It's a strange Intamin coaster, but I think they nailed what Disney wanted. Not too extreme, but not too tame, just enough that anyone in the family is able to enjoy :) So props to Intamin and Disney for making a pretty awesome ride. It's strange that Disney would work with someone like Intamin, but I think it was a good relationship.
Tony Kim exactly. Its perfect for what its supposed to be
It indeed is
Fact: After the accident on the final brake run, Intamin said they no longer claim it as one of theirs due to the significant changes and customizations Disney made to it after being turned over to the park.
LOL well like the majority of the track is theirs, so it's still an Intamin really :D But hey whatever they said
Just grateful of this is NOT VEKOMA
To clarify about the theme ( as a Disneyland enthusiast), it's the ride is supposed to imitate a 'classic' boardwalk wooden coaster. That would explain the huge amount of cross shaped supports, which is something you would see on a wooden roller coaster.
Also, fyi, the tube things on the hills aren't actually for decoration (although they do serve that purpose). They're supposed to block the screams as there are residential areas just south of the park.
Great video regardless!
Nowadays they could do it even better with RMC hybrids
The name "California Screamin" is a reference to a song California Dreamin.
Willjomosh ~yeah, we got it. 😀
Zombie Hunter
Yes, three fold meaning: the song, the park name, and the fact that you are supposed to scream.
I can't believe I didn't realize that 🤦♀️
Waiting for the X(treme) rated version called Californicoaster
and you can race all over paradise pier at super speed
3:24 How to fix the airtime: Just lift your butt up and down on the high points of the hills. Easy DIY airtime.
LMAO I LOVE YOU
This was my first coaster with an inversion. Anyone else?

IT'S A ME
I wish Six Flags took a hint from Disney. Disney designs all of their rides to move people, and they often run max capacity. There's so many break runs because of all the trains. Space Mountain for example can have 10 trains running at the same time!
Then you go to Knotts or Magic Mountain and you're lucky if a ride is running 2 trains.
Steven Schiro only 4 people can be on a train at a time on SM
MCBR's are only a bad thing when they slow the train down every time. When they don't have to for safety reasons, the trains on Disney's coasters just fly right through them.
? SM at Disneyland is 2x3x2 (2 per row, 3 rows per car, 2 cars per train), for a capacity of 12 per train.
yes.
tl/dr: You need somewhere for all the cars to "stop" in an emergency without hitting each other. You can't have 5 trains and 2 braking sections because the ones that can't stop will crash into ones that have.
...
You need someway to stop trains from colliding if there is a malfunction or if operations are slow. For example, look at this video of California Screamin' (czcams.com/video/Ha252t9LLxM/video.html) where there was something on the tracks which caused the train slow down and stop midway through the ride. Since you have multiple cars on the track at one time, you need to be able to stop the ones behind it from crashing into the broken one.
The more trains you want to run, the more braking sections you need, because you need each train to pass its braking section before the train behind it can pass theirs. Suppose you send 2 cars, A then B, and have 2 brakes, 1 then 2. When car B gets to braking section 1, the computer will check to make sure that the car in front of that, car A, has cleared the next braking section, section 2. If car B gets to section 1 and car A has not cleared section 2, section 1 will stop car B. In practice, like in space mountain, every car will stop at the next section.

The operations on this ride are legendary. Probably the best ever. Tho I was impressed with Raging Bull
Chris Brunelle forreal, went to Disney about a month ago and the line moves really quick with 30 second dispatches
Space Mountain Dispatches are insaine, they are about 30 seconds and only 1 loading area, Screamin' has a little more time due to duo loading
Jakob Ogan I wasn't able to go on space mountain when I was at disney, but damn that sounds great
you say when the ride brakes down once a day.
it is. the last time i didn't get to ether
I think the OTSRs are there for two reasons.
1. The layout is custom but the trains aren't. They are off the shelf intamin and can be found on other intamin looping coasters built around that era (early 00s). Nowadays intamin uses lapbars for inversions.
