    Channel 4 does and has made its own movies since it launced in the 80s... Some good British films too: Crying Game, Shallow Grave, Trainspotting, Gregory's Girl, Full Monty, Fever Pitch, My Beautiful Laundrette, Rita, Sue & Bob Too, Four Weddings & A Funeral, Madness of King George, Naked, Brassed of etc. to name but a few... Who'd of thunk it, Brian was right for once :o

      "Channel 4 does and has made its own movies" which it does using licence-fee funding. I like C4, and its news is far less biased than the BBC, but it is publicly funded.

    • @Yungrexy
      @Yungrexy Před 3 lety

      @@ohgosh5892 It isn't publicly funded, it's funded by advertisements! You need a license to watch it as many don't realise it is a licence for owning a tv that recieves live broadcasts not just specifically the BBC (which is fully funded by the license). Sounds even more absurd when you lay it out like that, would we tolerate them puting a levy on newer devices like laptops, smart phones or games consoles? Why the BBC isn't being offered as a subscription service at this stage is baffling, most people would not pay for it given the choice (same with the monarchy).

      @@Yungrexy C4 " It isn't publicly funded" This is a very debateable point. In 2008-2010, C4 were seeking a £150m bail-out, and looking for a slice of the WT licence fee (s, not c, it's a noun)!
      What actually happened is murky in the extreme. When seeking state aid, the EU intervened, as they are legally required to. C4's response is here:ec.europa.eu/competition/state_aid/reform/comments_broadcasting/channel_4.pdf
      Furthermore, as C4 are state owned, and the Tories have interfered in appointments as here: www.theguardian.com/media/2021/apr/14/ministers-veto-reappointment-of-two-women-to-channel-4-board This points to the worst of all worlds, a commercially funded, taxpayer bailed-out, tory run broadcaster.
      The tories have also looked at a 'sell-off', where, as usual, they take something we already own, and sell it to us, Thatcher style.

Even an old favourite of mine, Radio 4's Today programme (which you don't even need a licence for), I have dumped this programme for LBC and CZcams.

    Nick is misunderstanding the nature of nuclear deterrence, its not for the now or maybe tomorrow necessarily (but possibly); but it is an insurance policy for changes that may happen geopolitically in the 2030s, 2040s and 2050s in an increasingly unstable world that simply cannot be fully predicted. Iran, North Korea and Pakistan, all are nuclear armed or will be in the future, [Iran is not going to stop pursing this technology], as is China, and certainly the first three are unpredictable and potentially politically unstable. With global warming and increasing internal political instability, nuclear blackmail from some quarter may be real threat in the future if we gave up our capability.
    To retain the technology [rather than loosing it] and the UK's ability to operate it, which is cheap compared to vast armies, navy's or air forces we can no longer afford, is a sensible defence policy for the decades ahead and all the uncertainty that undoubtedly exits!!
    Sorry Nick, but you are wrong about this one!!
