I came here from Robots but this song intrigues me even more out of context. The choice of instruments, the composition, the singer's voice, the persistent beat across the whole thing, all of these elements work together to create an extremely well-realized sound in a way that feels almost effortless. If the lyrics were absent or vague you'd still get something close to the image of these toiling laborers working in their own little society just from listening to the music alone.

    There's a big dark town
    It's a place i've found
    There's a world going on
    Underground
    They're alive, they're awake
While the rest of the world is asleep
    Below the mine shaft roads
    It will all unfold
    There's a world going on
    Underground
    All the roots hang down
    Swing from town to town
    They are marching around
    Down under your boots
    All the trucks unload
    Beyond the gopher holes
    There's a world going on
    Underground

Tom Waits blesses this earth with music that focuses on primal emotion first, with equally pungent lyrics second. It says a lot about his ability to take noise and form it into an atmosphere that you can perceive without even needing to comprehend his lyrics.

Apparently Waits was inspired by, among other things, the homeless colonies underneath New York City; so this would also make a great theme song for C.H.U.D. which came out the year after Swordfishtrombones and focused on that very topic.

A good friend of mine is mailing me some of his CDs for free, and this is one of them.
