My 1st Reaction to the Kawaii-Metal Band 'BabyMetal'. I was completely unprepared for what appeared in front of me with this amazingly talented and extremely young band. Their dance routines and chorography are seemlessly put together to match what your hearing and the Main vocalist is very impressive. Overall, i wasnt expecting what actually happened. I LOVE BabyMetal ther are freaking awesome! The clash of J-Pop and Metal shouldnt work, but it just grows on you quickly! I will certainly be reacting to another one of their performances soon!

@Erik Lerström A matter of opinion, I guess. Personally, I love _Metal Galaxy._ I think it's their best album yet. Even without YuiMetal. I mean, how can you beat _Oh! MAJINAI!,_ which is best described as a J-pop-infused heavy metal pirate sea shanty. XD But this album is definitely more experimental than the previous two. Which says something, since, let's face it, BABYMETAL has been an experiment from the word go. :-)

I was, like most adult guys, looking over my shoulder to make sure no one else was watching me watch them. I felt guilty for enjoying them so much. I wanted to cry. I had left metal behind decades ago and they were bringing me back. There was no denying that the Kami Band was the real thing and the girls just set the whole thing off. It shouldn't have worked, but it did. Magnificently. Up until I saw Road, I thought I was one of the few weird people who liked them. When I saw the crowd, I was overjoyed that there were so many others.

@@ROFLer1988 That's cool. As I said, I like both. My reaction is just to them being labelled as "better" live. More enjoyable to many, sure, but "better" to me is largely objectively measurable and given the album is precise vision of the BABYMETAL team, it's hard to argue live is "better" except in dance and crowd interaction. It's impossible to be better live when you don't have infinite takes and you have to compromise for local sound systems and acoustics. My reaction to these kind of comments largely stems from them coming off as dismissive of the albums, which are gold-plated brilliant. No arguing just explaining my comment.

Great reaction (and thanks for the free uncut version on Patreon). I will try to answer some of your questions - and you may have missed 9 years of Babymetal but I think there are still tickets available for their UK tour in February next year (Glasgow, Manchester, Cardiff and Hammersmith) if you're interested in going to see one of the best live shows you can see right now.
They started in 2010 as a sub-unit of a Japanese Idol group (Sakura Gakuin) which is like a school themed stage school for girls aged 11 to 15. The sub units are like after-school clubs (cooking club, baton club, science club etc - Babymetal were the 'heavy music' club). Each club has its own songs and choreo and the group performs live shows and releases an album at the end of each school year.
The girls are Suzuka Nakamoto (as Su-metal - 'vocals and dance'), Yui Mizuno (as Yuimetal 'scream and dance') and Moa Kikuchi (as Moametal 'scream and dance'). They were aged 12, 11 and 11 in 2010. This video was filmed the day after Su-metal's 16th birthday in December 2013, Yui and Moa were 14. Yui left the band a year ago having not been on stage with them for the previous 12 months because of an undisclosed health or injury problem, so Babymetal is now a duo - Su-metal and Moametal (now 21 and 20) and they are supported by any one of three other girls (known as 'avengers' dancing in Yui's place, but so far the avengers do not have a vocal role).
The whole concept was formed around Su-metal with her unusually loud (for a J-pop singer) singing style and extraordinary stage presence - she has been singing and performing professionally since about the age of 8 or 9 and was modelling and on stage when she was as young as about 5 I think. She is an incredible singer and performer, Yui nd Moa have less of a singing role (although they did have their own songs as 'Black Babymetal' performed without Su) but are also highly talented and one of their main roles is engaging with the audience, getting the crowd involved. Their producer, Kei Kobayashi (or Kobametal) saw Su's potential, as a metalhead, to front a metal band with J-pop style vocals and perhaps to bring metal and rock to the attention of a new audience as it was being forced underground with shrinking audiences in Japan by J-pop. The talent agency Amuse considered it a mad idea with no money to be made, but allowed him to continue with his project - but provided no extra funding or budget. Babymetal gained unexpected (by everybody) attention and popularity quite early on despite no budget, having to borrow clothes from other students and teachers for their first shows and videos shot on a shoe string and have gone from strength to strength ever since.
In 2013 Su was 15 and graduated from Sakura Gakuin. Babymetal split away from SG with Su to become a separate band in their own right. Yui and Moa continued to work in both SG and Babymetal while also continuing their studies (as their main priority - their parents said they would have to quit the band if their studies suffered) until they also graduated from SG in 2015.
About 'Gimme Chocolate' - this song polarises people, it is one of the songs with the biggest 'WTF' factor, so what you were told about loving it or hating it is true. You were right about the "parapapaparapapa" bit of the song - that is the one part of Su's vocals that not sung live and is on the backing track. They have far more meaningful songs, most with a positive message (eg 'Ijime, Dame, Zettai' means 'bullying, no more, forever')
Babymetal got a lot of flak and hate from 'trve metalheads' early on, but have gained respect and support from many top names in metal (Metallica, Dave Mustaine, Rob Zombie, Rob Halford and Judas Priest, DragonForce, Anthrax and too many more to name).
The video you watched is live footage from the show (Legend 1997), but has the studio audio dubbed over the top - which is a shame as most Babymetal fans will tell you they sound better (especially Su-metal) live.
At legend 1997 the ''band' you saw in the video in skeleton costumes were known as 'Babybones' and they were miming the instruments to a backing track. For the encores (5 songs) they were replaced by the Kami Band (some of Japan's very best session musicians) playing live. Ever since that show the Kami Band have been supporting Babymetal in all their live shows. There is a core of Kami Band members, but they play on a sort of rotation basis depending on their availability with their own bands and projects. For this year's tour in the US the Kami band were the guitarists and bassist from Galactic Empire and Anthony Barone, the drummer from Shadow of Intent.
If you watch more live videos from 'Legend 1997' you will see what the 'Mary' statue at the back of the stage was about and what happened to it at the end of the show - this comment is too long already to go into that now.
I really hope you do more Babymetal (I would suggest 'Megitsune', 'Ijime, Dame, Zettai', 'Headbanger' and 'Road of Resistance' to start with). Their official videos are very good but Babymetal live is where they are at their very best.

