One of the most redeemable things about Haze is how well Duvall was written. He combines the worst aspects of the average Mantel soldier with a sense of superiority: In his mind, he views people hooked on Nectar as the superior being, while he views people not hooked on the drug as subhuman, hence his penchant of referring to the Promise Hand rebels, and the people of Boa in general, as "apes" and "meat". It's a unique combination of drug addiction and the run of the mill fascist rhetoric, and Duvall clung on to it unto death.
