- I Tried a $17,000 Wheelchair and here is what I thought. I tired an Omeo, an All terrain personal mobility devise. I thought it was pretty awesome. The Omeo was amazing for people with spinal cord injuries, and the highest level of injury who uses and Omeo is a c6 complete quadriplegic. this power wheelchair can also be fab for paraplegics as well as tetraplegics.

After suffering my spinal cord injury i have really had to adapt in life. So Im showing you my disability lifestyle to raise disability awareness. As a disabled woman and a woman in a wheelchair who is paralysed, I thought it would be interesting for you to see, and hopefully give you some inspiration and motivation so that you can live more independently. wether you are paraplegic or quadriplegic I hope that I can help you. I had the chance to try one last summer here in the US. I spent about 2 hours with an Omeo representative trying various aspects of the chair. I'm in agreement with almost everything you said. They are fantastic pieces of equipment, and could be useful in certain situations. I'm not sure I would ever get used to using this thing indoors. I was also fearful of running into things, stopping, and maneuvering in tight spaces and crowds. If one could afford it, this would be a great option for just getting out in nature and doing some things traditional chairs can't. But I don't think I could ever use this as my main chair. It just seems a bit much, plus I have no way of loading it, like you

What I really do like is the ingenuity! It's really exciting to see that people are finally realizing that disabled people want to live life out loud just like anyone else.
For those hard to get into businesses, what I would like to see is a wheelchair with a lightweight, portable ramp that can be used by the ♿user. There are so many places I'd like to go to by myself but can't because of one or two little stairs.
I have to balance in it?? No thanks not for me, that would be dangerous. Looks neat though.
Self balancing... no thank lol not for me at all, and I'm not even paraplegic. It would be a damn workout for my body to make that chair do stuff. I use a power chair with a joystick for the most part anyway, with upper body, lateral supports on the sides, and so on tilting the chair back some even, and at times reclining. It is interesting to see what people come out with tho. I have to wonder if that thing is as dangerous as leaning forward with a segway for someone who stands to use those and then is leaning forward because the surface is not flat... and then they go down a steep hill... eek. How safe is that chair, I have to wonder? Also while I'm thinking about it... eh when you drive with the added part put on with the bike handle bars do you find yourself leaning into it to reach, and I say this not related to the steep hill segway problem I was thinking about but I have see people with electric or gas powered scooters where they are mounted on their wheelchair but they all see to be leaning forward... that's asinine, nice but no thanks. I think that has got to be worse when they are taking something not made to be attached to a manual wheelchair. It's a shame too as it sounded like a nice idea and I have an older manual wheelchair but the frame is all hospital wheelchair type like, but it is an older Quickie so it is slightly better but those things never seem to attach to mine as well as they want to use the different style footrest to attach sometimes. As much as my backrest is going to be higher... you're not leaning on it at all, are you?
I can't see how this chair would be even a remote possibility for people with core issues like myself. It looks beautiful, but such hard work, upper body wise.
It was a bit intense. But there i joystick mode. and the highest spinal cord injury user is c6 if thats any help :)