2. It may be a capacity and dispatch time issue. DCA needs to load riders as fast as they can with the most efficient restraints. Lapbars on looping coasters usually have a seatbelt as a backup (like RMC) or guests need to be really stapled on them like premier skyrockets (no seatbelts) and attendants lower the restrains for you. This bulky OTSR restraint is easier to lower by guests themselves very quickly with no seatbelt to slow down the dispatch time.
I have a soft spot for this ride because it’s the first big looping rollercoaster I ever rode. You just kind of have to go into it knowing that it’s a Disney coaster, so it’s not gonna be the most thrilling coaster you’ve ever rode. But it’s great for what it is. It’s incredibly smooth, the on-ride audio is makes the experience very Disney-esque, and it’s just an overall fun ride. You’ll probably come off laughing and wanting to ride again. Brings back great memories 💕
It’s California AAAAHHHHH. Now Incredicoater.
I absolutely love this coaster. I’m 25 now and I loved riding it when my family went to Disneyland as a kid.
this ride will always be one of my favorites
the airtime is rare and you have to give yourself a little more wiggle room if you want it
the onboard audio is one of the best parts of the ride(i have the music on my computer)
Ive actually gotten a good amount of airtime at the top of the first hill and at the series of "airtime hills". Depends where you sit. I found the front to have good ejector airtime for a split second at the first hill and a good amount of air during the bunny hills in the back. Any other seats besides the first and last two rows are pretty forecelss.
I don’t like that they’re retheming it. It takes away the charm of the ride.
Luke Minosky I would have to agree, but it’s not completely taking away from it, the main frame will still be white but some area like the top of The Hill and lift hill with be enclosed
I completely agree. The great thing about it is it’s not overly themed like most Disney rides
Agreed!!!
California Screamin' is ruined.
Luke Minosky I completely agree with this
I clicked on this so hard my phone screen cracked.
It's genius it's a coaster themed to a coaster!
I love the aesthetic. It looks like what the GP think of when they think “roller coaster”, but is still enjoyable
In the early years when it first opened there was no countdown, they just told you heads back. I think there may have been a few necks getting tweaked so they added the countdown. It is a good ride.
Do Expedition Everest !!
AMagicProduction I will, eventually
Good review! The countdown used to be voiced by Dee Bradley Baker before it got changed to Neil Patrick Harris in 2010.
Zombie Hunter Yeah. I kinda prefer it over Harris' countdown voiceover.
It is nice that they have a couple audio options with Harris, but I liked the Baker audio more than any single audio now. Collectively, the new audio on the launch is an upgrade, but Baker's is still classic.
BryceFourn 2001 same here!
Rode this in 2014...it was quite a fun experience, that's for sure.
as a kid this was actually my first big ride
This was my first coaster with an inversion! It played a huge part in my entry into the coaster community along with Medusa at SFDK. Love this review! :)
Those hills towards the end originally gave awesome moments of airtime. You'd float up into your over the shoulder restraint. That was before they started trimming before it.
My tip is to hold your arms out during those hills, and they’ll lift up. It’s fun.
That onboard music is iconic and I will always remember it.
California Screamin' is my favorite Roller Coaster ride! 💙
The audio I got on the ride (I believe it was the purple train) spazzed out on the ride! When we were going up the tallest hill it glitched and then reset to the beginning so it took away from the ride. But then I rode it again and I thought it was great. My favorite seat was definitely front because there is no airtime.
No, it's themed to classic wooden coasters from old piers. California Screamin is a reference to California dreamin.
Hello Taylor, great review. Now I've never been out to California... but being a huge Disney fan I know a little history of California Screamin. California Screamin opened with the park in 2001. Disney Imagineer designed the coaster to look like a wooden coaster on a pier. That is why it is the way it looks. You nailed it when you explained how the ride looks.
That’s what makes Disney coasters so great. They have 5 trains operating all at once while parks like Six Flags only have 1 or 2.
The first time I rode this coaster I was so nervous because it was my first coaster to go upside down and now I'm a coaster savvy!😃
SAME
As an Enthusiast, I've noticed that a handful of other coaster fans have said Disney parks are always unthrilling, childish and boring. With that said, it was really awesome to hear a positive review of this attraction, proving that status quo isn't always true. As an avid Disney park fan, I enjoyed hearing your thoughts on this coaster as it's been a favorite over the years. Great video Taylor, and keep up the awesome work!
