Do Soundproof Curtains Actually Work? FULL SOUND TEST!

- Soundproofing curtains is not something that would actually soundproof a window. They should be called sound deadening curtains because they absorb the sound in the room and can also absorb outside noise but they aren't not noise blocking curtains.
In this video I did a sound test of a triple layer sound deadening curtain. They are also called blackout curtains because the middle layer is a thicker black felt that blocs the sunlight. It also helps black a little bit of noise, you will be able to see the before and after sound test with my decibel meter for these so called sound proof curtains.

Thank you so much for making this. There are so many resources online claiming that "soundproof" curtains can help, but none actually provide any sort of useful measurement.

Oh thank god, I thought he would never shut up
Thanks. Went straight to this
The hero we didn’t know we needed😭😂
He babbles for minutes about trivia such as how he didn't order the right size of curtains. Then he botches the experiment by changing the sound effect before testing the new curtains. Right after he notices a strange phenomenon of the other curtains increasing the decibelage for no apparent reason, but he doesn't explore that. Nor does he test other brands or styles of soundproof curtains. I think it is partially on CZcams though for encouraging people to make 10 minute videos instead of shorter ones.
4 additional points .....
1) Your Noise Maker Box can not possibly create any frequency below ~100hz with a tiny ~2 inch speaker,
therefore, this testing method is rather limited in scope.
Traffic noise, especially large trucks, can produce extremely low frequencies,
which these Curtains will not have very much effect on because
they are relatively light weight, and lots of MASS is needed for low frequencies.
2) You did not mention the fact that these Curtains will also absorb a lot of noise originating INSIDE the room,
as well as reflections/resonances/echos in the room.
3) Regarding installation and effectiveness ........
The Curtain should be ordered in a width that is 2 to 4 times WIDER than the window opening.
The curtain should NOT be "flat" when closed, but should remain "convoluted" into an "S" shape, all the way across the window,
even when completely covering the entire window opening.
This will increase the total MASS/WEIGHT, and THICKNESS of the Curtain, and substantially increase its effectiveness.
4) If the Felt can be removed for washing, then it should also be possible to add a sheet of "Mass-Loaded-Vinyl" INSIDE the Curtain.
This would increase its noise absorbing effectiveness substantially.
.
.
Those are all excellent points! I will certainly mention the MLV inside on a future video! Thanks for the tips!
What are you thoughts on train noise?
@@Skysdalimit247
Move at least ~5 miles away from any Train Tracks.
You may still faintly hear the Train's Horns, but at least the ground won't shake as much.
Curtains will make zero difference to Train noise.
A Concrete Building with Triple-Pane Glass will stop most of the low frequencies from a Train.

6:45 "The curtains actually makes the sound louder!" Have you tried maybe shutting up for a second? Hard to measure the sound from outside when it's constantly reading the sound from your mouth don't ya think?
So in conclusion, the sound deadening curtain can reduce sound from 69 to 61 db with window open, and 53 to 50 db when window closed
That does NOTHING.
@@JP5466 Remenber dB is a logoritmic scale.
@@JP5466 That is huge difference 3db is half the sound gone. Its literally perfect for making room acoustic better without much compromise and huge price tag
@@wadimek116 It's not road/engine noise or birdies chirping that bothers people, it's car stereos with ghetto blasting bass music is the main problem ppl are having today. Those silly curtains do nothing for loud mid and low frequencies.

What about replacing the felt with a sheet of mass loaded vinyl? I wonder if that would do more than just -1 or -2 decibels
This should be titled 'The most inaccurate testing methods ever'.
I am adding a partition wall in a big living room. Shall I add this curtain in between 5/8th sheet rock instead of MLV as MLV is expensive?
What brand and model is your sound level meter?
how would you think this would work for example for living in a studio apertment with a freeroaming night pet that get zoomies. thinking of putting up 2 layers of this in the bed and maybe also closing out the pet to the kitchen/hallway area with 1 other curtin to help the sound
If I play loud music in my house will this help contain the sound in my house and not sending it outside?

