My favourite bit of Spawn trivia: the massive bucket boot the character started sporting around this time was a result of the first run of Spawn action figures consistently falling over. Rather than, y'know, making the actual sculpt less shitty, Todd just gave him a spiky elephant leg, made it canon in the comics, and (probably) went for a massive early lunch on the Image expense account

Since you asked, Spawn did get a special 200th issue featuring Jim Lee, Greg Capulo, David Finch, and Rob Liefeld. Now over 300 issues, and 30 years since his debut, Spawn is now the longest running indie comic book... And not a wiff of that movie that got announced (Check notes) back in 2015, seven years ago, with the occasional updates every other year.
I thought Gold Digger was the longest running indie comic book.

I keep meaning to watch that _Spawn_ series from HBO starring Keith David. October is coming up, so maybe that will be a good time. Oh, speaking of Keith David, that's not him in this game, it's Kevin Michel Richardson, who has been called in to pinch-hit for Keith on a few occasions, such as in _Spectacular Spider-Man._
It's still really good. It's what got me into Spawn, but it was cancelled and ended on a cliff hanger.

@@richardblack3385 it actually wasn't a rumor. It was confirmed. The only reason it hasn't gotten anywhere is because Toddy Mc wants to direct the movie himself and is not will to budge on it.
Yeah its supposed to be centered around Twitch who was supposed to be played by Jeremy Renner, would be a good fit.
Spawn consistently sells tons of comics….even the spin offs.
I remember playing this game a few months ago, and honestly all things considered, it's not bad.
The surprisingly wide enemy variety is without a doubt the best part, but Spawn's general controls and the lack of variety in his moveset hurt.
Also, the Angel Station level, the one before the final boss, is an absolutely convoluted mess that was a pain to get through.

My exact thoughts but they needed better bosses by far. We got a Demon bulldozer instead of the many other image characters.
I remember playing this back in the day and being pissed that Spawn doesn't have his cape out all the time. Glad I'm not the only one.
After they make such a show of it swirling around in the opening, baffling to not have it as part of the character model
Spawn actually started printing money again right before it hit issue 300. Maybe a year or two after that number it was doing well enough that Toddy Mac launched 3 more ongoing series set in the Spawn universe which are all selling pretty good. Spawn is one of the sellingist comics on the stands again.

Funny enough the Spawn comic it sounds like you were describing was called Spawn Armageddon. That's the storyline where he gets angel wings and fought God and Satan.

What's weird is that kid friend _Spawn Adventure_ is probably the most entertaining Spawn comic I've ever read. The material works real well G-rates.

It’s awesome that they brought Keith David do his reprise role of Spawn,cause he is popular at the animated series. Also Todd McFarlane written the games story as we can tell that he wrote this. Even though this game may not be as good as DMC or God Of War. It’s still an ok game.

A worst version of Enter The Matrix.
Think about it, a 3rd person mode with platforming,
then it enters to side angle mode like a fighting game for combat.
But Enter the Matrix was better because it had guns and combos and better controls,
kinda wish Spawn: The Eternal kinda was like that, or Tomb Raider meets Fighter Force gameplay would been better.

Ah spawn. The comic character that launched my favorite comic publisher (image comics)of all time.
a game I'll always associate with Spawn Armageddon is X2:Wolverine's Revenge. Played them around the same time in my childhood (they were released 8 months apart) and they have similar comic cover collectables. (what comic game didn't?) It has its own flavor of jank though not sure how well it holds up.
Medieval Spawn was probably my favorite of the odd What-If-ish figures.
My copy of Spawn:Armageddon might be collecting dust on my drawer but i remember actually having fun fighting Cygor and redeemer,though not as much as playing as D.A.Spawn in the demon's hand.

