Yeah, the girls are kids here. The "1997" is the birth year of Suzuka (Su-Metal) that got crucified, and the performance date was on her 16th birthday. "Death" is a pun on how Japanese introduces themselves, desu. So, "I am Moa-Metal, I am Yui-Metal, I am Su-Metal, we are Babymetal. We are/death, we are/death, we are/death". Neck brace is a tribute to Yoshiki the drummer of X Japan who broke his neck during a performance, as well as in reference to an earlier song Headbangerrr which is also a coming-of-age song. There are several Metallica homage, including the massive statue.
School girl becomes goddess through many spiritual symbolisms... it might be shock performance at first but if you think about it it's a pretty regular anime plot line in Japan lol
Please consider checking out "Oh Majinai" they collaborated with Joakim Broden of Sabaton and it's glorious!

Just a slight correction to your otherwise well-done post...this concert was December 21, 2013, the day after Su's 16th birthday. Other than that, you are pretty spot on. Just for context and pronunciation purposes, the word "desu" in Japanese is pronounced without the "u" at the end, so it sounds like "des"/"death". The Japanese friggin' LOVE puns like this!
One other context thing for anyone, Yoshiki from X Japan was told he MUST wear the neck brace anytime he performs or risk doing serious, permanent damage to his neck...possibly even killing himself. This is because (as the OP said), he severely hurt (not sure if he broke) his neck because he would headbang SO hard during performances.

For a bit more context, if you're familiar with the controversy surrounding Doug Walker and Channel Awesome, one of the complaints was that during a crucifixion scene in one of his movies there were insufficient safety measures in place causing the actor in that scene to require hospitalization and being told to walk it off. You see, Doug or whoever did the directing actually suspended her by both her hands and feet. Even if there's no driving of nails in the skin as in the classic crucifixion story, the part that's painful and the reason it's an execution method is from the gravity of being suspended forward and the damage it causes to internal organs and the neck as well as causing suffocation, not the nails. Compare the crucifixion scene in Life Of Brian where everyone on a cross had a stable platform to stand on. So the brace may be an extra safety precaution with a plot device to keep it from being out of place or in a nod to Yoshiki it may be a way to avoid a repeat of what happened to him. That's also why the crucifixion scene here was a bit of a white knuckle ride wondering if this is OK and safe considering she's technically still a kid. That's the same reaction I have every time current era X Japan plays Kurenai or X and wondering if I'm going to see Yoshiki unresponsive or dead mid song. They've lost enough members already. They don't need to lose their leader too. Then again Yoshiki's known to be physically delicate while Toshi's been known to be emotionally delicate. Speaking of which, have you read Toshis book yet? That ones a pretty wild ride too.

The neckbrace is an homage to X-Japan who's drummer broke his neck headbanging. Their producer Koba who put this all together is a big fan of Metallica (that was the riff from One at the start) and X-Japan. Also the statue is the Virgin Mary but it's also an homage to the statue in 'And Justice for All'. I recommend 'BxMxC' it's their newest music video and very different from what you've seen so far.
This concert was for the 16th Birthday of their lead singer Su. She was born in 1997. She is the legend of 1997. They had a concert Legend of 1999 six months earlier for Yui and Moa's 14th Birthdays. They are only 2 weeks apart in age. People think they are sisters but they are just the same height and weight and dressed alike. Their faces are actually quite different they don't look so similar in street clothes. Their producer Koba thought they were too talented for Jpop and stole them for Metal.

