Learn how to best create a set list on your Nord Electro 6. There is no official “Song Mode” or “Set List” on this particular Nord keyboard. In this video, I provide you a tutorial/training on one good way to go about creating a set list with your Electro 6.

@@blovatt54 "Samples" Are sounds that are part of the synth engine. A program on the other hand collects and stores information from the Organ, Piano and Synth engine all at the same time. On any given program, you can switch samples out and audition them. However, they won't save to the program unless you click the red store button. You may want to consider enrolling in the online course I have for this if you want to learn things from A to Z. Also consider checking out the Nord Sound Manager to go over the basics of how things work in the Nord world. czcams.com/video/4Z3YT7T9XD0/video.html. So glad it was helpful! Ya, I needed something for my gigs when I play with the Electro 6 and I'm not required to play key bass (which means I don't bring the Stage 3 along for the ride). Needed a setlist for the Electro and I knew I wasn't alone. Granted, it's not a slick as the one on the Stage 3, but it gets the job done. 🎹🤙🏼

"Set lists" is the biggest missing feature on the Electro 6 that people are sometimes critical about when they compare this to the Electro 5. However, the program list does just fine for most circumstances. I've almost always used the standard program list for my gigs. But then again, I generally only switch between a handful of settings on any given gig.

Synth style (no weight) - for the Lead A1. Short keys
Semi-weighted waterfall (Nord Wave 2, Electro 6, NS3 Compact). Short keys
Semi-Weighted waterfall with triple sensor. (Nord Stage 4 73 Compact) Short keys
Hammer Action fully weighted (no triple sensor) NS3 88, Electro 6 73 Long Keys
Hammer Action Portable (NS3 76). Long keys, fully weighted, but really "think" action - harder to play than any other Nord board. Long Keys
Hammer Action fully weighted and triple sensor (Nord Piano 5, Nord Stage 4) Long keys
Grand Action fully weighted and triple sensor (Nord Grand - made by Kawaii). Long keys

Hopefully I can keep this thing and really dig it. Not even sure if I want to use live or just studio, but excited to give this a long look. I can see shortcomings vs my live Korg PA4X, including a screen shot on what instruments are in the 4 slots, and other stuff.

The Electro is approachable and if you look at the manual and like to experiment, you can work your way through it without the pro training. I still remember my first Electro 3 back in the day. Yes, Mark, you're doing a great service. Appreciate your tutorials for Electro 6! I'm very visual-oriented and learn better by watching these demonstrations than just reading the Manual.
I ran into some problems, not really sure of what I was doing, and accidentally erased all the Manufacturer's built-in sounds. I tried to restore everything, but I noticed that a number of pianos and other items did not come back, they were missing. Also, the downloads from the Nord library (from the CD and online) don't light up ("activate") on my computer when I try to download them to the keyboard. Please discuss these issues in a video. Thank you so much!
Hello @Pachecure. You might need to work with someone directly on this. Maybe the place you bought it from can advise if they have someone on staff who knows. Did you already attempt a full factory restore? Keep in mind that a factory restore will erase all your custom sounds if you've created any. The video for that is here: czcams.com/video/vM1wMCLRMHA/video.html. And one other trick if your factory restore isn't working is to select first select "Format" under the "File" menu of the Nord Sound Manager application once you connect it to your board. You can do that first, then attempt a full factory restore. Let us know if any of this helps.

