Terry Kath had this whole song in his head....amazing..... Now you see why the band was never the same after Terry died

Saw Chicago back in late 60’s when they were an unknown and no album to boot. They were the warm up band for Jimi Hendrix and boy, did they blow us away. They started with this song and played their 1st album, which was not released until several months later. The rest is history

Excellent Introduction. One of my favorite rock bands due to their incredible musicality. (and horns!)

I mean, WOW, right?. My first listen to this too, Justin and I'm equally blown away. That's some beautiful energy and I can't wait to hear more. I'm more familiar with the later Cetera era but it was not my scene. Then I saw the video for "25 or 6 to 4" and the awesome Terry Kath doing his thing. Now I'm invested in this early era. This opener sounds like an overture. Amazing stuff.

From a fan of guitarists, this is the Chicago album most worth checking out. After guitarist Terry Kath (who was on vocals here) died, they became more of a pop group, featuring bassist Peter Cetera on vocals.

Talk about being confident in one's music. Not only a stellar debut album, but a double LP debut at that!
And just about every track is worthy.

I was captivated by this and watched the whole, unedited video (it’s been a few months since I’ve done that, actually). I played with musicians who liked Chicago but I didn’t get into it. I guess I wasn’t ready at the time. I’ll happily listen to more! 😁

Justin, isn't this just incredibly good? This is one of my favorite songs. It still thrills me and I've been listening to it for 50 years. I love their 1st, 2nd, 5th, and 7th albums, and knowing your penchant for jazz and prog, I recommend you work your way through those four albums here on the channel. I will love experiencing them right along with you.

Far and away my absolute favorite CTA cut, it was ( IMO ) Terry Kaths masterpiece.
As you say, it's a true introduction as it displays the talent of every member of the band. Who puts out a double album on their debut? Actually, first three albums, all doubles! Terry Kath was the driving force and the heart of this band and he is missed tremendously. BTW, the alternate video is locked 🔐👍🤠

The Daily Doug on CZcams listened to the whole first side of that CTA. So impressed, he had to listen to the other 3 sides in a row on the next episode. Only one track he did not like. The rest of the album is outstanding, even for Chicago. CTA is my favorite of theirs, and I do like the one song on it that most people skip over. Do the whole album, JP. You'll love it.

Best opener of a debute album ever, the great Terry Kath laying down the truth for the audience this band will take you for a Ride, from Blues, Rock, Soul, Prog, Classical, Jazz, Funk and Pop; Chicago has it all. With a Guitar player who Jimmy called was better that him, a fantastic drummer, aggressive bass playing, horns from hell, harmonies, 3 great vocalist and 5 great composers what else do you want in a band

"Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?" is probably the only standout track for me on this album.

Probably bought both Chicago 1&2 together and was again probably my 2nd batch of albums after buying both Sweet Baby James & Mudslide Slim by James Taylor. It was a landslide or deluge of Chicago but I was younger and gravitated towards the hits of these albums. Nowadays, I still love the hits but can hear despite some comments, the inventiveness and playfulness of the band.
Terry Kath’s vocals are just at a peak here.
You must have read my mind, at work I was playing my WLS radio influenced mix CDs and Chicago was sprinkled in here and there. I made a mental note to ask for some more Chicago and… here it is. What?
Very cool, thoroughly enjoyed that and hope for more.
Chicago 2 was my favorite but 1 will be a bit newer to me, since it was played less. I’m starting to regret that decision.
Colour My World was my first slow dance.

Chicago's first three studio albums are their best in my opinion. Chicago III from 1971 doesn't get the same amount of attention as the first two because there were no *big* hit singles but it was still great and one of their more experimental outings.

Afternoon, Justin. Dave from London. So you've discovered Chicago Transit Authority - Goody, Goody! One of the first albums I bought, back in 1969, and it's still my favourite of theirs. As you say, this showcasing track has so much variety, and this applies to the whole album. P.S. my song ref Goody Goody was covered by Chicago on their excellent Night And Day, Big Band release.

Despite some good tracks on the next three or four albums, Chicago Transit Authority is certainly the only Chicago album that I enjoy as a whole, yet even this one is marred by useless pieces, like the painful "Free Form Guitar" which stretches over more than six minutes (I'll let you guess the musical content...!🙄), the brief "Prologue, August 29, 1968" or the interminable 14-minute "Liberation" whose end sounds like a real liberation after having stretched this piece to its last intrenchments.😉

So.... yet another 60's album. Nothing i've not heard the likes of countless times before, an this seemed needlessly long to me. And speaking as a confirmed brass lover, it appears you can have too much of a good thing. Jeez, i thought the relentless 'parping' was never going to end. From an ordinary start, I found myself losing interest within minutes, and that's never good.