This was my childhood coaster right here. The thing I will miss most is the music and the trains. I think they looked good with the ride. Space Mountain also has pretty good on board audio.
My favorite Disney coaster!
I personally love the loop in the back very forceful and the music and drops are so nice especially in the back seat it's so great to marathon
My first looping coaster is when I was 7, I went on great white @ SWSA. A batman b&m invert
This ride was never on my radar but it looks pretty cool
I think the reason there isn’t that much theming was that they wanted it to be like an old school woodie in terms of theme. That would also explain the strange support structure.
I rode it 21 times in two days it’s the best ride ever I’m a coaster junkie this is my favorite
If you’re a little kid you get to feel the airtime, which is why it is a childhood favorite with most people who have ridden it a lot.
Lol! "First big coaster" When i hit the 54 inch mark my first 54 inch ride was Hypersonic XLC! XD
The height req for this is 48’
Damn lol hypersonic? That ride had the launch from hell. Wish KD still had it or something similar.
1:40 that Girl, looking at her mobile phone during the launch
I WAS WAITING FOR THIS. THANK YOU TAYLOR. YAAAAAAS
This was my first big roller coaster and still has a soft spot for me. I really wish I can get back to California's Adventure to marathon it.
I loved this ride, mostly because the music made it so enjoyable when it synced with the ride.
This was my first big coaster and I absolutely love it
Thank you for giving it an 8! That's not what I thought you give at all. This is a lot of fun for me personally to ride.
I actually get a good amount of air time on the drops and Disneyland is my home park and this is my favorite ride there it honestly beats all of the family rides
I literally went on this coaster the day this was posted -- But I did get airtime on those bunny hills so... I don't know what happened there.
I was at the park this weekend and got to ride in the back row. Got a decent pop of airtime on the first hill after the launch and some floater air on the bunny hills. I actually disagree with Taylor about the loop being underwhelming. I find it to be a pleasantly forceful loop. It won't cause you to grey out, but I don't think it's disappointing at all. Also, this coaster gives an amazing night ride.
I hate I missed this credit! 😭😭😭
Random fact: according to Wikipedia this is a 60 million dollar intamin. That has got to be one of the most expensive roller coasters I’ve seen.
Also, I live in California and ride this almost every year. It does provide good airtime if you sit in the BACK. And maybe cheat your harness a bit so you aren’t locked in so tight.
i dont understand how you didnt get any airtime on those bunny hills? i remember as a little lad i got mad airtime. maybe due to my weight idk
I love how the girl on the left at 1:40 is screaming and then pulls out her phone to check Instagram lmao
Should've done an operations video at Disney, they have awesome operations which is why I love Disneyland haha
The music makes it work
This is the best ride at any Disney Park in my opinion
THIS RIDE IS AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What is Disney thinking? Incredicoaster? Pixar Pier? Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout. What next? Wreck It Ralph: The Ride? Of all things to change at DCA they are killing the most iconic themes. It's bad enough that they scrapped the Maliboomer years ago. Great review. It is a great ride. Also just leave the restraint a bit loose for mild airtime, and yes sitting toward the back helps with this as well.
Building a theme park *about* California *in* California was a really stupid idea in hindsight...
Agent Ninja people said the same thing when they replaced the old train ride with thunder mountain
I miss the Maliboomer :(
My profile picture should explain my strong feelings for Maliboomer fairly well.
Heres the thing about maliboomer: You can ride the EXACT same thing 20 minutes down the road at Knotts Berry Farm. I understand this also applies with the swings but those have some tiny sliver aspect of theming while the maliboomer was just a drop ride, and they tore it down due to the negative feedback the park had upon opening.
I was at Disney a few weeks ago and the operations for this coaster are insane. 35 second dispatches !
Hulk was my first big boi coaster
Nice! Mine was Batman The Ride at Six Flags Over Texas
the theming is for this ride is an old bordwalk wooden roller coaster.