@user-mg7dp8hi1h Ralf, thanks for your comment and question. I'm not exactly sure I understand the question. Feel free to include more detail. In the meantime, I'll provide you with some general things about MIDI as it relates to the Nord Electro 6.
1) To change a program on your Nord Electro 6 from an external source, this can only be done using the "Global" MIDI channel. In addition, you have to allow program changes in the system settings so the keyboard can receive program changes. Also, Nord uses a more advanced way to select programs requiring MSB, LSB, and the program change command as well. Not all software/devices can do this. Look in the manual for more details about changing a program on your Nord Electro 6 via MIDI.
2) If you are interested in having the Nord Electro 6 use MIDI to make program/patch changes to external software or devices, this is possible, but you cannot direct it to a specific program number. This is slightly more useful when going from one Nord Keyboard to another, perhaps, and much less valuable when going from a Nord keyboard to a piece of software or another keyboard from another manufacturer. I suppose you could get a MIDI translator box to potentially translate the program change coming out to be interpreted correctly (and specifically) to the device that is to receive it. However, this is a lot of extra work and requires some technical skills, not to mention a 3rd party box/software to do the translation. Instead, it's far easier to have the Electro 6 receive a program change rather than use it to send a program change. Note that for the Nord Stage 3 and Stage 4 products those can easily send program changes to a specific number upon load. They have a much more robust MIDI implementation, so this is very feasible for a Stage line, just not the Electro, Piano, Lead, Grand, or Wave line of Nord keyboards.
3) All program changes for either sending or receiving require the use of the Global MIDI channel, and the MIDI channel number must match that of the external device/software.
Hope this helps get you started! Feel free to further refine your question if I misunderstood what you were asking.
Super useful video. I’ve enjoyed several of your others. I just got a Nord 6D and was wondering how to address making a set list. 50 years ago, my keyboard was a Farfisa combo compact deluxe through a’68 Fender Bassman. I’m amazed at how keyboard technology has advanced. These stage pianos are so versatile.

Thanks Mark....very helpful creating set list....found out each change needs to be checked for transpose, cause on my E673 I had to change to find middle C balance...kind of curious why its not in tune..still learning that feature, maybe im doing something wrong...but i had to change each new set and save a new tune to middle C it was off +1
Thanks, Craig! Did you check under the "Global Transpose" option under the system settings (on the 4th screen) in your Nord Electro 6 settings? Ideally, this should be set to zero when you make your set lists. Let me know if you find out what's going on.

Hello @onaonlinemusicschool9137 I think what you are asking is if it's possible to play multiple sounds from the same engine on a given side of a split. If that's the case, this is not possible. With the Electro 6, you have 3 sound engines only (Organ, Piano and Synth). Once you use one sound enge (regardless of whether you are using a split or not), you cannot use that same engine again for any additional sounds.
*So for example, you can do this:*
Left Split: Bass sample from the Synth Engine
Right Split: Layer a Piano and an organ.
*But you can't do this:*
Left Split Bass sample
Right Split Piano and a flute layer. (You can't have a flute on the right side because you already used the synth engine to supply the bass sample.)
I hope that makes sense - if not, please ask your question another way.
Thank you. Just bought a new Stage 3 but even so, most educational in that I had not thought about shift page for bank navigation. My “new” Stage 3 came with OS 1.4 when the latest is 2.1. And it does not have Dyno1 and Dyno2 printed on it even though that is shown in the on line manual. How new is new? I mention this for other potential purchasers to consider. Still a great keyboard. I am off to revisit your stage 3 synth vids now.
Thank you for your comment suelikesspurs. Congrats on your purchase too. Yes, the shift key is a nice surprise on the Nord Electro 6. However, on the Nord Stage 3 holding shift and clicking Page Up/Down will go into different modes - so doesn't work the same as on the Nord Electro 6. Enjoy the videos on the channel. Thanks for posting these - they've been very valuable for helping me to learn the electro. Do you have a video for splitting the keyboard using the same kinds of sounds? (For example, splitting with the bottom half being a grand piano and the top half being an electric piano). I'm not sure how to do this while also having control over the octaves for both of the splits, being that they are running from the same part of the keyboard. Hopefully that makes sense. Thanks!
Hello @taileron unfortunately, you can have only a single sound for each of the engines at one time. It’s impossible to split the keyboard in a way that allows two distinct pianos from either side of the split. This applies to the synth as well. The organ on the other hand, does have a “Dual Organ” mode enabling two different drawbar settings for each side while sharing the same effects.
To provide the functionality you are looking for, you’d need to consider the Nord Piano 5 (but you would lose the organ) or the Nord Stage 2, 3, or 4 where each of these allow for two engines to be used at the same time, one for either side of the split. With the NS4, you’d have up to 3 synths that can be assigned at the same time. I realize too that the budget for these other boards mentioned is yet another potential consideration leaving you to decide if the upgrade in investment is worth the features provided.

