Haiti's goalkeeper was very impressive...after he flapped horribly at the first Italian cross his handling and shot stopping were 1st class...
Francillon was my inspiration growing up... He inspired me to become a goal keeper.. he was simply amazing.

I agree, the goalkeeper from Haiti was sensational. 2 of the three Italian goals wasn't his fault. I can't believe a 3rd world country like Haiti knocked Mexico from going to the world cup.

Haitian goalkeeper jumped like a cat
This Italy was one of the favorites to win the World Cup, with Dino Zoff not conceding a single goal in about 9 matches (probably a world record at international level back then), and yet they didn't even advance from their group, probably because their top players like Mazzola, Rivera and Riva were at the end of their golden careers. I was surprised to see a younger looking Enzo Bearzot on Italy's bench (probably as a assistant manager). It would have been wonderful if Italy could have advanced instead of Argentina and we could have seen Italy v. Holland, and Brazil.
mistakes? Not picking, guiseppe savoldi, claudio sala for the squad and not playing sabadini at right back. Burgnich was done at this point.
Argentina were much more enterprising than this pedestrian lot.

@@gunternetzer9621 yep. Savoldi should have been called up. Riva and Rivera were a 1-2 years out of their prime. Mazzola was still very useful and in top shape, even though he was older.

Great highlights. The officiating favored Italy. In 1974, 3/4 of Africa was still colonized by Europe. There is no way they were going to let Haiti beat Europe one more time.

(2) the first free Black republic of Black African slaves on the face of the earth that has fought for and won its freedom, against the ENTIRE West (THE UNITED STATES AND ALL OF EUROPE GANGED UP AGAINST THIS SMALL, YET VALIANT COUNTRY). (3)The first "BLACK" country to enter the World Cup in the World Cup entire history. Prior to that, the world had never seen a group of Black men on that stage squaring off against a European power house. For the entire first half of the match, Haiti did not concede a goal. Mid-way into the second half, Haiti scored first. That was against the highest rated goalkeeper and defense in world. In 1974, YES, Haiti carried its flag, wore its colors with honor in the name of every Black person on the planet, whether such Black person played or like the game of soccer. Haiti was more Africa than Africa.

O goleiro do Haiti, foi escolhido um dos 4 ou 5 melhores daquela Copa. Nem sempre o artilheiro é o melhor jogador mas, se condicionou associar gols com o bem jogar. E infelizmente isso continua acontecendo, salvo uma ou outra situação. Cada pensar é único ou coincide em alguns ou vários pontos de vista. Esse aí é o meu, jogo de goleiro, tinha 12 anos na época e, no dia do jogo contra a Holanda, preferimos dar continuidade ao nosso torneio de futebol, no Engenho de Dentro. A seleção para perdeu, mas nós que jogamos, ao invés de assistir jogar, não.
Avevo 14 anni, sabato 15 giugno 1974 mi ricordo benissimo. Spogliatoio diviso da personalismi e gelosie e clan.. basta vedere il vaffa di Chinaglia a Valcareggi. Os goleiros não saem muito além da linha do gol. Ficam " colados" na linha qual num papel pega-mosca. Os goleiros argentinos e uruguaios sempre foram bons nesse fundamento. A área"é do goleiro", mas digo se que a a área "é para o goleiro".