    - First of all, welcome to the wonderful world of BABYMETAL!
    - BABYMETAL is a metal/j-pop fusion band formed in 2010, they call their music “kawaii metal” (cute metal).
    - The three members of BABYMETAL include the lead vocalist, Su-Metal (Suzuka Nakamoto, born 12-20-1997), “scream and dance” members Yuimetal (Yui Mizuno, born 6-20-1999), and Moametal (Moa Kikuchi, born 7-4-1999).
    - This show was on December 21st, 2013 and was a show to celebrate Su-Metal’s 16th birthday. The crucifixion at the end of the show was meant to symbol Su giving up her life as a J-Pop idol to be reborn as a metal goddess.
    - This show was in Makuhari Messe and had a crowd of about 8,000-9,000 people. This is quite small compared to some of the shows they do now, but this was also way back in 2013 before they had even put their first album out.
    - The part where you mention Su-Metal’s make-up running, that’s because during the song before this, she sand a slow, emotional ballad and she started to cry. She is a phenomenal vocalist.
    - This is the third song in what some fans have coined the “Trilogy of Death”, which refers to the last three songs of the Legend 1997 show. These three songs would be: Headbanger, Akatsuki (Unfinished), and BABYMETAL Death. These three songs tell a really neat story to close the show on.
    - The neck brace is a reference to the “Headbanger” music video. It is referred to as the “legendary corset” and is an homage to X-Japan drummer Yoshiki who injured his neck while head banging.
    - There is a LOT of weird, complex lore around BABYMETAL. Even hardcore fans don’t understand all that stuff. So take all that lore at the begging with a grain of salt lol

Good reaction (you probably didn't need to cut anything on this one) - and you eventually found the translation for the opening intro.
Legend 1997 was the title of the show - it was December 2013 celebrating Su-metal the lead singer's 16th birthday - she was born in 1997 so she is the legend of 1997. Yuimetal and Moametal were both 14.
Basically this show was the final step in BABYMETAL transitioning from Idol group sub-unit (it had this narrative running all the way through and even started with a lip-synced dance remix of their song 'Headbanger') to independent metal band - it was also Su-metal's final step in her transition from J-Pop Idol - she was sacrificing her human existence and life as Suzuka Nakamoto, a J-Pop Idol, to be reborn as Su-metal, a Metal Goddess chosen to lead the Metal Resistance. (They have a lot of lore, just run with it)
'BABYMETAL Death' was the first track on the first album and was most often used as the show opener (without the crucifixion) - it is the perfect introduction - that is what the lyrics are:- "B - A - B - Y - M - E - T - A - L Death Death Death Death Death Death. Su-metal death. Yuimetal death. Moametal death. BABYMETAL death. Death Death Death Death Death Death."
It is a play on words. There is no 'TH' sound in Japanese, so to a Japanese speaker death sounds like desu (the U is silent) spoken with a slight lisp. Desu means "To be - I am - you are - we are - it is" etc ... so in Japan you might introduce yourselves as "Metal Mass desu" (We are Metal Mass).
All they were doing throughout the song was introducing themselves by name and introducing BABYMETAL by name - and 'death' is just the sort of thing you'd expect to be chanted by any self respecting metal band and their audience while the lead singer is crucified.
There were a couple of homages in this performance too. The opening drum beat is an homage to Metallica's 'One' and the statue crumbling at the end pays homage to Metallica's Justice For All tour of 1989 where they also had a statue (Lady Justice) crumble at the end of their shows. The neck brace is a tribute to X Japan drummer/pianist/songwriter/composer Yoshiki who damaged his neck so badly headbanging that he has to wear a neck brace most of the time, especially when performing.
On special occasions 'BABYMETAL Death' was used later in the show - Legend 1997 was the title of the show celebrating Su-metal's 16th birthday ... and they only crucify Su on special occasions. So far that has happened 5 times, the last was at Legend S in December 2017 to help her celebrate her 20th birthday - and that one had extra flames.
    Did I mention? #notacult
Every song they do is different, so don't expect a crucifixion every time - do expect choreo and lots of energy along with great music and Su-metal's vocal skills. For your next song I think I would recommend 'Headbanger' live at Legend 1997 (so same show a couple of songs before this one), but you could pick pretty much any other of their songs and you'll enjoy it.
Some songs lean more towards their pop roots (it sounds like you already heard 'Gimme Chocolate'), others are good and heavy and they do everything in between, none are the same and nearly all of them will surprise you in the best ways. Live BABYMETAL is always best although their official videos are also very good.

