      To be fair, they did some really messed up stuff during the war too. Look up Unit 731. Human Experimentation to mostly innocent Chinese people. Japan took over a small area in China and set up the facility.
      They had a plan to release super plague fleas and rats into the USA, but were nuked five weeks before the plan would have been enacted.
      Instead, they released the rats and fleas there before destroying the facility.

    For the most part the metal community has embraced these girls. Despite the gimmicky cute pop aspect of Babymetal the music is great and the girls are talented as hell. Plus they're doing what only the best most original metal bands manage to pull off. They are saying "Screw your expectations. We're gonna do our own thing and we're gonna kill it." In the end that is what metal is all about.

    • @amberhoward7807
      @amberhoward7807 Před 5 lety +5

      Technically it's not their own thing though... It's still very K-Pop, which is already very mainstream... I mean I guess the aspect of the "metal" being played along side it makes it different, but to me it's just 2 aspects mushed together.

    I am a life long hard core metal head, and my first reaction upon seeing and hearing this a couple years ago was exactly the same..WTF? However, these lil girls are straight up LEGIT! They are the hardest working girls you can find. This band tours non stop, interviews non stop, makes videos non stop, and makes albums non stop. They are literally grinding their way to the top, and ALL the metal bands with a name..even ones you would never expect give these girls props and support what they do. Slayer, Rob Zombie, and many others back them 100%. They play huge metal festivals with some bands that scare the hell out of a lot of folks, and everyone has their back. Rob Halford of Judas priest even did Painkiller and Breaking the Law in a performance with these girls. My wtf reaction was the same as yours, but they kind of grow on you in a weird catchy way. This band and these kids work their asses off and deserve the respect of the metal community for that alone. Not only that, they have created a sound and a 'genre' of metal uniquely their own, groundbreaking, something never really done in metal before, and have injected something new and refreshing to metal the way Chuck Schuldiner did with Death and Death metal. They are actually revolutionaries, and should be respected for that too.

    They are the real deal and are fast climbing the ladder in the metal world. To this point they have been support for bands like Metallica, Gun & Roses, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Korn. Not real? Do you really want to have the discussion of real vs fake in metal? Metal is flush with gimmicks and flat out bullshit. We can start with most black metal bands. How about Ghost? Music is marketed entertainment. Some is better executed and funded than others but make no mistake, it is planned and marketed entertainment.

    • @X1xone
      @X1xone Před 6 lety +7

      @flamingbeast You can deny that they are "real" metal and think they suck, but the fact is they are steadily climbing the ladder on the bill at metal music festivals. Gimme Chocolate does not really represent the sound of the their music. You can probably better judge what they sound like today by checking this song out from the Download festival czcams.com/video/qXF94RGYEmw/video.html

    Lead Singer: Suzuka Nakamoto aka Su-Metal age 20
    Choirs/ Dancer: Yui Mizuno aka Yui-Metal (Right gloved) age 18
    Choirs/ Dancer: Moa Kikuchi aka Moa-Metal (left gloved) age 18
    Started Babymetal at age 13/11 respectfully. They started out as a Sub-unit in a developmental Idol group called Sakura Gakuin. Their raise in popularity had them break away officially in 2013. The live backing band is known as the Kami Band, they played off and on from 2012-2013, and they were not fully established in Babymetal until 2014. Age during this video of Gimme Chocolate, Su-Metal 16, Yui and Moa 14. This is one of their performances that DOESN'T have the Kami-Band. The Skeleton Band, mock play behind the girls, they were removed from Babymetal in 2013.
    There are four sides to their performances, group songs, they also have songs dedicated to Suzuka which are her solos. Then there is what is known as Black Babymetal this is where Yui and Moa do duets. Lastly they have Kami Band intros and Mischief of the God's, which are pure instrumentals of the band doing solos before songs.
    They play a variety of metal styles including the one they invented known as Kawaii Metal. Their first song Doki Doki Morning (2010) is a great example of Kawaii Metal. Gimme Chocolate that is also Kawaii metal. However they have done speed metal (Road of Resistance), folk/Viking metal (Meta Taro), Ska/Punk (YAVA!), more rock style song (Syncopation), Progressive Metal (Tales of Destinies/The One), Ballads (Amore, No Rain No Rainbows), and even black metal (Sis. Anger)
    The music is written by a small army lyricists and musicians. There are to many to list. They also did a collaboration with DragonForce (Road of Resistance). Each song tell stories. Karate is about overcoming even ones own fears and doubts, Gimmie Chocolate is about body shaming. Other themes are anti bullying, coming of age, and woman empowerment. Some are just fun like playing hide and go seek with an ogre.
    Their choreography is done one of Japan's best Mikiko Mizuno she is doing the opening ceremonies for the 2020 Summer Games in Tokyo.
    I think this info will get you going in the right direction in Babymetal information. They are touring in the US coming up in May, might be hard to get tickets this late in the game. Kansas City isn't sold out yet.
    I strongly suggest you stick to their live shows with future reactions, they are the strongest Live. The Karate Music Video, is their best one, and worth checking out however. If anything I would STRONGLY recommend Road of Resistance Live in Japan. Japanese Copyright laws are weird, and Amuse Inc, the company that owns Babymetal, take them to the extreme. Videos you will not get slapped with Copyright strikes by them are; Karate Music Video, Road of Resistance Live in Japan, Ijime, Dame, Zettai Soniphere 2014, sometimes Mischief of the God's/ Rondo of Nightmares. Everything else it's the Mute and Sync method sorry.