Haha, I really enjoyed that reaction! Your reaction was a pretty accurate representation of the very essence of BABYMETAL: They combine different musical worlds to something that shouldn’t work, yet somehow manage to make the result mindbogglingly satisfying. The ultimate goal is to just make you smile and enjoy, which they definitely succeeded in.
And technically there‘s not much to complain about, either. Whether you are a fan of the voices or not, there‘s no denying that the vocals are good, the same goes for the instrumentation. A positive effect of the high pitched vocals is that they throne nicely above the Metal foundation. Add to that the flawless dancing and the general quality of their live presentation, and the result is the most entertaining band ever.
This was actually a studio recording played to live footage. I‘m sure you will soon find out that their real live performances are even more awesome!
Their catalogue covers a wide range from more poppy to more Metal tunes, while often incorporating influences from other genres as well. I‘d like to recommend two songs after this:
„Road of Resistance“ is less catchy, but fast and heavy and a good example of their live qualities: czcams.com/video/zTEYUFgLveY/video.html
„Megitsune“‘s official music video for more cuteness and a very unique and Japanese composition and video: czcams.com/video/cK3NMZAUKGw/video.html
Looking forward to your next step down the foxhole! :-)

They totally changed their direction, they wanted to try new things for other regions in the world. I can kinda understand from a money-driven-point-of-view but as an audiophile who i call myself with a big hang to metal-influenced music i just cannot find ANYTHING good about their newest album Metal Galaxy. Not even one song or live performance comes even CLOSE to whatever you take from all their former songs!

  • @ForAnAngel
    @ForAnAngel Před 4 lety +25

Boy you are in for a wild ride! I've been a huge fan of theirs for the last 5.5 years, since I first saw this video. I saw them 3 times in concert just last month.
The girls were 14.5 & 16 in this video. The 2 younger girls are not twins or related (everyone thinks they are) but they are very close in age. They started in 2010 when they were 11 & almost 13. They are now 20 and almost 22. Sadly one of them left the group last year due to health reasons. She was 19 and in the group for 8 years. We still miss her very much.
Their music is described as kawaii metal (cute metal), or a mainly a combination of J-Pop idol music with heavy metal. Although they also like mixing in a lot of very different genres such as rap, edm, reggae, ska, dubstep, bollywood, as well as all the various different subgenres of metal.
Gimme Chocolate is a bit more on the poppier side but they have songs that are much more metal. Everyone says that Babymetal is better live, but I think their music videos are still worth watching. In this video, you heard the studio recording of the song, although they weren't singing live at the concert anyway. In their first few years they mainly lipsynced but since 2014 they have always sang live. Also, when you see the guys in the skeleton costumes playing the instruments in their early videos (like this one) they are only pretending to play. Later on they got actual musicians and they are pretty awesome. They dressed in white with white face paint and called themselves the Kami Band (God Band).
I think the videos you should try next should be, Megitsune (meh-GEET-soo-neh), Karate, or Road of Resistance. You will probably like all of those.
    Megitsune czcams.com/video/cK3NMZAUKGw/video.html
    Karate czcams.com/video/GvD3CHA48pA/video.html
    Road of Resistance czcams.com/video/zTEYUFgLveY/video.html
The last one is a live performance video with the Kami Band and live singing. It will give you goosebumps. It was a crowd of 20,000, twice the size of the concert in the Gimme Chocolate video and it was only a year later. Both of these concerts were the largest ones they had had up until that point.

