We took the boys for a surprise run at the park and the warm weather weighs on Todd. Apparently he gets a bit overheated from excitement so will be taking him to get checked out to ensure everything is okay.

My boy (a black Lab) gets easily overheated over 60 degrees. His normal core temp is 102 degrees, plus he has black fur that absorbs the sun. He’s been like this since I brought him home from his service dog school at 2.5 years old in 2017, and he’s 8.5 now. My boy is extremely healthy other than extremely bad allergies he developed while he was between 2-2.5 years old. It’s a good idea to check with the vet, but I suspect Todd probably just has a higher core temperature than his papa. You can find out by checking his temperature every day while he’s at rest early in the morning and average the temperatures over the week. You can check to see how high Todd’s temperature is getting for a week each time after activity in the heat and average that as well. That info can help the vet determine if it’s just a case of higher body core temp or something else.
I’ve learned a lot of tricks and have tried every product under the sun to keep my boy cool - he’s a service dog and needs to be comfortable in order to safely assist me. There’s an effective cooling shirt called the Coolvio B’Arctic that REALLY helps. Best cooling shirt/vest I’ve ever tried. You can use it dry for 30 degrees of relief, but wetting it makes it even more effective (and it stays wet for a long time unlike other products that dry out fast - you wring it out and it won’t drip one bit like most other products that drip everywhere in your house before you can get out the door). It also works when cloudy and in ambient lighting.
Also helps to wet ears while out and after it’s time to cool off - but never use very cold water because that can cause shock. I’ve learned not to let my boy have too much activity during the day and to take a more leisurely pace for walks above 60 degrees. He mostly runs and plays in the evening/night - and even then, gotta be careful not to let him overheat.

I lived in Michigan and couldn't cope with the hot summers! I can't imagine wearing a fur coat through it all too! Bless him, I'm glad Todd's ok. And Linda too! ❤
Hope you're feeling much better Linda & of course Todd. Moving to a tropical country is out of the question then for todd & puppa tuck 😄. I don't blame the boys, I think 60-65 F is the prefect temp! Take care also Mr Linda 😊.

Such gorgeous, golden babies. Try the cooling mats. My retriever used this when it was hot, though fortunately my country wouldn't be anyway near as hot as yours. As a population, we couldn't cope !!! LOL. Hope the boys stay well.😊

My 15 year old golden never liked the heat. Anything above 60s is too hot. All exercise was halted in summer. Good you have a pool for them to play in.
Always check the temp. of the Asphalt and their pads. I
f the asphalt is hot to your hand it's too hot for the paw pads and check their pads to make sure there are no rocks, seeds or other small things that can bother them.

My sweet golden retriever, Ellie, was just like Todd. She would always go straight for any shade she could find...and we live in San Diego where it doesn't usually get super hot. I'm happy to hear that Todd is fine and Linda is feeling better!

I live in Australia where our Summers are very hot and a freind with a beautiful golden retriever had her hair shaved short every Spring to avoid overheating in the warmer temperatures. Probably not necessary in Michigan but it's still worth a thought as T&T could be more comfortable too, although hopefully it doesn't happen again.

Kozmo does it too. Today we were at the park and I sat in the sun and he went and sat in the shade. When he sleeps on the bed, if he lays right up against me he gets too hot, and goes and lays next to the slider door.😂
