CAN WE USE FEED CORN TO PLANT A CORN FOOD PLOT FOR DEER HUNTING?

  • In this video I go over whether or not we can use feed corn that is widely available to plant your corn food plot. Corn seed is very expensive and not widely available in non ag areas, thus many food plotters turn to feed corn to use as seeds to plant corn food plots with. Picking a well suited hybrid seed corn for your location is the first decision that must be made, and it's likely one of the most important decisions. Corn seed has many different herbicide traits, maturities, as well as different conditions that each individual hybrid performs best in, some are great at growing in drought conditions, others preform well in wet soils in river bottoms. Matching these traits to your farm is extremely important and will ultimately lead to a much more successful food plot, yielding more and thus giving the whitetails more food for a longer period of time.

    I planted 115 day corn in Northern NY. It grew amazing last year. If we are growing it for deer food and cover we don't care about how many bushels per acre we get. Now I have a weed problem with round up ready corn. I want corn that can be killed by round up. Which my local crop center says exists but it unavailable. I'm planting 90 day corn this year as it's the cheapest but it's still 269 a bag

      You can get non roundup ready corn to use in food plots. It takes a different chemical program but it’s definitely doable. Thanks for watching

      @DIYfoodplotpro Thanks yes I know about the other corn but it's not available at my crop center and they can't get any.. So maybe next year. Thanks

    The popular thing to do in Michigan is to frost seed your corn around November 15th

    Great video Wes. Great info. Is there any websites that you can recommend for just us food plot guys to buy good corn and soybean seed?

      If you have a local coop or true farm store around you or close to you they are a great resource. If not I’ve planted Dekalb, becks, stine, I’ve planted all of them with good results and they will have all the diffrent maturities for across the U.S.

    We need drought tolerant seed to grow in southern sandy soil. If you don’t have a pivot in E central GA, good luck growing corn.

      Jason there is some corn hybrids out there that are incredibly efficient at growing through droughty conditions. Obviously they still need some water. Most of the time they won’t make as much as other varieties but they are bred to fight off and resist a drought. Also dropping plant populations back significantly can also help very much in fighting a drought off. A corn planted at 30,000 seeds an acre isn’t going to hold up nearly as well as a corn planted at 18000 seeds per acre. Thanks for watching and commenting

    Great video. My bag of corn seed arrived today. 112 day, 3 or 4 acre bag, 80,000 kernels I think. Nutricrave corn made by Realworld. Can't wait to see how it does. Not roundup ready. Planting in midlands of South Carolina.

      Thinking about Atrizine for pre and if needed (probably will be needed) 24D over the top of standing corn for a post

      it would be better to save the atrazine for post app. if you feel you need two passes. 2,4d shouldn't be used on corn over 4". i'm assuming you have a pesticide license considering the products your using. get a generic dual (group 15) to add in your tank to control grasses, i use metal 11, it works well and they can all be mixed together and applied before the corn reaches 4".

      Clancy, without researching it I’m not sure. I would suspect y’all have a much shorter growing season, and I suspect you would need a fast maturing corn. This is pure speculation, as you should look into this, but I’m guessing a 75-80 day corn. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    So you’re saying I could purchase a bag of hybrid Roundup Ready corn seed for my area and conditions, plant it, grow it, and then if I would save a bunch of ears, I could plant those seeds and they will grow again the next year? ( not that I would do that, I would DEFINITELY purchase new seeds every year) ?

    • @DIYfoodplotpro
      @DIYfoodplotpro  Před 5 měsíci

      Oxford, I’m telling you to buy the hybrid seed corn yearly, that’s the only way to achieve good results every year. Don’t save the seed and try to plant it, you might save a few dollars in the front end but it’s not going to end well. Thanks for watching and commenting

      Good video. You could also mention the unknown germination of the open pollinated seed and the plant ability of it vs. commercial plated seed. Then there’s the missing seed treatment to protect the seed from rotting before it germinates. New seed is expensive but unused seed will generally carry over to the next season if stored in a cool dry area. It’s real important to know what you’re getting so you don’t invest herbicide, fertilizer. and valuable time in something that doesn’t grow.

      you are 100% correct sir! All the reasons you listed at additional reasons not to use feed corn to plant with. I only plant fresh bags of corn each year because I’m not going to take a chance on getting a partial stand then fighting weeds/grasses all year but your correct, if stored properly the seed should see be good to go the following year. I would recommend performing a germ test on that leftover seed corn to see what the rate is. Even when stored properly you can potentially still lose germination percentage. Thanks for watching and commenting and I appreciate you sharing the insight!

      If you did that and Monsanto somehow caught wind of it, you would likely end up penniless.

    Seems like when I've planted leftover deer corn it's more like volunteer corn. Some of it will come up and grow but never seems to do much. Similar to planting sunflower birdseed...some sunflowers will come up and grow but same crappy results. I'm just too thrifty (cheap) to pay those big dollars for the good stuff, and I'm sure even Professor Plot doesn't have a solution for that problem?? smh/lol

      @DIYfoodplotpro  Před 5 měsíci

      Hahaha no sir unfortunately unless you want to move away from roundup ready corn, you have few options. Yes sir, that’s exactly what happens, it’s essentially volunteer corn and never does very good. Thanks for watching and commenting
