Overcoming "SHAME" of Playing Warhammer | The EYE-OPENING Journey of Stephen Box

  • Wargamer's "shame" is an experience felt by millions of gamers who hide or cover the fact they play tabletop wargames or participate in the miniature painting hobby. It's an all-too-familiar call back to many of us who grew up in the '80s, '90s, and even onward. Being bullied or ridiculed by peers, and unfortunately, friends and even family at times.
In this poignant thought-provoking video, I (MWG Dave) interview Stephen Box of ‪@VanguardTactics‬ and delve into this phenomenon. As Stephen shares his own personal life experiences, he shows deep vulnerability, which relates to many of us wargamers. I travel back in time with him as he revisits the feelings and trauma he felt as a youth.
The reason why I feel Stephen is the "perfect" choice to bear this topic is that from a surface-level perspective, he symbolizes the ultimate strength and power of a human. He's a bodybuilder and a master of his mind. And in spite of this, even HE can feel the pain and hurt that accompanies shame and ridicule. No one is exempt from this experience, and it is a must-watch for anyone who's ever felt this. It normalizes the experience and serves as a love letter to anyone who feels alone in it.
It's also a fantastic video to share with anyone who wishes to understand this phenomenon and can help educate those who know very little about our community and the experiences that accompany it.
We, as a tabletop wargaming community, know and relate to this not so spoken of topic. We champion those who go through it and have suffered and STILL suffer from it. By talking about it and showing that it's a normal feeling, it helps to include those who may feel they have no one to talk to about it.
Leave your feelings and thoughts below about it. Have you been ridiculed for your hobby? Made fun of? Felt ashamed for it? You're not alone. You're at home here in this community, and we understand your pain and can relate to your experience.

It’s an absolute pleasure and an eye-opening experience for me to sit with you and discuss these topics. The hobby can be so much deeper than applying paint to plastic. For some, that’s what it’ll always be and there’s nothing inherently wrong with that. For others, it’s a lifeline. And then there’s every degree in between. I feel like we all have the capacity to experience any one of these feelings at any time in our lives. In my opinion, the one thing that remains consistent is a mindset of acceptance no matter how we choose to engage and you’ve been instrumental in demonstrating the more vulnerable side of that experience. That takes courage. Something our grim dark world could use more of. Thank YOU, for including me and us in your journey.

Stephen is a good dude, and it's cool to see him finally come out of his shell. At first he was very 'formal' and defensive, but now he's far more himself since he's met a lot of people in the Warhammer content creator space. He's realised that there's nothing wrong with just being yourself. It's been good to watch VT's growth on CZcams.

Both of you guys are real icons and people i aspire to be more like, every time i see either of you on a podcast video or an article i'll always watch listen or read because theres no hate or judgement just awesome happy vibes. Bravo to both of you. It's hard to talk about inner turmoil and the shame and pain of working through bullying and learning how to stand on your own two feet.
I've been playing for over 30 years at this point, since Rogue Trader, and was an Outrider for GW for about a decade, teaching people how to play, running demos, running tournaments, acting as con support staff. I've had the joy of people coming to me and telling me how they remember their first demo game with me and now they're collectors and players and have even gotten others into the hobby. I've even had podcasts and CZcams channels where I talked about 40k and other minis games. I'm so glad to see content creators like the two of you leading the way in the hobby now, you're bringing in new people and doing it the right way.
Thank you both for picking up the torch and making it burn brighter than I ever thought would be possible. Good job lads, you're much better then I ever was and I couldn't be more proud of what you've both accomplished and brought to the world.

I am writing this before the video premieres, as i am sure that once upon a time, all of us have gone through this. It may have occurred many years ago by this point to some of us, or quite literally as we speak to others. I am not aware how severe this situation was before the turning of the millennium, but, at least where i come from, and at a younger age, being ridiculed was the norm for me. I was not interested in many things my peers were by that point in junior high school (it was towards the end of the last year that it climaxed). Football was not my thing, i was playing basketball but i was not madly in love with it. I was not into trying to get a girlfriend, and i gotta admit i was chubby back then (hehe). So i turned my attention to warhammer and especially Gotrek and Felix, the books that, alongside my father, uncle and Miniwargaming brought me into the hobby. But painting minis and reading books was seen by many guys as...a sissy's hobby (could not find the proper term for the word). I still have the torn books and pages, and the broken minis from that time. Teachers were taking my side, but these dudes simply did not care, and quite a few girls supported them. I do not know if that whole part made me angry and bitter towards my peers (like an Iron Warrior, hehe) but it certainly made my mouth, soul and heart the Iron Cage for such unfortunate souls. Thankfully, i have found this community, where i can be me, even if not to the fullest due to restrictions i have at the moment. But i am simply free, to roam around the halls of this community, alone or with friends, chatting with with amazing people and even having the opportunity to write small stories of my own.
This is me just rambling around to be honest, so to get to the point, i know the pain, the fear, the shame of being a wargamer. And that is why people like you are my heroes. Dave being Kharn and Steve being Dante. Keep it up champions and let blood flow forevermore in the name of wargaming. See you on the fields of gore!