Babymetal and their brand of Metal, Kawaii (Cute) Metal are the most refreshing new genre I've seen since Slipknot first appeared 20 years ago. They fill arenas with ease and have played: Wembley Arena 12,500; Budokan 14,000; Yokohama Arena 17,000; Saitama Super Arena 36,500; Tokyo Dome 55,000 (2 consecutive nights). They are in the middle of a 10 night run of concerts at Budokan, an arena that bands only play when they're invited to (The Beatles were given one night). The band the girls use - The Kami (God) Band are all superb, massively respected Metal musicians and you might enjoy seeing a Babymetal performance where all 4 band members play a solo as an intro to really appreciate their skills. *BABYMETAL - LEGEND 1997 CONCERT*.
    Song: BABYMETAL DEATH.
The monologue at the start is in Japanese.
So hear is (The English Translation of the opening Monologue).
    "Legend One-Nine-Nine-Seven.
It is the story that, receiving the legendary corset from the god of the Metal,
she abandons being human and shall be reborn as a goddess.
The gene which has been determined from ancient time
is destined to be guided, boarding on the ark of time.
    The apocalypse prophesied
    the DOOMSDAY. Towards it,
    there remains…
    little time…
BABYMETAL DEATH is normally the song that they would open a show with as all there are doing is introducing themselves and geting the crowd fired up and ready for the rest of the show. The lyrics start with the crowd spelling out "B - A - B - Y - M - E - T - A - L" then the girls tell us who they are "Su-metal desu (I am SU-Metal") , "Yuimetal desu (I am Yuimetal"), "Moametal desu (I am Moametal"), "BABYMETAL desu (we are Babymetal"), now this may look a little strange to you as when introducing themselves individually it is ("I am") yet when introducing themselves as a group it is ("we are"), lets explain that first thing when saying the word "desu" (the U is silent) so when Yui is introducing her self she says "Yuimetal des" but as Yui is saying the word "DES" at the end of saying it she will put her tongue between her teeth makeing a sound like "TH" so you get "Yuimetal des-th" and that put her tongue between her teeth makes the word "Des-th" mean (I am), now when they are introducing them selfs as a group they say "Babymetal des" but they don't put they tongue between her teeth at the end of the word "Des" this makes the word "Des" sound different and changes the meaning of it to (we are), ther is one more word to the lyrics of this and that is the fans line or word in this song they are to chant "Des-th" but even that neads explaining nothing is ever easy with Babymetal, they like to play with things especially words there sounds and meanings they noticed that when introducing themselves in Japanese saying the word "Des-th" ("I am") it sounds very much like the English word "DEATH" they liked that so for the fans part in this song it would be in English to chant "DEATH" repeatedly, all so that is were they got the song title as well it is not just *DEATH* the song title is *BABYMETAL DEATH*.
Well that is it for the lyrics in this song they would do this twice then the music go's crazy good and the girls run around all over the stage interacting with the fans and geting them up on there feet bouncing and geting the fans chanting "Death Death Death Death Death Death" they would keep this going for a time ending up in one big chant from everyone of "BABYMETAL DEATH" a big explosion lot's of pyrotechnics end of introduction song everyone ready let the show begin.
But this time BABYMETAL DEATH was not played at the opening of the concert it was at the very end of the concert the last of a five song encore, so why move this song from the opening to the end of the concert, well the (LEGEND 1997 CONCERT) was a special one from the beginning to the end but we are not getting it to that now this is about one song in it and of course it had a special role to play in this concert but one all bye it's self, the concert was named LEGEND 1997 because that was the year SU-METAL was born on the 20/12/1997 this concert was on the 21/12/2013 the day after Su-metal's 16th birthday and as SU said once "this was her birthday party concert and that all the fans coming to her party to help her celibrate her 16th birthday was the best gift that she had received that year".
So what was this songs role to be at this concert, well like it says in the opening monologue "receiving the legendary corset from the god of the Metal she abandons being human and shall be reborn as a goddess", now how did that work like this, the smoke that appears around SU's feet before she collapses was to put her to sleep, the crucifixion is the abandoning of being human but not before receiving the legendary corset (the neck brace), the scream her rebirth as a Goddess, and the chanting of "Death Death Death Death" with crossed kitsunes (the Fox sign) that is the army giving there Goddess her power, first Yui and Moa face the army and receive there power then they turn around and give that power to SU-Metal for she was never to be just a Goddess SU is a METAL GODDESS, she is our Queen, our Goddess.
"All hail our QUEEN". "All hail The GODDESS of Metal". *SU-METAL*.
Bye the way #NotaCult, most definitely #NotaCult and anyone claiming different will be dragged in front of your Goddess and thrown into the pit of frogs or if you catch her on a bad day she will just burn you.🤘🦊🤘

