Saw this beautiful lady and did the tour with my family 5 years ago. Took me a few minutes to go aboard her. The memories of being on my old naval base were thick. Eyes saw it as it is, my mind saw it as it was. In my mind I could still see all the Navy personnel and the ships the sounds and the smells came flooding back. Plan on going back someday
Thank you for posting this WONDERFUL video of the U.S.S. Hornet. I used to live in Fremont (8 years ago) and would go to the ship regularly. I currently live in New Mexico where we have no deep water ports - ha ha. Good job.

My father served aboard the Hornet in the late 50’s before transferring to the newly commissioned Independence. I even showed my son a cart my father plotted of one cruise in the Pacific he kept.
Here is an idea I thought of. Use the flights deck and the main deck as a museum for people to visit. Take the lower decks and turn them into living spaces for old veterans to live in. Even homeless older men or women to live in. They could volunteer to clean up. If one of these ships can hold 5000 people. There is already a galley and kitchen to use. Just need supplies. Gee, I just wondered.
You are walking through the compartments that were used by the air wings when they came aboard as sleeping quarters. The round dome is the Spin 8. I had to chip the paint of the platform in punishment for being irritating to the Chief. circa 1963
I've been on her 4 times. I can't believe how much more is there. 1st time there were no tours, you could go anywhere. Last time the 14 was there, you know a 14 never flew off her. The Airstream was there but not much more. I need to go back.
The actions of an operational carrier are varied and intense, especially on the flight-deck. Dangerous is more accurate than marvelous, dangerous and intense, because there are way too many ways to die in a working flight-deck, and every rule for that world is written in blood.
Was there a couple of years ago and had forgotten what great shape those volunteers kept her in (a lot of SF bay cities won't contribute because it's a monument "to" war).
That would be wrong. Boilers and the rest of the engineering plant take regular maintenance to keep them operational, and now the only maintenance she gets is preserving watertight integrity. To that end, a whole lot of valves were removed and blanked-over, pumps removed, etc.
@@tonyb5515 Very bad idea to put it in San Francisco. Also, the museum doesn't have a lot of money to repair the ship or get more aircraft. Remember that USS Hornet is what keeps the NAS Alameda alive.