    Nice one. The classic Babymetal reaction running order most people experience: - song 1 "WTF is this, it shouldn't work, do I like it?"; song 2 "I think this is actually really good but I'm still not sure, maybe I'll try another."; song 3 "This is brilliant, I'm hooked give me another song I need more!" Their music videos are good, live performances are even better - they feed off the audience energy and multiply that energy in their performance. Road of Resistance live in Japan would be a good one for your next reaction, I think you would enjoy Catch Me If You Can - the best metal song about playing hide & seek ever written.

  • @pichejf
    @pichejf Před 6 lety +92

    First, let me apologize in advance for the deluge of comments you are about to get on this video. BM fans tend to be a bit rabid and jump on any reaction video with the band name in it.
    Second, even though this is their most watched video, it's also one of the videos I tend to tell people to avoid when first being introduced to the band. First, this and Doki Doki Morning are some of their more "pop-y" songs. Second, they still had a fake backing band called the BabyBones with them on stage (those guys in bad skeleton costumes) that faked playing the instruments.
    Nowadays, they are backed by some of the greatest musicians Japan has to offer called the Kami band, which translates loosely to the "band of gods". Most of the backing band truly deserves that nickname. BOH, the bassist, is one of the best 6 string bass players in the world and Aoyama Hideki, the drummer, has better timing than a metronome.
    Each song by Babymetal explores a different subgenre of metal.
    Time for the recommendation! I'll jump on the bandwagon and say Road of Resistance live in japan like a few of the other commenters and Akatsuki, live unfinished version if you want to really hear the range that the main singer, Suzuka Nakamoto aka Su-Metal can have. She was only 16 during the video you just watched (and in Akatsuki unfinished) but that song brings a tear to my eyes everytime, and I'm a 37 year old metalhead

    • @robharwood3538
      @robharwood3538 Před 6 lety +2

      While I agree Gimme Choco is not most fans' favourite, and *perhaps* for that reason it might be avoided as a first recommendation, but in my humble opinion, it has the most WTFness x Awesomeness combo of all their songs, and is still absolutely my favourite, although I realize many other songs are 'technically' better in various ways. For sheer reaction-worthiness, Gimme Choco remains my number one recommendation. I've never experienced such a mind-blowing reaction like I did from Gimme Choco ever before or since.
      And that includes Nippon Manju by Ladybaby (much more WTF, but significantly less awesome (but still a bit awesome)) and Road of Resistance (awesomer but less weird), and even IINE (both weird and awesome, but slightly less than GC on both variables) and Tales of the Destinies (also both awesome and weird, but not all at once in your face like GC).
      The only other band I'm into at this moment which compares to that special GC combo, IMO, is Desu.Rabbits. They have quite a few songs that are both awesome and weird (and also funny, too, which is something a little unique that Babymetal doesn't really go into), but hmm, I think Gimme Choco still takes the cake. Just my opinion!