(i now i spelled a few things wrong. don't comment on that) 4:30
Take off the shoulder restraints for some lap bars and its a winner for everyone
This is the coaster that started my obsession
Cheetah hunt was my first upside down ride when I was 7
This is one of my personal favorites (mostly because its my first credit). I really want to go back to Disneyland soon, but the crowds get insane this time of the year.
Seems fun, like the on ride audio part, never ride it though
I remember the first time I rode this I was terrified and I was seven but then I rode it and it became my favorite coaster of all time
Now I haven't ridden this ride but I'll agree with your way of looking at this ride because honestly I could use that to describe a lot of rides back home in Europe
4:00 thanks for the shout-out bro
this was my first looping coaster and first coaster over 100 feet.
Hey Coaster Studios have you ever tried this one as incredicoaster on a good day? I have ridden this as Screamin enough times that I think I know the ride pretty well even if that was years ago, because I felt the same sensations as you did on it. When I road Incredicoaster, it felt noticably faster! It had actual floater airtime that wasn't there before, and the launch felt faster and more powerful. If you haven't experienced it like this, I would recommend you try it again. 👍🏻
This is an outrage, and I hate to sound like a mad feminist but they're taking the classic name and changing it to a product placement for incredible's two.
The loop used to be a lot more forceful and you used to get a noticeable amount of air time on those hills. But then they slowed those parts of the ride down ever since they had a really bad accident caused by a block brake failure in 2005.
BlueDragon992 this is true. I remember riding this around 2003 and the loop was very very forceful (at least for a Disney ride). It took me by surprise. And those hills at the end did have airtime as you flew through them.
My first rollercoaster with an inversion was the Sky Rocket at my home park Kennywood.
My first ever looping coaster was rock n roller coaster.
i've ridden this while the onboard audio wasn't working - still a great experience! this was my first inversion and still is one of my fav rides!! i love how long it is and that it isn't too intense but not too forceless! im pretty upset about the incredicoaster thing and the whole retheming of basically the entire park - but i can't do anything about it :(
It’s actually themed to the OG theming of that area. A bright and colorful boardwalk “wooden” coaster. The theming then changed to be a Victorian style boardwalk. If you see photos of some of the original stylings of the park I think you will find the theme fits much better. Sorry you didn’t get much air! That first hill after the launch terrifies me every time because I come up so much out of the seat. Also agree with you about onboard audio. It really goes with the movement of the coaster and track (similar to Space Mountain).
Can you please do a coaster battle... Phobia Phear at lakecompounce vs. Tempesto at Busch Gardens Williamsburg?
They can run a maximum of 5 trains at a time, you are correct.
My first big ride was Twisted Colossus this summer of 2017 the last day of summer before school I'm 11 also
Dude this was my first coaster with an inversion
This is the one ride I didn’t go on at Disney when I was young because I started to get heat stroke. I regret that decision.
My first big boi coaster was a vekoma boomerang
How to get airtime on Incredicoaster, leave the restraint a click away from totally stapled, then push yourself up on all the hills. And ask for the vey back.
Been waiting for this review ever since Flying Turns was announced
Fantastic coaster, longest coaster with an inversion!
Great video Taylor!
This ride works because of the music. Without the music it’s nothing.
It’s still great without the music...
GabesDaBomb yeah I shouldn’t have said it’s “nothing” without it because that’s not true. But the music is super nostalgic and I’m mad they changed it to the incredicoaster.
I rode on this before DCA opened to the public in year 2000
Now i want to see a review of rock n roller coaster even more
I agree that it looks bad on POVs but it actually feels pretty dang fast when your on it
I too enjoyed California AAAAH
First Launch Coaster!
This ain’t a Skyrush ride. This is a family coaster that has a launch. I think you touched on it how this is supposed start you off and be literally a first credit.
Well yeah Efteling has on-board audio on every single ride and it does at a lot to the theming and ride itself
Btw you can see Knotts Berry Farm from the top of the highest hill
Heck no, Knott's is reaaaaly far away
