How to learn SQL for data science interview (the minimize effort maximize outcome way)

- This is a step by step guide for how I learned SQL for my FANG data science interview. I had never touched SQL before and only had 2 weeks to prepare for my interview. So I made a scientifically-backed study plan to learn SQL most efficiently with the least amount of time and effort. By the end of the 11 days, I felt super confident and prepared. I went on to pass my FANG data science interviews and got the job!
My motto: Minimize effort and maximize outcome!!
Btw apologies about audio quality from about 2 - 3.5 min mark. Something weird happened to my mic :(

Hi Tina, thanks a lot for sharing your cool strategy for minimizing efforts and maximizing output! The 5 steps for solving SQL questions are great too - it helps to grasp the key information of the question, arrange our thoughts before writing queries, double-check to correct mistakes, make further improvement if necessary.

I usually get discouraged when I listen to someone teach me something that I can't make sense of, but something about you makes it exciting to learn I think it's your voice. It's calming, doesn't make me feel dumb and makes me feel hopeful without being "too good to be true" too much if that makes sense. Thanks you Tina Huang

Hi Tina! Thank you very much for this comprehensive guide to learning SQL that I am currently following. I did not know about Mode website before watching your video and I have been going through the content, it is amazing! I was wondering if you knew a similar kind of resource for Statistics and Probability content that would be useful, to learn what's expected to know for a Data Science Interview ? I really value your opinion and would love to hear your recommendations. Thank you very much! Keep up the good work! 💪💪
TY very much fo this video. Really helpful!
Loved how you applied in selecting the specifics of the content to be mastered like the interview questions and spent most time on it then moved on to the other parts

Pretty well explained.it will be even better if you consider making a video where you solve 10-15 sql questions in one go.
really great insight!
Found another awesome vids this year!
Aww I’m so happy to hear that 😊
Love your videos. 💯
You make data science so approacheable, without oversimplifying it to make it sound too easy (as in you need to do almost nothing)
Hi Tina,
I am currently making the switch from HR Consultant to HR-Analist.
Structuring the approach of a problem by writing down the query steps before you write and validate the actual query itself, wow! This was the key take away for me.
Putting yourself through those steps first, not only shows you know what your doing for the interviewer. More importantly it helps and checks your implementational knowledge.
Thanks for sharing this, this video just blew my mind :-)
YAY I’m so glad that resonated with you so much! That is one of the major things I tried to emphasize in the video. Took me a while to figure out tbh but once I forced myself to do it that way things started to click together. If you haven’t already I also highly recommend checking out a few videos in my sql Sundays series. I do interview questions in that style too and the questions are full real questions as opposed to this demo that was just a quick demo :)
Thanks for pointing out the SQL Sundays videos! I’m ready to work on more complex problems, so will definately check out those full on interview questions.
Thank you for sharing the awesome video! :)
You’re welcome!! So glad you enjoyed it! :D
Awesome stuff!
Thanks for this!
Great video, I'm learning SQL from Mode, just wanted your quick thought on their Python tutorial as well.

So glad you found it helpful! 😊 I just filmed a video of me going through a SQL interview question! Coming soon ❤️

@@stevenpeterson2587 interview wen't well, but they ended up hiring a more experienced developer for the position.
Super useful 👍.
Hi Tina, your video is helpful to me. Thanks. I would like to get your some advice how to become a data scientist with a bio-statistician background using SAS/SQL and R language on daily job. I had a master of statistics and work as bio-statistician now. I would like to see whether I could get close to a DS role in future.
this was great
Thank you Tina :) It's really helpful for a beginner to start learning SQL in a minimized effort way

I have long carrer as software developer, but on my first sql code test, I did not pass, cause it's for data analyst. At the end of the day, it has some specific questions that is not usual for developers. I think your tips about searching for commom question for data analyst interview will the key to my sucess.
Thanks a lot.
You are the best!!!!!
Aww thank you! :D
It is very helpful!
I'm so glad!! :)

This was very useful. Thank you so much. May God bless you abundantly. I recently failed a Facebook interview because my interview strategy preparation was very poor, how I wish I had followed all the steps you highlighted in your video. Please how can I reach out to you?
Thank you so much mam
Thank you alot
Thank you
Thanks!!
You're very welcome :D
Glad found your channel. So much rich content. Finally a female DS rolemodel !!
I'm so glad!! Thank you ❤
OMG !!! .. just do more videos on whiteboard SQL, like one video with the most common whiteboard SQL questions .. we like to learn how you think
thanks Tina
Very nice
what if the 'event_time_stamp' is actually the time_stamp of when the flag is turned on or off? I think we need to get the max(event_time_stamp) and group by page_id, then use the where clause for flag = 'on'
That's my interpretation of the question as well
Yes that's the correct way to solve this and in reality probably the only way. Unless the database contains one record for every second since the beginning of the page.
I am unsure why NOW() is being used. It's a database so the assumption is the data is in real time. Like by the second.
If you max event_time_stamp and group by page_id, wouldn’t that that result in page counts for each of the current time stamp? We need the overall page counts if I am interpreting it correctly so maybe what you suggested should be the sub query then we count (*) from the sub query to get total pages on
Do you think achieving your PCPP certification is an efficient idea in getting a job or what do you think are the best certifications for becoming a data scientist?
I use the white board method. It works for me.
Cool videos..
do you know, you are the best.
Plz make more like dis
Apart from Mode what other platform did she suggest to use for query practice ?? Please can someone help me
Tina ur so funny & smart & informative & sagacious
Awww thank you ❤️❤️