Hi Marc, thanks for sharing. Suppositie you have two song to witch you assigned the same piano. Can they have different effects (reverb, chorus) stored to the song?
Hi Gert Baas. So a program stores the selected piano and all the effects. You can use a selected piano in multiple programs each having its own effects. So, if you want to use the same piano but having various effects settings, you'd have to create a program for each. It works like this:
A "song" is comprised of one or more programs - although, in the case of the Nord Electro 6, there is no separate "song" area per se. They are all just programs organized however you'd like them to be.
A program stores the selected organ, piano, and synth along with any effects.
A given piano can be used in multiple programs
Said another way: If you have Song A that uses the Italian Grand sample with a delay, you'd store that as Program A1. If you have Song B that uses the same Italian Grand sample but this time with no delay and more reverb, you'd have to create that as "Program A2" and so on. Hope that helps!

Great idea there, but it is still fairly limited in comparison with the Electro 5. You get eight letters (Q-Z) and four parts per letter (11-14, 21-24, 31-34 and 41-44). This gives you a maximum of 32 songs. If you are in more than one band, or even if you have more than one set list, you run out of spaces very quickly. I appreciate that you are just trying to give us a workaround, but I think that Nord made a huge mistake in dropping the setlist feature from the Electro 5.
Hi Frank. Yes, I tend to agree that it was a mistake dropping the dedicated setlist feature and many have said as much in the forums as well. Those that want a more extensive playlist capability are going to have to resort to other methods such as software driven from a computer (like MainStage 3) or use another device to drive program changes via a list (which is presumably a LOT more work both before the gig to set up and potentially even during it). And the video here is an attempt to make lemonade out of lemons :) With so many notable improvements in the Nord Electro 6 over previous Electros, people are left scratching their head over why this feature was essentially removed. For some, it won't matter, for others it could be a deal-breaker. Thanks for your comment!
First off all that's a great video. I have an E6D in transit and will follow this to a tee. A couple of comments: From Q-Z is ten, not eight letters. So religiously following this method means 40 songs. However for me, perhaps half my songs in a given set only use one sound. What's to stop me from putting 2-3 songs into one letter if they are single sound songs? So ten times 4 = 40 songs, and if I need even more (which I never do) put several songs into the 4 parts of one letter.

Hello @Jim Herrmann Thanks for your comment and question! To use the Nord Sound Manager, it's always done via a computer or laptop using Windows or Macintosh operating systems. This is connected via USB between the keyboard and the computer. The keyboard comes with the cord you need to do it; however, the cord is standard. Unfortunately, Nord keyboards don't work with Pen drives for storage or transfer for anything. Of course, you could "archive" your favorite programs and samples on your Pen drive for safekeeping, but you won't be using the pen drive to make any actual connections to the keyboard - it's all done directly via a computer.

So, calibrating your volume levels boils down to mixing the 3 volumes together for each engine to get the right "mix." You can get a DB meter to help with this to determine the overall volume of each program and adjust accordingly. It’s very difficult to change programs especially when you are playing solo or a main riff in a band. Is there any possibility to change programs (midi) with your legs like guitar players use pedal board.

