  • In this Thailand travel guide I want to show you what I believe to be the most underrated temple in all of Thailand. Despite only being an hours drive away from Chiang mai (and near the beautiful town of Chiang Dao), this temple does not feature on any list of must see temples or experiences, and is often ignored in favour of the temples of Chiang rai or the old town.
The temple is Wat Banden Sala Si Mueang Kaen usually shortened to Wat Banden, and in this video I’ll show why I think this temple is so underrated, and how it compares to the other more famous temples of northern Thailand.

Glad it was helpful! I'll actually have a full Chiang Dao travel guide up in the next week or so. It will have all the info on the other places that I mentioned towards the end of the video

I visited this temple yesterday. Collectively this temple houses the largest number of halls, chedis and statues that I know of outside Bangkok excluding ruined temples. It is almost a museum of architectural design and a classic example of Thailand's religious artistic impression. However what bothers me from my travels all over Thailand is the endless quest to encourage merit making on an industrial scale. Late in the afternoon yesterday they were winding down after a grand ceremony as a prelude to opening the main hall. Under the watchful eye of an official a table was stacked high with banknotes. Such devotion is beyong my comprehension. What this temple lacks is historic relevance but artistic impession and religious ferver it has in abundance.

I'm glad you liked it too. I agree, what this temple lacks in history, it makes up for with creativity. I get what you mean about the grand ceremonies and all. It's wild to see those stacks of banknotes, right? I hope you enjoy your stay exploring the rest of Northern Thailand