severe fatigue is my most disabling symptom, and there's no way i could manage all the physical movement and core control necessary to just move forwards and backwards, much less fine movement or stopping suddenly. and i didn't even consider how mentally taxing it would be, but it seems to be a big issue from how much gem talked about it.
it's really neat as a relatively compact outdoor-friendly powerchair, and i hope one day it will be easily accessible to the people who can benefit from its design.
but i'm also aware that marketing under able gaze means it gets overhyped as a miracle product without much understanding of the nuance, niches, and drawbacks most wheelchair users have to deal with when it comes to these high tech, expensive, specialized accessibility devices.
I think that is a great option for someone with good range of motion and who is outdoorsy. It does have drawbacks for those of us who don't quite have that ability It would take to control but I love that they are being creative and the wheelchair using community has options for every need
I have Athroglyposis in all four limbs, extremities and spine accompanied by no measurable manual dexterity and little upper body strength. I got my Omeo in June 2022 and it has completely changed my life! My full-time chair before my Omeo was a Permobil F3 fully articulating custom rehab power wheelchair. I had found that years of using a power wheelchair only added to my back and leg pain. After using the Omeo for just a few weeks my core strength and back pain level dropped by 90%! I would not have believed it if I had not experienced it myself. My core muscles are extremely weak, but the Omeo has strengthened them beyond my wildest imagination! My Permobil is so jealous, as I rarely use it now. With it I am able to go bicycle riding with my grandkids, navigate the beach and rough trails quite easily. Looking forward to taking the grandkids out to the snow for the first time ever! I already had a van with a lift so access was not an issue for me. I have several friends who have Omeos and do not have vehicles of their own and use the Omeo for running errands and socializing. Now that diesel is so expensive, I find I am going about 7 miles a day to run my little errands in town. I have gone to many indoor events, shopping in small storefronts and packed festivals, I have yet to run over someone! It does have a turtle mode that keeps you from going too fast, I use that for indoors. And my outdoor setting goes up to 12 mph. I have not run off the road, or injured myself. My only regret is that I didn't learn about the Omeo sooner! Granted they will not be for everyone, but for those of us who love the outdoors and people this has been a paradigm shifter for me! #OmeoKate
thank you for your review of your experience with the omeo. it's good for prospective users to know about some of the drawbacks to the chair as well as all the positives, especially for a chair that may not have nearby testers available, and likely isn't covered by insurance.

Thanks for posting this. Very interesting. I do have a Blumil, which is sort of the entry version of this type of mobility chair. I love using it but, as you say, it does need your full concentration. It can easily just catch a kerb or a bump and, whoa, you're all over the place! I have fallen out of it a few times so you definitely need to have some sort of backup assistance in mind - especially if you're paraplegic (T12) like I am.
Another thing to consider is the power source. Mine uses a Ninebot /Segway battery and I'm pretty sure these are no longer in production. When my current battery dies, I think that will be it, the chair will be useless.
Summing up, it's great when everything is going well. For the future, I'll be relying on my manual chair, plus Freewheel and Smart drive!

Thanks for the honest review Gem and sharing your insights. The problem is more importantly, usability. In general see these demos being shown by non disabled people who have magnificent upper body function and those who have a disability who can stand and walk.
If you have a more significant level of disability and rely on a powerchair around the house for everything - like myself, then this isn’t going to work. It’s great to go and explore the outdoors but you can’t even lean forward and go up a ramp which I find really peculiar. For me this would be utterly ridiculous. The emergency stop is dangerous and not realistic. They look good but aren’t practical enough. POWERCHAIR - 1 point. OMEO - nil points. I’m so glad I saw your video!

Actually in the process of applying for one after successful trial. I do live regionally, close to the beach, work as an OT across a large area including with people on property and my weekends I’m outdoors. For me it was perfect as a compliment to my manual wheelchair. However, I 100% agree that it suits certain users. Not all people will find it right.

Triggerwarning for people who are afraid of elevators
I know someone who has an Omeo. Thanks to the Omeo he can take care of his horses, who are outside in the field. It's an amazing machine. I wish I could use it, but with my conditions it's not for my body's needs.
I have a custommade wheelchair (with loopwheels urban extreme) with a custommade Lewis system backrest and the batec mini quad. So glad that I can go into the forest with this.
Recently I had an elevator accident. The elevator did not break, hit the bottomfloor and bounced back up a metre and then the emergency break kicked into action. Because of the batec there was stability and I did not fall. The batec was damaged in this accident. But the loopwheels absorbed a lot of the shock. Still I am recovering from bruises of some vertebraes, the pelvic floor and some organs. But without the loopwheels things would most likely have been so much worse.