Hello! If I want to save each song using a chord transpose function. Great video!
Hello @Hanán. Yes, you can save your programs with their own unique transposition settings for each. In other words, you could have one sound saved with a +2 transposition. Then you can immediately switch to another sound that has -5 transposition. Transposition settings can be stored at the program level (which is ideal). But, you can also adjust your keyboard globally as well. Let's say you were playing with a trumpet player and you wanted to use the trumpet players music. You could set your entire keyboard -2 in the global settings. At that point forward, all sounds are calibrated to play at -2. Now, if you originally had a program set to play at +4, then the settings BLEND. In other words, the +4 will be reduced by 2 and you get a net effect of a +2. So the bottom line is you can transpose either globally for all programs at once or individually program by program as needed.
Just know that if you've set your global settings for a session, your previously saved programs with any kind of individual transposition settings will adjust with the global settings and the blend of the two will provide a net result. For a final example, if you set your global transposition to +2 and your individual program is set to use a -2, then you wouldn't be transposing anything at all! The two cancel each other out.

First off thank you for your time and efforts sharing your knowledge with us. I just purchased and am now waiting for my new Nord Electro 6D 73 keyboard. I have a question that is, I'm sure, really simple for you but I can't find any solid information on it. After doing all the setup as listed for the organ on your "whiter shade of pale" how do I save it? I've asked this on the Nord forum and received an "oh sure" response but nothing concrete as to how.

Thanks William. Yes, the Nord Electro 6 course currently has a video run time of 6.6 hours and counting. We go over every detail including the nitty gritty of the organ and its many features along with the program area, the Nord sound manager application, all the effects, pedal options, back panel jacks - everything. You can think of this as going through the entire manual but in video format from a musician's perspective.
This is invaluable. Just bought an Electro 6D and am going down the Rabbit hole! Question: When you copy over a program, does it reference the original samples, or duplicate those as well? Just a consideration since there really isn't a ton of memory. Thanks!

Thanks so much. My new E6D arrived today and I've already built my main setlist. One question: is there a way to make a B3 program where the drawbar settings are manual/custom?
@howardrosenberg4749 Hey Howard! Congrats on your new E6D and welcome to the club! You may have already figured this out by now but essentially you can experiment with the following procedure which will enable you to save a custom program.
1) Navigate to a blank program at the end of the list (use the program knob until you get to an "untitled' program)
2) Turn on the organ engine
3) Adjust drawbars and any/all settings.
4) While holding the "shift" button, click on the red "Store" button. This will allow you to name and save your program.
5) Push and hold the buttons corresponding to the display for letters while turning the program knob. By doing that combination, you'll be able to name the program.
After successfully saving your own custom program, every time you come to that program, the drawbars will be stored for you.
If you want to change things from there, you can make your change and then just push the store button twice to lock in your new settings on that same program.
* Note that you have a "Preset" button below your drawbars allowing you to toggle between two different drawbar settings per program.

Hi Marc. I’ve just bought an electro 6D 73 and am having lots of fun with it. I’m trying to see if I could make a set list where the midi settings change as you change patch? So for example playing one patch with all three sections playing on the Nord (layered) and then say switch to another patch where the piano is played on an external keyboard but the Nord is split between two other sounds.
I’m assuming you can’t double up the synth section sounds playing different sounds?

Hello, @chris gaskell Great questions here.
1) So, you can set each program up to be ready to play all 3 layers or you can set it up to take advantage of an external keyboard controller in a split as you described. As you switch from program to program, the MIDI config is automatically updated on the Electro 6. So, no additional work is needed from a MIDI standpoint. If you can manage to change the program on the Electro 6 from an external MIDI source, all the Nord-specific configuration settings come along for the ride automatically (keyboard split, External to Low, etc.). A program like Apple's MainStage could do the switching for you and there are numerous programs for IOS that can also switch programs. Keyboard controllers can also switch from program to program.
2) Unfortunately you cannot double the synth section at all even if you use an external keyboard to attempt to do that. You'd have to get a Stage 3 or Wave 2 if you want to double up on your synth sounds. The Wave 2 can play 4 at a time. You could also consider incorporating a computer to supplement your synth sounds controlled by the Electro or another keyboard. But using a laptop for this is a whole other setup of course and requires perhaps a bunch of stuff to learn (and worry about on a gig).

