  • January 25th is Burns Night, which we adore celebrating as a family with a hearty supper. Scotland has a very special place in our hearts, and you don't have to be Scottish to celebrate Burns Night!
    The purpose of the evening is to mark the life and celebrate the birthday of the Scottish poet and lyricist Robert Burns, widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland and perhaps most famous for penning Auld Lang Syne.

    An excerpt of 'Address To A Haggis - Robert Burns' traditionally read as the haggis is cut! The whole poem is rather fun to attempt after a few whiskies...
    "Ye Pow’rs wha mak mankind your care,
    And dish them out their bill o’ fare,
    Auld Scotland wants nae skinking ware
    That jaups in luggies;
    But, if ye wish her gratefu’ prayer,
    Gie her a Haggis!"

    Enjoyed your lovely video, I remember being told by my Mum, cold water for underground vegetables and hot water for any vegetables that grow above ground. For anyone who does not know why the hot water sets the colour in green vegetables, I was also told to leave the lid off to keep them bright green, as the gas they give off whilst cooking can turn them grey green. Might have to try haggis now!

    This reminds me of a Burn's night Helen Bankes from the Old Mill and I did a while ago. We didn't know what the Scotch eat so we just did a Thai curry, pizza and Swiss roll and then we all sang some ABBA. The Vicar said it was the best Burn's night he'd ever been to

    It all looks delicious. Thank you for reminding me it's Burns Night next week - my diary doesn't tell me. I think it was fitting that you piped the cream - after all, the haggis should be 'piped in'. :)

      @@ask.charlie I once bought a friend a vegetarian haggis. When it arrived it had the rather sinister tag line: "vegetarian haggis...in a skin"!