Yuimetal & Moametal were also meant to look like twins. :-)
"So my instinct was that rest of the member should have been the opposite character. Also they added a feeling of dancing twins, so I thought Yuimetal and Moametal were a good choice. Feeling of twins was must-have, that I wanted badly. Symmetry was good, I thought."

    • @Grington300

Just felt the need to make a quick correction here, the lip sync claims are not true -
".... In this video, you heard the studio recording of the song, although they weren't singing live at the concert anyway.
In their first few years they mainly lipsynced but since 2014 they have always sang live. ...."
Su was indeed singing live throughout the whole of this concert (apart from the opening number) and always has sung live (except in some Sakura Gakuin shows and TV appearances perhaps), Yui and Moa possibly had more help from a backing track but sang live a lot more than they are given credit for doing.

I am a hard rock and metal fan in his late 60s and I got into BabyMetal back in 2014 when the hate towards them in certain quarters was at its height. Like so many, I was uncomfortable and felt awkward that I took such an instant liking to them, and wondered if there was something wrong with me. Gladly, I was able to get over myself, open my mind, open my heart, and truly believe that accepting BabyMetal into my life has made me a better person. By setting aside my prejudices and Western preconceptions, BabyMetal became the gateway to other great Japanese groups such as Wagakki Band, Doll$Boxx, and, oh hell yes, Band Maid!

Hi Jarrel (I hope I got that right)! Great reaction! Thanks for checking out my favorite band BABYMETAL! "Gimme Chocolate" is a straight up WTF song especially for people new to the band. It's certainly one of their more poppier songs. You nailed the message of the song, it's about wanting to each chocolate but also worrying about gaining weight. You have a really good ear as this was the studio recorded audio played over the proshot video from their live concert "Legend 1997" celebrating Su-Metal's (lead singer) 16th birthday.
The name BABYMETAL is actually a play on words in Japanese. To write "heavy metal" it's "ヘビメタ" (hebi meta), but with just adding 2 marks to the first character you get this "ベビメタ" (bebi meta) which is BABYMETAL. It signifies a new type of heavy metal being born. BABYMETAL are obviously not like most music groups today as their primary focus isn't their recordings, but it's their live performances. Think of them as musical theatre. If you're going to react to more I would absolutely suggest always checking out live shows as they are one of the few bands these days who are MUCH better live! This is an older video where the girls played with the miming "Babybones" band in the background. Since this video they've always been backed by the legendary Kami Band which is made up of absolutely masterful metal musicians.
Here are my recommendations for more. They are all live audio and I would recommend this order:
"Ijime, Dame, Zettai" Live Sonisphere 2014 UK - czcams.com/video/Ro-_cbfdrYE/video.html - This was the last song of their first big show in the west. They booked a smaller side stage but were bumped up to the main stage and the girls were terrified how the UK metal heads would react to them.
"Rondo of Nightmare" with Mischiefs of the Metal Gods Intro Budokan Black Night - czcams.com/video/QxYAcIyk2Co/video.html - This is a Su-Metal (lead singer) solo but it really shows off the Kami Band.
"Road of Resistance" Live in Japan - czcams.com/video/zTEYUFgLveY/video.html - This is how BABYMETAL ends an arena show. If you're only going to pick one of these to react to, this would be the one.
They just released their third album "Metal Galaxy" this month and I saw them during their US tour for the first time last month! They were flawless and I can't wait to see them again! They're doing a whole european tour early next year including 4 shows in the UK (I'm assuming that's where you are based on your accent). If you like what you see, maybe check them out live!