Great to hear I can assign the piano part of the electro to an external keyboard and then change programs to quickly go back to it playing all parts layered up back in the electro. I think so far I’ve only had the electro running in global mode where it’s just a mirror on my other keyboard.

Update..... for some reason Keyboard came from the factory +1 on regular transpose and -1 on global transpose so I switch them back to both to none…
That changed everything…
Took me a while to figure it out
Still odd that in some cases it only transpose a full step and not a half step unless you use global
transpose...or unless I’m doing something wrong 😀

FYI: L'Electro 6 peut déjà jouer du piano et des cordes superposées sans avoir besoin de l'ordinateur. Je suppose que vous le savez et que vous demandez à créer deux sons superposés dans un seul échantillon.
Donc, si vous voulez combiner deux sons (en couches) en même temps qui joueront comme un seul échantillon, vous devrez les enregistrer dans l'ordinateur de manière à ce que vous entendiez les deux sons en même temps pour chaque échantillon. Remarque. Ensuite, vous pouvez les exporter en tant qu'échantillon à une seule couche pour les utiliser dans le Nord Sample Editor. Enfin, vous pouvez les assigner à votre clavier.
Je vous recommande de consulter le cours gratuit que j'ai appelé "Maîtriser l'éditeur d'échantillons du Nord" pour lequel j'ai récemment créé des sous-titres en français !

Hey Mark great job, very useful! But what if I have two sounds playing at the same time ? For example piano and pad . Can I store two sounds together or maybe I have to add the other engine (example synth.) in a second time ? Just curious, thank you in advance !
Hello Jazzmatazz (great CZcams name by the way). So, the programs store all settings for all 3 sound engines at the same time. So you can have 1, 2 or 3 sounds engines on and save that with a program. Then at any point during the performance, you can independently turn off (and on) each of these sound engines without having to switch from one program to another. You only need to switch from one program to another if your song uses two different types of pianos (let's say a grand piano on one part of the song and an electric piano on another part of the song). But if you have a song that uses the piano for the verses and strings for the chorus, for example, you can simply turn these engines on and off as needed by double-clicking the "KBD Zone" buttons for a given engine. Hope that answers the question - it was a good one.

@@carlopaulflatow6867 You can drag sounds from your desktop computer directly into the Nord Sound Manager, and it will put them where it wants (in the next available slot) or you can designate where they go one by one. You can rename sounds by "right-clicking" on the program directly and you'll have a chance to rename and recategorize them there. Don't forget in order to drag sounds around, it's best to make sure the "Organize" button at the top is activated.

I'm thinking of getting electro 6. Could you tell me if it is capable of layering two independent sounds? What I want to achieve is pads playing in the background in the key of C major and then play piano over it without affecting the pads. Is this possible? I know it is with the use of 2 panels on stage 3 but can this be achieved on electro 6?

Hi Robert. Thanks for your comment and question here. This is one of the questions that seems to come up from time to time. The Electro has 3 independent sound engines (Organ, Piano and Sample/Synth). All 3 can play at the same time in either a layered capacity or as splits across the keyboard (with up to 3 zones). So, that means that the piano (from the piano engine) can easily play layered with your pad (from the sample/synth engine). Now, as a layer, the same notes will be played from each engine, and they will definitely sound at the same time.
Now what you can't do with the Electro, is have two layers from the same sound engine. In other words, you couldn't have a flute sample playing along with a pad sample. You cant;t layer two pianos and you can't layer two organs. But you can layer one piano, one organ, and one sample at the same time where all 3 are playing at once. For some, however, the ability to only have one sample sounding at one time is not enough. For example, they want to have a bass sample in the left hand and I roaring synth lead in the right. Well, the Electro can't do that and you'd need to consider another keyboard like the Stage 3 or the upcoming Nord Wave 2. But with the Wave 2, it doesn't have a piano or organ engine. So, lots to consider here! At some point soon, I may have a video that compares the entire Nord family of available instruments because it can be a bit overwhelming when you first enter the world of Nord - I'm still learning myself!
@@MyKeysToMusic Thank you for your prompt reply and useful information but my question was if I can play pads from the sample engine in an infinite loop eg. in a key of C and then play piano from the piano engine on top of/without affecting the pads. Thanks to your explanation of how to use the Unarchiver (I have a Mac) I was able to convert the the downloaded restore file to the right Zip format and then see it on the Mac. The only slight snag was that the sounds in the bank on the backup were not in the same order as the sounds on my Electro but it didn't take long to work out which was the missing one and restore it. I'm very grateful for your help. Keep up your great work! Harry