I would never be able to afford it, but if I could it would be incredible to use! I have two dogs and love nature, and this would give me incredible freedom to go out and about, even on my own. I've organised an trial. I really appreciated your review. I struggle with pain in neck shoulders arms hands. So can't wait to see if this is better for me or wether I need a more supportive power Chair like the magic 360 another beast of a machine.
The price tag is high I agree but like you said hopefully over time it will come down.
Currently have a scooter but it's not comfortable so which watch so more of your videos for ideas of possible matches.
Hi, Thank you very much for you post on the Omeo, like you my wife uses a powered hand bike adapter (similar to a Batech or Klaxton) but the limiting issues are front wheel traction or uncomfortable ride on any thing than smooth pushbike tracks. Also as you said it will not go slowly enough when there are a lot of pedestrians around and its turning circle is also an issue at times. I would very much like to try how this Oemo would suit us for; shopping, shared walks, and social outings as we have a larger van than would accommodate its size and weight. So happy you did your review ! Next month I have an appointment to check the Genny out, a bit the same I believe. A few weeks ago I received my first powered wheelchair. What a monstrosity! It weighs more than 176 kg and is too small. I believe they gave me one for children, I have to put it in lean back position to be able to “fall” into it. My arms are completely cramped in it. Also I received it on Monday and the repair had to come on the next day Tuesday. The wheels had not been tightened… at times it does not do what it should, Theere is a position that I can lay down in it, but I have to turn the footrest up, so my legs are laying on the cold bare metal. I am freezing all the time I am in this chair ! So happy to go back to bed to warm up ! Everything I have ut on this chair nothing seems to warm it up… also new ramps will be made… hopefully soon… as I can not leave my house. The lady who delivered it tried to go over the door and got stuck. Both she and my husband were absolutely drenched when they finally got it into my house… also it has ruined my floor completely … sorry for this rant but so not happy with this Quickie Salsa m2 !!!!

Thank you for your experience, both positive and negative. One of the most important things, if not the important, is to know that whatever mobility device one is testing or using how it feels for you, not someone else. We all have different issues and problems. Though I don't need a wheelchair, I need a walker for now. Since I live in the big city, whatever I use has to be for my lifestyle, not small town USA. (I live in the States.) Too many times, I see what seems to be a commercial for the product. Nice to look at, but doesn't show me what I need to know.... And, yes, some wheelchair issues are similar to a walker, like curbs, potholes and gavel.

I tried one of these and I liked the novelty of it, buzzing around a convention centre was fun, but for day to day use, no good.

the need for good core and upper body control in this chair was the most obvious concern i had with this chair, but your comments about how mentally taxing it is to use are perhaps the most valuable commentary here, because it's not an obvious concern when you're watching other people use the chair in promotional videos.
having to constantly be conscious about the ground while moving my body in a brand new way is another very taxing process that takes up my brainpower and attention. i already have to put a lot of focus on the ground directly in front of me when using a mobility aid, and this chair ads another layer of complexity to the mental fatigue. thank you for talking about it.
also, that stopping distance is very concerning, you're right. at least with a manual or traditional power chair, i am prepared to stop immediately by gripping the rims my hands are already on, or by letting go of the stick, something i can (usually) manage when i'm fatigued. i would not be able to do that emergency stop maneuver unless i'm at peak energy levels, which is unlikely.
Amazing piece of invention! But for me really not possible. Too many pain challenges to move that much. I already have challenges with a power chair where the chairs moves - but my core does only move with the streets. The Omeo looks really great though! And I love that it’s also available for all terrain.
That must be the same technology that's in the motorized unicycles the OK Go rides in their music video for I Won't Let You Down. I've been wanting to try that tech since the music video came out!