      I’m a 45 year old metalhead and learned about them just last week and have not stopped listening to them ever since. My 3 year old son is obsessed with the Karate song and video lol. It’s very hard to pinpoint what makes this weird concoction of music work so well, but for me it’s almost like an Aha! Moment and it feels like waking up on a spring morning with the windows open. Refreshing. Alive. Love it. So very sad about their amazing guitarist Mikio dying in 2018. Also, Yui leaving the group. Not sure if they’ll recover from that plus the girls are getting older and the new songs they’ve released are more serious now...not sure it’s still working.

    Simply put, its Kawaii Metal- their own creation. They began this metal journey back in 2010 when they were first introduced to and began absorbing what is “metalness”. They ARE different, they ARE counter culture- they fly in the face of metal purists and traditional metal. They needed a good shaking anyway! So they were 11, 11 & 13 when they first began Babymetal and now are 18, 18 & 20. Not a flash in the pan! I suggest their Karate MV next. It’s so damn good! Badass storytelling w/o even having to know Japanese!

    Well, I would say this is metal with little girls, the idol part is very limited. And the idol part won't last long term, while Babymetal will continue. So idol is just their origin. Not what they are doing now. They are just cute/adorable girls with metal music. They even call it kawaii metal. Kawaii is the Japanese cute culture.
    Babymetal is kind of counter-culture within the metal genre. :-)
    This song is kind of their WTF song. :-) There are more songs like that, but their songs are actually very diverse. You should check out Ijime Dame Zettai at Sonisphere, UK 2014. It's also a song from their first album. From that performance you can see it's even the western metal fans that can like Babymetal.

    This band is mixing gender of music like crazy. No rules apply to BABYMETAL. Your first reaction about them is pretty normal as you have probably never heard something like this. But don't be wrong, each ones of their song will surprise you more and more. There are totally unique and this is probably why fans are so addicted to them and deeply love them. You jusdt scracth the surface of this band, you have so much to discover yet. As it is often said, they really shine in live (this one was live footage other studio sound) , but the MV are good too. my recommandations for the next to react are these:
    For a more intense and strong live performance : czcams.com/video/zTEYUFgLveY/video.html (Road of resistance Live in Japan Official)
    If you like the "weird" side if "Gimme Choco", and want more this kind of mix of pop and metal: czcams.com/video/VKMd0IFQdAA/video.html (Doki Doki morning Live at budokan) or the MV (czcams.com/video/4QbAXXXOJF8/video.html) (The live is far better imo)
    For a solid song more recent and mature: czcams.com/video/qXF94RGYEmw/video.html (Karate Live at Download UK Festival) or the MV (czcams.com/video/GvD3CHA48pA/video.html)

    This is just a few of the reasons why I still watch the channel (the main two reasons are your genuine excitement to hear new music and your want to expand your musical horizons). Another suggestion for your content:
    Feel free to suggest hip hop songs with a good message and clean lyrical/musical content. I’m not a fan of that genre and most rap because the message is too superficial and boorish, but I’m willing to listen to some suggestions from a person that genuinely seems to enjoy music.
    Keep up the great work and well done on your continuing success! Be wary of burning out. Make sure to stay healthy and happy. Peace out brother man.

    Some info you might find interesting on this song:
    Babymetal are probably the most famous example of a growing movement in Japanese pop music known as Anti-Idol, in which the traditional Idol Group format is subverted/parodied through eccentric fusions of sound and visual style. Some of the earliest Anti-Idol groups such as BiS and Momoiro Clover Z took visual cues from science fiction, Japanese horror and Super Sentai (that's Power Rangers to the rest of the world), and musical cues from hardcore techno and symphonic rock/metal. Since then, more and more Anti-Idol groups have formed, and a fair few of them have taken cues from various metal styles. This includes Babymetal's dabbling in speed metal, power metal and nu-metal (an overall style which they refer to as "Kawaii Metal" or "cute metal"), Necronomidol's fusion of J-pop with folk metal and black metal, and FruitPochette's metalcore/djent inspired sound.