Thanks for the great tutorial. Is there a way to copy an exact patch from one program to another? For example, I have a program with piano & bass patches exactly how I want. I'd like to copy one of the preset B3 organs to this program while retaining my piano & bass patches.
HI J Ferris. So, the easiest way to do this would be to select "Store As" to save a duplicate copy of the original program to a new location. You can also load up the Nord Sound Manager and right click on the program to display an option duplicate it that way too. Hope that helps get you started!

Example: Destination program contains piano & synth voices & I want to copy a preset organ from another program & not disturb the piano & synth. If I copy or duplicate then all 3 voices will be overwritten.

Hi, if I want in a verse a split keyboard with bass and piano, in chorus split bass and string , and in bridge split bass and synth? Can I do this?
@taio.99_music Hello Ottavio! Thanks for your question. Out of the box, I'm sorry to report this is not possible with the Nord Electro 6. You'll have to consider a Stage model to get this functionality natively. The main reason for this is the fact that the Electro has a single sample/synth engine that can generate a single sound at a time. So, once you assign a bass, you cannot have strings or synth. Yes, it is possible for bass and piano with no problem because the piano is a dedicated engine. You can also mix the organ with the synth.
What some people do to get around this is they will sample a bass guitar and assign that to the left and then, in that same sample, assign strings or a synth on the right. This will accomplish the split but when you use a sample like this, it doesn't have the same expression/quality you would get compared to using the native engines directly.
A Nord Stage 3, on the other hand, can play up to two synths at the same time with or without splits, and a Stage 4 can play up to 3 synths at the same time with or without splits.
So, if we go back to your original question about the splits, you explained all happening in a single song; it would work like this on the Nord Stage 4:
Verse: Bass on the left, Piano on the Right (assign to Scene 1)
Chorus: Bass on the left, Strings on the right (assign to Scene 2)
Bridge: Bass on the left, ynth on the right. (stay in scene 2 and push layer 1 and 3 on the synth to hear the bass and the synth)
Hope that helps clarify things. I think the number one reason people trade their Electro for a Stage is that they absolutely have to have a bass sound on the left while at the same time a sample/synth sound on the right (which is entirely understandable).

Pourquoi sur Q12 apparaissent un piano et des violons alors que tu n’as programmé que des violons avec le nord sound manager ?
Lorsque j'ai initialement créé Q12 plus tôt dans la vidéo, j'ai dupliqué un programme appelé "Royal Strings" qui comprenait à la fois un piano (Royal Grand 3D) ainsi qu'un son de cordes programmé pour jouer en tant que couche.
C'est pourquoi, lorsque nous avons examiné les détails plus loin dans la vidéo, il était préprogrammé avec le piano et les moteurs de cordes activés.
Buongiorno, vorrei fare una piccola critica. La nord electro 6D 73 ti da poca memoria ha disposizione per scaricare altri suoni ( programmi ). Mi chiedo: perchè la casa Nord non costruisce delle schede opzionali di memorie da installare nella tastiera per avere maggiore memoria. Esempio: la casa yamaha per la mox f6 ha costruito varie memorie esterne da installare nella tastiera. Mi scuso per la critica. Buona Musica.!