2019 had BABYMETAL's longest US tour so far.
They played 20 dates, including their first arena show in the USA at the LA Forum.
That was also the album release concert for 'Metal Galaxy', their third studio album.

Babymetal seems to be something you can never un-see , My first video I saw was Gimme Chocolate , I was sitting there going WTF , you noticed the shred right away with Death , it took me about 3 straight views to realize the music is crazy good. I turned out to love babymetal , if you do other video's you learn Suzuka is an amazing singer with a phenomenal voice. I would suggest going through a few more older songs , then at the end listen to BxMxC to see the fully grown up Babymetal. The third album has a more J-pop feel but some songs still shred . I still think they gave a great kick in the ass to metal at a time when the metal scene was dying.

Great reaction! Thank you for giving BABYMETAL a chance. Here is a little bit of BABYMETAL info...In 2019, BABYMETAL became the first Asian artists to hit #1 on BILLBOARD's Top Rock Albums chart with their latest album, "Metal Galaxy" and a few months ago it was announced that the album won the MTV Japan VMA 2020 award for BEST ALBUM OF THE YEAR. BABYMETAL has been melting faces for TEN years. Su, the lead singer, is currently 23 years old, while Moa and Yui are 21. Yes, they were very young when BABYMETAL was formed!
In this video, this concert was for Su-metal, the lead singer's, 16th birthday.
BABYMETAL have performed with, toured, or opened for Metallica, Korn, Dragonforce, Guns N' Roses, Lady Gaga, Rob Halford of Judas Priest (there's a great youtube video of their performance with Rob at a metal award show), and Red Hot Chili Peppers (there is a youtube video of them performing Gimme Chocolate with RHCP, as well as with Korn, and DragonForce), to name a few of many. They have performed at large metal events/concerts in front of 65,000+ skeptical metalheads in Europe (Glastonbury, Download, Sonisphere, etc), US, and Asia. Plus the 20+ awards they have been given. They have 50+ songs and each one is different from the other, so I hope you give the other songs a try. By the way, they have some really great heavy songs too, and I hope you like guitar solos, as well as bass and drum solos, like I do, because they have them too. 🦊🤘