I am nearly 40, been doing the hobby on and off since i was around 12. And nowadays i happily tell people about my lovely sociable and fun hobby! People look questionable at me, at first but after i tell them more how much fun i have doing it. With the painting and the wonderful communty there is around Warhammer. They start to look jealous. Be Proud of your hobby. I know people who tell me they wish they could be like me, to find a fun hobby to hang around likeminded people. Deep inside they wish they were brave enough to play with adult toys.

I absolutely don't negate anyone else's experience, but I've never encountered such behaviour from anyone. In fact most people were either disinterested or showed appreciation for skill and effort even if it wasn't their cup of tea.
I've never felt shame for doing the hobby. Quite the opposite, in the world where hobby for millions means sitting on a couch and watching someone else do sports ours is something you can be rightfully proud of.

    • @robertomacari501
      @robertomacari501 Před 11 měsíci +2

I can relate to the shame aspect of the hobby. It’s strange though… don’t get me wrong but as a kid when I got into it, Warhammer was seen as a bit of an alternative game. I never played because of this and was only interested in painting. You walked into a GW and were hounded by “nerdy” “awkward” staff who basically tried to push items on to you with a bit too much enthusiasm haha. Honestly I’d say most parents hated this so denied their children getting involved. This plus the high price barrier for many families meant GW was an easy target for “normies” or people who could not afford the hobby. Was never personally bullied myself as a kid because I was a “normy” in the sense that I was athletic, confident and usually a centre of attention in my friend group or captained my sports teams. Yet I myself remember the stigma around GW and the embarrassment of carrying a Warhammer bag or being seen with a white dwarf. It caused me to take a 10+ year hiatus with the odd sneaky white dwarf in between. Even to this day (27yrs old) I still get a sense of awkwardness carrying a Warhammer bag through town. As Warhammer has slowly become more mainstream though this is disappearing.

That moment, when Dave told Stephen , "we have a spartan in our wargaming community!", was the moment where a herculean brother of strength assured and was fully proud of his herculean brother Stephen. Nor only that, but a moment where he told about the reality of his stand, one that has been a tough battle that seems to have no end, and it's beginning was not known. Yet, Dave made it clear that the legacy that Stephen has is, was, and will still be progressing to godhood in its totality! I love it, such a great moment of assurance and emotional acknowledgement!

I'm not a wargamer myself because I'm more into tabletop rpgs (started with D&D 3rd ed sort of 20 years ago) but I deeply understand what this video tries to bring out of our inner selves.
As I'm not a very sociable person (I can feign it well since i'm lucky enough to have got the skills but that's it) and even when i tried i couldn't integrate myself without feeling like i was killing my soul, I went from wanting to "be normal" to rejecting any compromise as "I am this and you can like or dislike it but don't bother me".
Being lucky enough having true friends on my side, I can surely state that i came out of my teens walking tall but recently i noticed something worriesome: trpgs became sort of trendy and i fear the community 'll become just like that of videogames. Gatekeeping, elitarian, toxic and totally not safe for the new entries and in general for those who seek refuge in it. As if there are "normal cool nerds" and "shamefull nerds" and a new division and exclusion will be born.
    I just say "beware".

Seeing people bridge a gap of the typical gamer (not that there is anything wrong with that) adds more culture to the game. At the end of the day this is a community driven hobby and the more types of people coming into the fold i think would be a great thing.

I'm trying to do the same thing Stephen is doing, for veterans at the local gaming store I work at.
I'm a veteran myself and I'm trying to create something that veterans in the area can have that doesn't focus on what's wrong with them and can give them a positive outlet, or even just something to do, when they come back from the service. That was my biggest issue when I came back; there was (and still is) nothing for us when we return that doesn't place an emphasis on all of the negatives of having served; the trauma, the injuries, the homelessness, the unemployment, the inability to fit in, all of that. It's soul crushing and I'm trying to get something going that allows fellow vets to feel like they have a place to go where they can escape from that, even if it's just for a few hours.