I would love to try an Omeo. There’s no chance I could afford one though 😅 but I miss going hiking and am looking at a power chair to help with community mobility and flare ups, I love the idea of this way more than the cheapest powerchair available that my insurance still won’t cover 🙄 we’ll see.
On a similar note, I tried an Alinker walking bike as an alternative to a wheelchair for me, but found it was very tiring to use. Unfortunately I was in the hospital and missed the deadline to return it. But I’ve found it’s good for exercising safely!
My electric wheelchair is more like a carnival attraction than an ability aid. Quickie 300M. It actually breaks everything, my doors and the other day the door of my dishwasher !!! I find it very difficult to controle it has a life of its own. This week I am going to rent a Be Go. Also based on a Segway but only 60 cm wide. Besides leaning back it also has a manual brake. I really hope it works for me.
This is just one person‘s opinion. I tried the Omeo. It didn’t take me two hours. I was hands-free within 45 minutes. It was absolutely amazing the most comfortably place to sit. Yes it will take you time to get used to it but if I can achieve hands-free in 45 minutes and feel confident, just think what I could do if I had it for over two weeks or more yes I agree you’ve got to pick the right chair for you that you feel comfortable with, but this is one of the best devices on the market
It all depends on what is planned for the day..it is a plus to have, and the more options, the better! What i like, it is futuristic! I'm T2, so would be hard..not impossible, but just hard..but, for lower "broken persons", it looks fantastic! I have a Sunrise Jive-up , and works for me, because i can lay down or "stand-up"..but, this Omeo, if movement forward and braking, (i got the impression not..only turning(?) ).., if yes, then if someone offered me one..yes, for sure! ....for my only electric powered one..i don't know.. But honestly happy they exist, and last years, manufacturers are putting efford on creating good options..and this Omeo, for many, many people, is the right option, i'm sure!
for sure. I love the concept. And I love the Omeo, it just didnt fit in with my lifestyle. But its good to see more inovative designs
This is definitely one of those things that might be really good for very specific people who can afford it, but for the general population of wheelchair users it just won't fit peoples needs or be very accessible. The concept is cool and I'm glad some people use them and love them, but I highly doubt I could use it practically.
I got my wheelchair today and it opened so many doors for me I enjoy it so much! but that omeo would scare the crap out of me I mean I am scared of curbs after today.

I haven’t tried this chair but I’ve tried the Genny which is the same principle though at the time at least, with a handlebar to hold onto as well. It was in like 2015 I tried Genny though so a lot may have happened since.
For me a Segway wheelchair wouldn’t work full time either, I could see myself using one when just being outside on a “walk” and especially if going places where I can’t get around in my manual chair (with or without Smart Drive on), but for everyday use it’s just requiring too much from your body and it doesn’t even have the adaptability of a power chair like Permobil where you can have settings to recline, elevate your seat and whatnot to be able to adjust for comfort or reach things as you’re out and about. In a Segway type chair you have none of those comfort or convenience options so you’re as limited (or even more limited) than in a manual chair (you can at least sit in a wheelie in a manual) and then there’s the portability issues when you need to bring the chair with you in a vehicle… A manual chair you just toss into the car and go, a Segway type chair is a lot more complicated because of the weight and size of it and while doable in a regular car, it just looks cumbersome so it feels like you’d essentially have the same issues as with an actual Permobil when it comes to traveling with it. For me a Permobil F5 is the dream power chair because of comfort, suspension and how the seat can be adjusted on the go, and while I wouldn’t be able to bring one when going by car, at least I could use the Permobil freely locally no matter if I’m just out on a walk or if I’m out grocery shopping on a bad day where I just don’t have the energy to self propel or stand up to reach the top shelves of the store (I’m an ambulatory wheelchair user)
Really enjoyed your review of the Omeo. One thing i've noticed is when people are reviewing electric accessories for wheelchairs they never seem to mention the positives of actually pushing your own chair. I know a lot of people have different issue with shoulders neck back etc. but propelling your own chair is often the only real exercise a lot of wheelchair user will get and going from a manual to an electric chair is not always the best move. I think a lot of able bodied people think that pushing your own chair must be such a chore and that we all should have access to electric chairs. Personally I feel people should use a manual chair for as long as they are fit too. As you say manual chairs have so many positives from a daily use perspective like being light and easily taken in and out of the car and easy to get round in tight locations, but another huge positive is the exercise you get simple from using one ever day
100%! And that’s one reason, at the moment I don’t have an electric chair. I have an ad on for when I need a little help. But right now, I’m reluctant to use electric full time for that reason. Thank you for highlighting that. 😊
If you’ve got a wav then is it crash tested unladen? A boot hoist would likely be a better option

My Quantum 4front 2 cost around $28k in the states. The Omeo looks cool but I see limits to it when compared to a 4 wheel power chair.
I would love to have something like this. I can walk but have eds so am in a lot of pain with my joints. Have been told by physio that a wheelchair would help me but I'm unable to self propel due to my arm joint dislocations. The only issues would be the weight, I live on a remote island so putting it in a small car is needed, the cost obviously, and lastly would worry about it with having a small assistance dog (she's good around manual and electric wheelchairs but still a worry)

Looks so cool and for the right person would be amazing but it wouldn’t work for me. It’s way to whole body physical for my disabilities given that the lack of balance is one of my biggest reasons for being in a wheelchair. My compact indoor/outdoor power chair works really well for me. I have the same issue of not being able to take it in a standard car but it’s not so bad for me day to day as I had to surrender my driving license a good few years ago so public transport is my normal day to day reality.
I wish I could both use and afford this though!