Ha ha! extra heavy duty bag. Perfect for my van. The curtain separates the driver from the passenger area.
practically useless for sound reduction. the white noise machine used wasnt even a potent source of noise. this will do nothing for barking dogs or loud vehicles. thanks for showing
3:41 my guy got mad at the packaging
Can u do more of apartment owners and what we can do on stopping noise to go throw or coming in I was thinking of just getting using a sound Curtains the wall i share with and maybe behind it the foam squares i know you said on ur other videos it dont block the sound of coming in or out but I felt that its on of thing I can do to my apartment so that its two way of blocking something the square foam then the Curtains I was also thinking of getting dry wall and standard up without screwing anything to the walls or gluing anything Just maybe having some putty to keep both of them attached to each other
What did you end up doing? Any luck?
I put harbor freight moving blankets on the sheared walls then got a thin wood that I can put against that then I got curtains to cover one side then I got some design wall paper on the other side to make it look clean when people come in they dont notice anything they think its looks normal
@@lapear6068 thanks! Maybe we’ll try this too. We just moved into a rented apartment and the train is awful during the night /very early morning.
3 dB reduction corresponds to **half** the noise. Decibels use a logarithmic scale.
@Jingcheng Ma it is when you consider reflections and the sounds ability to pass thru material (thru walls into other rooms and/or neighbors if you live in an apartment)
That is in terms of pure sound energy. In terms of perceived volume by humans, 10dB is the rule of thumb for half. But then we need to talk about what frequencies? Bass frequencies, which are the biggest problem, are likely not reduced by these curtains by even 1 dB. OK for chirping birds. However, I will agree that 3dB is not insignificant as part of a plan for general noise reduction. It just shouldn't be the only thing you do.
I've seen a lot of noice reduction curtain test in yt, it seem thier not so effective in blocking outside noice.
Could you use these curtains to create an enclosure (i.e. around a desk) for voice over? Would you recommend this technique at all and if so what are some options? I noticed while working with stage theater that the noise between the traveler curtains was extremely dead.
You certainly could! It would make the sound “sound” better.
@@soundproofguide Thanks!
You can also use moving blankets
What about filling the window panes with styrofoam or that pink insulation foam board?
High and mid frequencies yes, but not lows.

Would you think that these types of curtains would help make a room sound less echoey and active? I would like to occasionally use my full studio to record in and there is just too much room noise.

y this guy talk so damn slow
This noise machine's speaker is not covering the full spectrum of sound to a human, so it's not really giving the best example of what the curtains can do
This guy is probably lying - I bought the curtains after seeing this review and boy do I regret buying from this company. I've been getting weird spam calls from China ever since, and their curtains first and foremost do not work. I also received a different size from what I ordered but their customer service told me to donate them and that they were keeping my money. I paid 140 for the curtains.
bird song is annoying now
You have like 3 of these videos about soundproof curtains... why?
oh.. You're sponsored.. Ya, I'll check out literally any other video on this topic.
Will do nothing for lower frequencies. Waste of money. Save the money for something(s) that will at least get you 15db reduction.
I’ve had a company come and look at soundproofing my music room where I dj/ have parties. They said I’ll gain about -15db would that actually make a big difference?
Will any curtains give you 15db reduction?
@@vroomfondel5447 How? The loud low frequencies are penetrating the window and wall. Might help with high frequencies, but not bass. The only thing that reduces loud bass is MASS, multiple air cavities and more MASS on top of that.
@@lukewatts7693 For loud bass?... barely.
@@JP5466 hi, so I had the room done, massive difference they installed secondary window, and stripped the whole room and done their thing. I can now only hear music around the door area, it’s a solid wood door but I did not opt for a secondary door as it would have bumped the price up another 1-2k. So I was thinking maybe getting a soundproofing curtain to use over the door? In terms of bass, yes you can still feel it slightly and I know it’s going to be very difficult to stop bass. Also now I can hear more of an echo so I’ve got some foam panels to put on the wall.
You need to shut up when doing the noise measuring
What will the birds do about the annoying person noise?
joke
bird noise is easy. get a predator, like a hawk or falcon. you will never hear a bird again. guaranteed. because predator birds eat them as snacks, so the noisy birds tend to run for their lives. 1 hawk will probably clear a few miles radius.
They only settle at houses with a Stairville curtain of course.
It depends on type of Bird in your neighborhood
So total rubbish then
It’s more of an add on to soundproofing and shouldn’t be the core product use to soundproof.
Might actually help to stop talking when you're doing a sound level measurement...
This is why CZcams needs to bring dislike backs.