I really wish they would make a new age Spawn game. We have everything to make it work: chain physics and cape physics both would work awesome, and this would go so hard as with a third person movement shooter open world design
Going to be that guy at 2 mins in - Canonically in the comics; Wanda and Al did get pelvic again regardless of the fact she was still with Terry at the time... and they had a child who was later aborted I believe (because really, that wasn't going to do her marriage any favors, was it?) and that kid ended up being a spawn in hell who frankly wants to kill them both for abandoning her, since I believe she was raised by one of Al's enemies to hate him. Specifically. At the end of her arc, Wanda ends up as a hellspawn herself. She went to hell when she died. So really, how "good" was she? I mean... it took probably not even five actual years for her to move past Al's death and get pregnant with a new husband. Cyan was like 3-4 yrs old already when Al got back, is all I'm saying. She chose the guy who was her guy's best friend. I'm not saying she had to grieve forever or wait for him to come back all monkey's paw... but Damn. Literally. That's a level of callous I don't want to think of. (Could possible argue the author's opinion of women, but I'm no psychologist, even from an armchair that I don't have) Frankly, she spent half that marriage pining for Al; and yeah you can argue correctly haunted by him... but she was never really fair to Terry or to Al either way. Being honest, Terry should have known better, so it wouldn't surprise me if he ended up either in hell but lower ranked than Wanda - and definitely Al since I'm pretty sure with the death of Malbolgia nothing at all beats him - or as some priggish angel who's forever opposed to the both of them. But that's just my two cents. Still fun to watch this.
Spawn is a character I think I like but really it's just he looks cool and is fun to draw (at least until I'm tired of chains)
I wanted even more weapons and abilities tbh. Spawn and his cape can shape shift so he wouldn't only have access to Agony. I wanted a sword and hand to hand combat and more combos. I also used to glide alot to see his cape. I didn't hate the game but there's alot I wish that could've been added or improved.

2:55 isn't that just a case of them taking off the cape because it would have been a pain to animate in real time on PS2? it would still be a huge loss in coolness, but i wouldn't be surprised if that was the reason.
I was thinking the same. Probably it would have caused the game to bug a lot with all the complex cape animations that probably require lots of graphic power to animate, so they opted to turn it into Agony.

2023 will mark two anniversaries for Spawn. Armageddon will be 20 years old, it'll be the same amount of time since we've had a Spawn game. It'd be nice if we could at least get a port on Steam or something. Not counting fight games of course.

I remember seeing a preview of this that was included as a bonus feature in an Xbox game. Almost all the in-game footage was walking and shooting the pistols.

I wanted to like this game, but I found all the damn icons, like the grapple points, to be insulting. It's like the designers saying "Hey, we know you're too stupid to figure out where to use the grappling hooks on your own, so so we made sure to mark all the spots where you're allowed to use them with neon blue icons so that you can't possibly miss them." I'm honestly surprised that they didn't put glowing arrows on the ground showing you which way to go.

I know this is an older vid but the Shinobi PS2 games have more cape-flowing going on than Spawn PS2, which is weird. They nailed the cape in the Shinobi PS2 games tho, i enjoy them. (At least Shinobi, the Nightshade game I havent delved into yet)

I so very badly wanted this game to be great when it was released. Sadly, it's really just average. Not bad mind you just average, and repetitive. On a side note, Matt is correct on Spawn's chains having a mind of their own. His costume is a symbiote that can react on it's own without Al having to make it do things. Though it's not like Venom where it has it's own individual personality. And despite Matt making a joke about Spawn getting weaker in the sunlight he was actually close to the lore. Spawn doesn't get weaker in sunlight, but does get a "sort of" buff from darkness. I can't remember exactly how it works (or if it was ever clearly explained), but it has something to do with darkness being the shroud of evil and his power increasing the further away he is from God. Of course this comes at the cost of him losing more of his humanity and what have you. It's been a long time since I've read the issues that dealt with that part of his powers, and it may have been retconned at this point. Either way, great video Matt. This brought back some memories, not all good ones, but memories none the less.
Yeah hid suit has a name even, I think K7 Leetha, which translates to something like K from the 7th house of Leetha. My memory is shit, but I think that's right without googling it.

I still love spawn enough to know about his suit, he's my fav character all time, well him and Frank Castle is a close 2nd, but he has a lot going on, a lot to offer story wise. If you seen the HBO series it's following him as he's fights with his conscience about having to do his part as a hell spawn, and kinda looking over the homeless alley residents.
@@jmolvin9055 Oh, the HBO series was definitely ahead of it's time. I think I may still have it on DVD. I just finished putting together a complete collection of the main series myself, which is partially why I started my channel in the first place. I've been going back and reading the series from the start along with a lot of other early Image titles. Spawn really was something radically different at that time. It's pretty interesting reading through the fan letter sections of the early issues, and seeing people's reactions to it. Some were put off by the graphic violence, and religious overtones. Others were incredibly excited to see such a mature/fresh take on the super hero genre. Many people like to trash McFarlane, but I honestly do think that he changed the industry as a whole for the better.

Todd needs to stick to spawns strengths for a while. Animation, cool stories and make some good games. I think he needs to think about how spawn will translate on screen. I also think cowboy spawn mte be a better story to tell or easier to navigate, than al Simmons?