Does it comes with a seatbelt?
$17,000 is way way less than many rehab power chairs. Most Permobil models are much higher than that. The ROVI X3I use that I bought used originally sold for around $38,000.
It's also lighter than those chairs. My X3 is 190 kilos. It also stops faster than most power chairs. I roll way further than that if I stop from full speed.
You really don't want to stop instantly from those speeds. You'll slide right out on the floor.
Just watching the demo for stopping. Was it that you are too light to make it stop quickly?

Anyway this looks cool but not being able to, you know, *rest* against the backrest is an immediate dealbreaker for me. It would just worsen my issues instead of helping them.
it's probably healthier to push your own chair anyway. I am a part time chair user and avoid smart drives etc or electric for as long as possible because I am heavy and need the exercise. But, if I was a full time user my needs woul be different. so, different mobility aides for dif. people like you said!

I've seen a few modern power chairs recently and so far most of the try outs and reviews have been based on a one day trial, which means you don't get the info "it's heavy, I can't use it independently", even though that seemed highly likely from watching. It's interesting that they can go so fast, I don't have a good grasp on the UK rules, but I think this might break them! Which is a shame, the 4mph and 8mph rules don't allow something like keeping up with a cyclist or faster runners. Obviously things often start out heavy and get lighter, but I suspect that there is no way this is ever going to be light enough for most of us to put in vehicles independently. One thing you didn't cover is what kind of hills it can safely go down and manage to go up.

Will insurance pay for it ?
I mean, many power chairs are way more than $17,000. Permobil M5 chairs start way above that. That sounds pretty cheap considering what it does.
does it count your weight to recognize witch direction it will roll? i ask because my lower right leg is missing because i was hit by a car and i have lost my lower right leg and my knee so would it be alright to lean to the right? and what i am asking is \will the wheelchair keep ahold or drop me?
I believe it would be ok. Would have to be something to talk to the reps about. But knowing how it was for me, someone like yourself should be fine x

But I wasn´t sure because I´m not only in a wheelchair, I´m also leagally blind... 😜 Regardles of that hickup, I liked the video, been watching the OMEO for a while, enviously wanting one but not able to operate it... I still can't get over the price tag. This was posted a 5 months ago, but in that time, it's gone up exponentially! Here in the US it's 30K and in UK money it's over 24! I could get an electric car for that. Maybe there's a reason for it, but it seems everything made for people with disabilities makes us a target market for manufacturers to get rich off of. Yes, it's cool, but most of us don't have that kind of jing.
They quoted me a price last week of $40k USD, the price of a entry level Mercedes. What a joke.
I think you’re being scammed. Yes it is an an expensive chair at £19,000 sterling but is nowhere near the prices you have quoted

I'm in the US with ME and EDS. Haven't tried one, but I have no interest in it, either. I think they look like ass and the energy needed would not work for me. They cost $30k here and for that much to not have tilt, recline, and lift seems criminal to me! I'll stick with my Quickie power chair.
It looks amazing but that stopping distance with the way people step in front of wheelchairs, nope.
Actually, the stopping distance is quite good to what the girl in the video explained I’ve tried one personally and you’ll be able to stop in an instant even if somebody stepped in front of you actually my dog came along with me for test drive and he did step out in front of me and I was able to stop Instantly
Goodluck getting insurance to cover this cost, they tend to get you the cheapest, most practical wheelchair. ACC and Accessible wouldn't pay that much, unless you can prove that you NEED this specific chair. Private insurance probably wouldn't either.

This is just one person‘s opinion. I tried the Omeo. It didn’t take me two hours. I was hands-free within 45 minutes. It was absolutely amazing the most comfortably place to sit. Yes it will take you time to get used to it but if I can achieve hands-free in 45 minutes and feel confident, just think what I could do if I had it for over two weeks or more yes I agree you’ve got to pick the right chair for you that you feel comfortable with, but this is one of the best devices on the market
