  • Today we begin the carbon fiber process on the Datsun front clip. Tim goes over in detail what he has done to the hood already and some tips and advice on how to lay the carbon fiber the correct way.
    We also begin some slight work on the lexus ls400. Still waiting for more additional parts to come in before we go all out on it. So if youre interested in that build just know it is coming soon!

    making carbon fiber hood and skinning a hood with carbon are 2 different things... apple and oranges

      I agree. If the objective is making the car lighter, skinning with carbon fiber actually makes the car heavier. Skinning for aesthetics makes sense though.

    That was nail-biting to watch the laying of the fiber. I know how hard it is to lay the fiber just right, without distortions. Had 13 CF hoods made a few years ago and was there for some of the lay ups. You guys have the perfect set up. Anybody would love to part of a car collective like this. Looking forward to the Q&A vid. Once again, wish you all the best. Oh, and my favorite word of the video: TURBO... in the future.

    • @mlinecomposites1
      @mlinecomposites1 Před 6 lety

      crispycris in my professional opinion it wouldn’t be so hard laying the carbon right if it was made out of a mold then infused. The carbon would be dry laying it in the mold and you could take your time. In the end, of course their are two ways of doing it, this just seems to be the hardest. A lot of people don’t like making molds but if any of those panels ever get messed up you could always make another part from the mold, just sayin.

    I was under the impression that you need to make a mold of a body panel to make it into carbon fiber. If you just lay the carbon on top of the stock hood wont it be slightly larger and not fit right ? Or is it such a minute size increase that it doesn't matter ? Great content man !

  • @1dickycat
    @1dickycat Před 6 lety

    I can only imagine the mess the resin was leaving since they where using it so "sparingly" 😂😂 So, since that didn't go as planned, what's the order of operations now? Super77,carbon,resin, repeat x3? Also, was the welded front end on the car when it was driving? Or was it welding and prepped just for the carbon? (BTW, you know since its going carbon you now HAVE to weigh it to find out actual weight savings 😂) One other thing, is he gonna do some inner fenders for the bay out of carbon or just leave it all open?

    • @timhicks2807
      @timhicks2807 Před 6 lety +1

      Yes that is the correct order now. The welded front end was welded together on the car to assure correct fitment but would not work if it was still bolted down so it was just made to build this piece off of. We are definitely going to have to compare weights, and yes we are building inner fenders as well to keep rocks etc away from the expensive bits hahah.
