Playing 2 Therevox Synths at the Same Time

- A short piece I wrote for two Therevox synthesizers. I got my first Therevox (ET-4, the top instrument) nearly a decade ago, I've used it in countless recordings and have always found it incredibly unique and inspiring.
When the creator of these instruments (Mike Beauchamp) told me he was working on a new model, I knew I absolutely HAD to get it. The new model (ET-5.3, bottom instrument in this video) has been dramatically improved and is an absolute joy to play.
I thought it would be fun to document this point in time where I have two of these instruments. Playing both in tune at the same time was quite the challenge and took a few days of practice.

Technical details:
Normally, you control the volume of the Therevox using the intensity keys on the left hand side. However, for this performance I needed to play both instruments simultaneously so I set the oscillators to "hold" (play constantly) and used two expression pedals to control the synths instead (one pedal per synth). The pedals are actually routed to filter cutoff - when the filter is completely closed, there is no sound. Halfway through the piece, I tweak the sounds by bringing in the second oscillators on both Therevoxes and increasing filter resonance.
I didn't add any effects to the recording - the reverb is the Therevox's built in spring reverb. The only processing I did was some panning and minimal EQ.
Composed and performed live by Gil Assayas (GLASYS). - Hudba
Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross been real quiet since this dropped
If I heard this in the trailer to a game, I would buy it immediately.
Thanks! I better make a game then 😀
Oh, just beautiful. I’ve always loved the eerie, beautiful, sad sound of theremins, so this is wonderful. It does a pretty mean bass, too!
Thank you! Yeah the low end on this thing is massive. I actually had to roll off some of the low end with EQ 😂
The fact that this only got 4k views hurts me. You're so flipping talented and honestly I really think you're underrated.
You’re so kind, thanks for your support and encouragement! Really means a lot 😀💜
agreed
Absolutely love this. Interesting composition as always!!
Thanks Jank! Glad you enjoyed it 🙏
Synths are just awesome but what you are able to do with them is even better!
Thanks so much! :)
Awesome vibe!
Thanks my friend! 🙏
I love the sound this thing produces
JUST IN TIME FOR HALLOWEEN !
This sounds like it'd come from a Nintendo horror game. Love it
Man, I'm a sucker for counterpoint, this is fantastic!
Thanks Matthew! :)
Love it, sounds so much more involving than straight synth music
What a cool piece to start the spooky season off with! I was getting vibes of a haunted Church or a ghost procession or something like that and the theravox is such a unique instrument I'd love to see more! Great work man glad to see a new video!!!!!
Thanks my friend! Happy spooky season! 🙏
Awesome sounds!
Thanks! 😀🙏
lack of harmonization is easily the #1 thing missing from the theremin.. this looks amazingly intuitive to play..
1:00 🥶🥶
This was the coolest and strangest thing I’ve watched recently!
Thank you! 😄
That (those) [and you as well] are wicked. :o
Wow! Spooky vibes!! ❤ ❤
Love it!
Incredible!
Thank you 🙏
ghost choir has some serious competition 👀
Lovely performance/piece! This is such a fantastic-sounding instrument. My wish list of synths is getting odder as it is getting longer...
Thank you! It’s definitely a one of a kind instrument. I highly recommend it :)
Sounds epic, straight out of a horror roleplay game!
1:02 Sounded like the beginning of combine battle
Wow! Coool sound! - a bit like the C64 SID chip.
Beautiful! Like spooky church music.
sick!
Awesomeness
Hey Gil, Kids are asking if the Utopia thing or Todd or Kasim is gonna happen anytime soon... Thanks for any input. Love and Peace. Tatt and Kiddos
Don't you love how awkward it is! I played one over the weekend. Someone thought I knew what I was doing. Oh the joys of constriction and my inert ability to easily do creepy vibes. 😆 Good stuff as always. :-)
1:00 sounds like something you’d here in doom eternal soundtrack
Haven’t played that game yet! Need to check it out
@@GLASYS it’s a game about killing demons. And it has heavy metal.
@@d_jpeg69 I know the DOOM franchise, just haven’t played any after DOOM 3 😀
Creo que en el soundtrack de la serie Loki los utilizan. 😲👌
Beautiful. Metroid vibes? I think so!
Thanks Adam! The Metroid influence is always there ;)
Still waiting for Matt Belemy to come in. Or Thom Yorke I'm perfectly fine with either.
Would be a dream to work with either of them 😀🙏
Wow
I got Gremlin's Mogwai Gizmo Jetsons Dr.Who vibes! 😁👍
Funnily enough I’ve never watched any of those 😅
@@GLASYS There's time enough to watch Gremlins 1&2 before the Apocalypse, enjoy your movie night Gil 🍿🍿😁
oo minor to major third as the main motif
Awesome job! Do you mind if I use it in a vid and give you credit? It’s an inspiring piece
Thanks! No problem, go for it :)
@@GLASYS thanks!
johnny greenwood approved this
Ok, you have to flush this piece out. Add some drums, and some other sounds. It really feels like it could be another really good arrangement! PS: did you own the ET-4.3 first?
Thanks, I might develop the idea! Yes, I’ve had the ET-4 for nearly 4 years
Here-a-vox, there-a-vox! 😀
I've heard of the theremin, but hadn't considered it could be "westernized", if that makes any sense. I daresay there are worse ways to be introduced to this particular instrument, thanks 👍
Loovley! And remember that you want to sell me one of them! :D
Thanks! Nice try at jedi mind tricks lol
@@GLASYS Can't blame me for trying!! :D
Is volume controlled by foot petals?
Yes, I explain it in detail in the description. It’s actually filter cutoff I’m controlling
So Radiohead / Portishead
Man I wish there were actual keys so you could play it like ONDES MARTENOT
You can attach a keyboard to it quite easily using the CV inputs if you want
@@GLASYS kool
Am I the only one who has never heard of this?
Is this slap house?
What does that mean?