Released on 2013 Jan. 9th, coupled with IJIME, DAME, ZETTAI (included in the limited edition).
Lyric: KITSUNE of METAL GOD / Music: KITSUNE of METAL GOD / Arr.: Yuyoyuppe
Usually, this is the opening tune of BABYMETAL's concert.
    BABYMETAL DEATH (We Are BABYMETAL)
    B x A x B x Y x M x E x T x A x L DEATH!!
[i] The letters "DEATH" only means "To be/ I am / We are" (= DESU/DES_).
The official lyric really consists of only the above one line. Maybe the staff thought too many "DEATH"s are inappropriate.
The Japanese word "desu" (??) is a copula (= to be). The Eastern Japanese almost drop "u" of this word, so the word "desu/des" sounds like "death". And someone started writing "DEATH" instead of "??" (desu). It makes sense only where the Japanese word "desu" is expected to come. The title "BABYMETAL DEATH" means only "We are BABYMETAL." No relation to the death itself.
I'm not sure of its origin, but I saw long before such a character as a vampire or a death metal singer in a comic and all his "??" (desu) were replaced with "DEATH" to emphasize his character. With such an air, it works well. Without such an air, it probably doesn't work.
    [ii] Is This Death Metal?
There is a genre named "Death Metal". The sound of this tune seems to fall within that genre, and the lyric writer may have put many "DEATH"s to emphasize the Death-Metal-ness. It might be alright to use many "DEATH"s without thinking of death if some of Death Metal bands also chose their style just to differentiate themselves rather than driven by the feeling about death. But I don't know the Death Metal well.
ROMAJI LYRIC AND NOTES ARE BELOW.
    BABYMETAL DEATH (We Are BABYMETAL)

    (DEATH (x30))

    Notes
The lines marked with "S" are sung by SU-METAL, with "Y" by YUIMETAL, with "M" by MOAMETAL, with "A" by all three members (added on 2017 Mar. 17).
I think I hear this, but not for sure.
I'm sure these lines never means the death itself. I have no idea for translation.
On a certain BBS, I asked what words the audience of the concerts shout in this part, and I got an answer "DEATH" without dissents.

it's not death. they are saying "desu." it's a polite way of introducing yourself in japanese. that's why every so often the girl says "moa metal desu" is because she is moa-metal and she is introducing herself. this song is basically an introduction song for the members. it's also a play on how desu sounds like death so they made a death metal like song for it.

    Maybe summing up:
DEATH is an instrumental piece that Babymetal use to open their concerts in the past.
The main girl has some number where she go solo, e.g. AKATSUKI.
The two side girls are well represented in the song ONEDARI DAISAKUSEN.
The song of three of them is MEGITSUNE.
The neckbrace was told in HEADBANGER MV 2012. It is also a reference to Yoshiki, an X-Japan who hurt his neck from too much headbanging.
Thanks! Looking forward to your next Babymetal reaction video! ^^

Definitely check out some of the X-Japan videos. I especially recommend any of the videos from the Last Live that took place in December 1997. It was set to be their last concert. They reunited several years later but without one of their guitarist, Hide, who died half a year after The Last Live. This band was a major influencer on Visual Kei and Rock/Metal in Japan.

The neck brace is a reference to the video of another of their songs, "Headbangeeeeeerrrrrrr!!!!!". It's become a bit of an iconic symbol ever since.

It's funny you mentioned a Sabaton concert you went to, as they opened for Babymetal in 2018, and Joakim performed a song with Babymetal. In fact, his image is a main part of Babymetal song called Oh! Majinai. As far as collabs go, Babymetal has performed songs with some rather big names in metal, like Rob Halford and Dragonforce.
I'd recommend the videos for Akatsuki and Rondo of Nightmare (with the Mischiefs of God intro).

You talk about how the young the girls are.. They are actually about your age now.
Their concerts are nothing like this now. It's more like a Lady Gaga Pop Techno show now.

Babymetal has suprisingly extensive lore, which got me interested in them besides their wild concept and extreme talent.

they are repeating "desu" which means "i am" in japanese, but it also sounds like death so it's a play on words!

Ok, ya that is cool with the death metal music and all. But, you never got to hear the girls sing at all. I believe that this is one of their older performances and obviously the girls are still quite young. I would highly recommend reacting to the following live performance, which also happens to be one of my favs. It is a lot more recent as well.
BABYMETAL - PA PA YA!! (feat. F.HERO) (OFFICIAL)
(also includes a cameo performance by a Thai rapper called F. Hero which is actually pretty cool)

The inside joke is that what you hear as "Death" is Des, a Japanese phrase for "I am".