Thanks for choosing to react to BABYMETAL, they're amazing! As someone who is new to the group, I thought I'd give you and your followers a little background on them.
BABYMETAL is a Japanese Kawaii Metal group consisting of (for the most part) SU-METAL on lead vocals, YUIMETAL and MOAMETAL on backing vocals/dancing, or "SCREAM AND DANCE" as they like to call it. I say 'for the most part' as Yui & Moa have a few songs that they do as duets without Su and Su has a few songs she does as solos whilst Yui & Moa take a well deserved break.
They were formed in 2010 as part of the idol group Sakura Gakuin, before touring on their own in 2011 and have gone from strength to strength.
They started singing to backing tracks with actors in skeleton suits pretending to play instruments (known as BABYBONES) but soon incorporated the Kami Band into their concerts, bringing them in full time at the end of 2013. The Kami Band consists of some of Japan's premier musicians on rotation based on availability. The most popular configuration consisting of Takayoshi Ohmura and Mikio Fujioka on guitar with Leda Cygnus as stand-in, BOH on bass and Aoyama Hideki on drums. These are the people you will see most often in videos. Since the untimely passing of Mikio at the end of 2017 they have enlisted the talents of Isao Fujita on guitar. At the end of 2018 YUIMETAL left the band because of health problems and in 2019 there are 3 girls named AVENGERS that will take her place in a rotating manner.
Below is a list of some of their best performances that I hope you will consider for future reactions. Should you decide to do more BABYMETAL reactions in the future, you should be aware that CZcams will block almost all videos that incorporate audio. The best way round this is to mute the video and provide a link that we can open in a new window and sync with yours. Just give us a countdown before you start playing it. The BABYMETAL fandom is very used to this way of doing things.

They keep up that pace the whole show. It's really amazing and you should check them out. The 'Pa Pa Pa - 2 2 Late" part is mixed. There are a couple spots in the concert, this is the main one, where they do that. It's not consequential stuff, but I think they do it so Su-metal, the lead, can maintain her breath with all the bouncing around. She is incredibly versatile live.
They were 16 and 14 when this was filmed in 2013, and are 21 and 20 now. You should check out Pa Pa Ya to see where they are now, or Shanti Shanti Shanti to get some idea of Su's range

I had the same reaction when I first heard this song and saw the video. I avoided watching it for about 2 weeks when it first came out until I saw everyone sharing it so I figured it was worth a watch. Saw them live 3 times after that lol.

This is my favorite song of theirs. Saw them in Paris in 2014; the two small ones were 15 and almost 15 (like a matter of days. The older soloist gave each one the Mike to sing a solo part on their birthday, one in Paris and one in Germany which was too far for me as I'd taken a bus😁. It was very sweet!); the oldest was 17.

Ah! Welcome to the BabyMetal foxhole. It goes deeper than you can possibly imagine. :)
BabyMetal is a very serious band. Very serious, indeed. Chocolate is a serious topic. I used to spend hours in agony and contemplation trying to decide whether to eat chocolate or abstain from indulging. BabyMetal have solved my dilemma. Now I just listen to this song instead and get same sugary-chocolaty bitter-sweet burst of energy as I would if I ate chocolate.
    Always more BabyMetal forever! :)

Great reaction.. you have to watch all the videos then you see that they are a band of great talent with an incredible live show.. I may be a little older than you and I'm also a life long rock musician.. and Baby metal has become my favorite new group of the century.. most original band sense Kansas came out in the 70s..

What you just watched was BABYMETAL, back then, the audio for their performances were pre-recorded (members in band were actors playing a role) but the vocals were live. The 2 back-up singers sing in perfect harmony to eachother (sadly, Yui has left the band so Moa sings by herself now) and the lead singer as you heard has a quality in her voice that sounds like she is singing harmony to herself (which may be a mixing board "trick") on that song anyways...

Nice reaction, glad to see you're liking it! And there's a lot in store for you :) This MV actually has a studio version as audio, and the footage is from their late 2013 show for Su-metal (lead singer)'s 16th birthday celebration. Here's the real live recording of it to compare: czcams.com/video/E-Pb2x7sva8/video.html. Still at this show it was performed with a backtrack used for pretty everything except most of the girls' vocals. As for a real live performance I also back up the suggestion for _Road of Resistance (Live in Japan)_ as the next one (it's from early 2015 with Suzuka being 17 and two younger girls -- 15.5 yo): czcams.com/video/zTEYUFgLveY/video.html.
P.S. It's a clash of Metal and *J-Pop* , not K-Pop as you mentioned in the description. And yes, they are quite different (though I'm not into any of them).