The community around this hobby is truly amazing and i've never come across anything like it before. I also left the hobby as a teenager beacuse i was ashamed of it. And now having rediscovered it as an adult, it's like i have rediscovered a key part of myself i didnt realise i had lost. You feel so connected to each and everyone in the hobby and its the amazing content creators like Stephen and Dave that make his happen. I can be sat alone, but watching one of their videos i feel like I am in a room among friends. Despite being in a small hobby group of just a few people you feel part of somethig much bigger and so special. Keep up the great work!

It’s so great seeing stories from others in the community. So many of us struggle with expressing what we love for fear of being shamed or ridiculed just for doing something we enjoy. It happened to me all through my childhood and I’m sure with so many others and it took me a while to be ok with sharing my love of all my hobbies and I still occasionally struggle with it. But it’s ok to be yourself! And the community has become so welcoming to people from all places. Thank you so much for sharing this!

The worst part is that a large part of that rejection takes place in our own brain. It is not so much the rejection by others that drives anxiety, but the fear of rejection. The moment you accept yourself, a burden is lifted and when you are confronted with those rare cases of rejection (most people are actually pretty cool) their insults cannot hurt you anymore.

I'm so happy that he has finally been able to be himself. It's all to common for people who look like he does and become a target for people to harass and mock for what he enjoys doing. People like him, Travis Willingham, Paul Wright, Mark Sinclair and others who openly talk about their love for dnd, Warhammer, and anything like it helps push it forward and show the world that the stereotype isn't what people expect and it's a hobby for everyone and there shouldn't be any shame for playing these. I hope and wish him all the best and to keep pushing and being the amazing teacher his is! Keep being who you are, the world is a better place for it.

This is by far the best warranting video I’ve ever watched. I had the exact same feelings growing up and loving Warhammer and it wasn’t until I became comfortable with myself that I found I could be open about a hobby that I love! I still find I come across people who try to make fun but I own it, show them what I do and explain it to them and I often find that most people would actually love to try it themselves! Thanks to both of you for being so open and real!

Keep doing what you’re doing Stephen!!

You durpy durps got me right in the feels! I can relate so well to the bullying and "shame," and it's such an amazing thing to know that those who have felt that way aren't alone. MWG and Vanguard tactics were huge inspirations to starting our own channel, so thank you for this amazing message and for all you do!

The shame comes from the fact that it's a perishable and indulgent pastime. However it's also relaxing, mentally stimulating, artistic and expressive. Other pastimes have some utilitarian use or carry a higher "market value" that convey higher social status. Gaming in general does not have the thousands of years of cultural heritage that hunting or athletics (for example) have so those activities are held in much higher esteem. Best advice one can give to fellow gamers is "don't devote your life to something you don't have the ability to make a living off of", which means, get yourself and your house in order and ensure your time is well invested in your work, your health and your family before you invest time into your gaming hobbies.

As someone in my early 40's who still struggles with talking about my hobbies because of fear of embarrassment and judgement, it really hits home. I have made an effort lately, and will casually make comments about painting and gaming though. Small steps!

You all are so valuable members of this community, and stories of dealing withmental health, both within and outside the hobby are invaluable.
As a person who has dealt with mental health issues, and helped others, it is paramount to support your fellow hobbyists, you never know when someone giving you a compliment, or simply giving you a pat on the back physically or proverbial, will literally save their lives.
So I want to say thank you, and everyone on your teams, that contribute so much to the hobby. You are all saints in my book

Hi guys, love to see this coming up and being spoken about, the more we do, the better it is for all!
I have always loved wargaming and have had friendships built from it. Whether it has been ignorance or arrogance, I haven't felt the pain of this harassment as badly, one of the lucky ones I guess. The problem I am now having that due to sight loss, I have lost these communities and really struggle to play and enjoy the games.
Going from a lucky one to an unlucky one has been hard, but I know as well as the dark side of persecution, there is also the light side of great communities that build great friendships through this hobby!
It is one I am deeply missing!
    Keep wargaming!!!

One of the best interviews i have seen. Its because of channels here on youtube dedicated to these hobbies a new generation have discovered them and helped nurture and grow the ever increasing community. Hearing celebrities talk about the hobby as well has helped boost the community to. Henry Cavil and his custodes. Even the Hollywood star opening up about D&D have made people feel less like they need to be in the shadows. It will be great to see the next generation of players learn, enjoy and grow. Thank you to the community. Lets keep the passion and joy going. ❤
