no-one will bother you' well before George Costanza.
Yk, I gave 2nd doctor a name so I would be confused: Robert
GOAT, Matt Smith is second. They're the funniest
"What's a passport, Doctor?"
"Some sort of official mumbo-jumbo" 😂
Honestly can't believe this one's missing
"Don't worry Jamie it will only affect the island"
"Doctor, we happen to be ON the island"
"OH MY WORD"
And I thought 11 was mad
Matt Smith based his portrayal of the Doctor on the 2nd :)
Look at Jaime's!
No Volcano? Shame!
1:12 💀😂
Troughton was where I started. I stopped at Tom baker.
I know I'm one of the few that never liked Baker
I didn't care for the 4th. The 3rd and 5th are my Doctors. 😎
I think Baker was great, but I think he was let down but some of his stories and cheap looking sets sometimes.
Tom Baker can only play Tom Baker. He's admitted that consistently in his later years, yet still has the arrogance to think that he's some kind of god. The man is a textbook egotist.
This is heresy of the highest order
he’s overrated…longevity doesn’t equal greatness
Is the second doctor still alive?
Dead? 🚫
Gaming ✅
My favorite Doctors in order 12, 3, 4, 8, 9, 7, 2, 11, 1, 10, 5, 6.......... Sorry, never seen 13 lol!!! Also not a fan of War Doctor and apparently there's a Fugitive Doctor meh.
Now about the second Doctor, i feel like he was the first one who set the tone for the Doctor's inner silliness after the original. Definitely inspired Nine and Eleven.
That's the worst ranking I have ever seen
@@saintpepsi8602oh gee, did not having 10 at the very top upset you? 🙄
12 was inspired heavily by 3, 11 by 2…so them close together it fitting
There's way more than just the Fugitive Doctor as an extra. The retconning they did adds dozens, maybe hundreds of Doctors before the First Doctor.
@@DS9TREK and ironically, it was canon when the first said it long ago!
he literally said he had past lives in the 60s!
Your on screen text is quite unnecessary, Jamie. Yes i know, now he'll just add more next time.

Victoria and Zoe were absolutely gorgeous. I wish the modern assistants were like them instead of being feisty.
how dare the new companions not be eye candy barely able to do more than scream and get kidnapped 🙄
i take it you never saw Jo, Sarah Jane, Lela, or Romana
Classic Who is real Who. New Who is WOKE garbage.
Even 9 - 12?
@@fkez0510 Yes. New Who had kiddie doctors, all acting too over the top at all times. They elevated the companions above the Doctor.
12 was more like a classic Doctor, but the stories during 12 were even more woke than in other seasons, maybe only less woke than with GRRRRRRRRRRRRL Doctor.
