- We took one final ride on Catastrophe Canyon, part of the Studio Backlot Tour at Walt Disney World's Hollywood Studios!
Catastrophe Canyon opened with the park on May 1, 1989 and closed on September 27th, 2014.
The feels of this closing down are overwhelming.
Every time I went to Disney World, we always went here. I loved all the effects, and this is really what got me into looking at different effects in film.
R.I.P, Catastrophe Canyon.
While I can say that I'm definitely still not 100% behind closing it, you can feel the entire attraction's kinda gutted to a corpse by this point. What was once the bulk of the experience with a personal narration depending upon what guide you got has kinda been reduced to a 30 minute tram ride with a phoned in pre-recorded narration which removes all kind of investment in it. I don't want to see it go, as it really still could have been utilized well if they just invested a bit of time into it and honestly Catastrophe Canyon is still very cool, but I guess if it had been in this state since about 2011 I can't say I'm not surprised. Maybe it's for the best, maybe not, but it feels like we lost the last bit of Disney Hollywood Studios's old feel.
Tons of memories
i am so happy to say that even though it's cars themed now this is STILL alive and well in Disney Studios Paris!! :D
Omg I rode this in august 1989 for the first time. And I JUST rode it last Friday on my vacation from the uk. I had no idea it was closing a few days after. Sad.
Noooooo! This is my favorite ride!
I remember riding this when I went to Disney World for the first time in 2008! I was 7, and this traumatized me!
Watching this after splash mountain closed here. quickly realizing there's generations of forgotten rides that were icons for a lot of people
That was was of my all-time favorite rides! Sorry to see it go.
Just go to universal
sonoma robloxian
I did, but it turns out King Kong, the Alfred Hitchcock exhibit and Back to the Future weren't there anymore. And they were some of my favorites, too!
kingdomofchrissmith Their currently in the works of making another king kong ride, but not just a ride, a whole area! (just a rumor)
god dammit...this was my favorite ride as a kid....
Holy shit that's alot of water
I love this part of the ride I was also apart of the special effects show to which was neat. (Got water dumped on me!)
I'm actually ok with this ride shutting down but still, it's sad to see one of the original rides go. But, I hope that they keep the villain exhibit you see at the end of the tour and put it where the American Idol Experience used to be. That by far was my favorite part of the entire tour. RIP Backlot Tour 1989-2014
The got rid of the villain part at the end like 2-3 months ago. And I agree with you
No! That sucks! They should of kept it and put it elsewhere! :(
they taken my childhood away
I've been to disneyworld before every part of it
This ride looks amazing, sad I was never on it. Well I wish I could know u more catastrophe canyons :(
what's up with theme parks and closing good rides?!
I remember this ride, I had the opportunity to see it and experience it before it closed. Although I thought that the truck was supposed to fall before our eyes, that's how I remember it, it's still a great attraction. It really deserved it's name.
it closed a few days before i went D;
Oh nooo! They are closing it?! It looks super cool!
In Paris: Oh this ride can stay for another 50 years or so, maybe we'll give it new paint in 10.
You were almost right lol. 6 years later and they have closed it for a new retheme lol
Dammit. I never knew they shut down! They are shutting down all the good rides and replacing it with freaking FROZEN 😤
I believe that catastrophe canyon is being replaced by Star Wars Land
ATR oh oops i got mistaken, it is being replaced by star wars land. god dammit does everything is disney have to be everything related to star wars?it sucks.
I remember the last time my grandparents took me to disney land with my brother, I saw the truck for catastrophe canyon and immediately knew I had to see it. (This was back when the truck was a worn out White Freightliner WFC12064T and not a rebadged Peterbilt). I never got to ride it again, by I will always remember it.
I remember this attraction although the Catastrophe Canyon portion was kinda like an outdoor version of the Earthquake ride at Universal Studios Orlando (now extinct). The tour was great though taking you through multiple movie and TV show sets such as Empty Nest and The Golden Girls
So many things have closed!!
To a 12 yo me in 1989 this was so cool.
It is an amazing ride :)
I love this ride I'm real sad about it. Why do you have to do this to me Disney world!!!
Its a shame they close it, its so awesome to ride
It closed in America but it's still open in Walt Disny Studio of Paris !
Anyone else think of the RCT3 ride event? ;)
Adam brought me here too, too bad that this can't be reused as a star wars attraction that's going to be there anyways, maybe as Mos Eisley Space port or a Tuskan Raider attraction, it would work in almost any Tattoine setting but it seemed like most of it was already destroyed s there wouldn't be much to work with... :(
The female guide's voice says it will take 3 1/2 minutes to reset the sequence for the next shuttle. Therefore, this was not the "last ride ever".
I was on the last ride :,( sad
Didn't the truck tip over?
TBH the Catastrophe Canyon bit was the best part and that only lasted a few minutes, the rest was driving about looking at old film props. Nice ride but about time they upgraded to something new.
Why are they closing this ride!?
I went on this just over a month ago....didn't realise it was closing...RIP
dat rainbow
OMG i went on that ride back in 2009 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Reason to make way for an orchestral facility or Toy Story land
I went there in 2013 I didn't know that is would close 😢😢😢😢😢😢
They told my mom that this ride was fine for a 3 year old. It was traumatizing.
I've been to that
While I did enjoy this ride many times, seeing this video you can see that even for the very last ride it's not even packed. I bet Maelstrom will get a bigger send off than this.
As much as I hate seeing the classic attractions go, change is a good thing when it comes to Disney attractions.
Now do I say "first" or not...? Nah. I'll let someone else have the honours.
This ride had me all fucked up when I was 7 yrs old! I was asking my parents if it was real. 😩😩😩
WHYYYY would they close this. the whole point of the theme park is to be like a Hollywood movie set. or like a studio. hence the name Hollywood studios. I hope that they put something similar in to replace it. come on disney. seriously?
+Jessica Dohme star wars/toy story land coming soon to that set near you
Almost identical to the cars tram ride in Disney land Paris even the set looks almost the same
I believe that somethings are completely true. They're making room for Star Wars Land.
I'm happy the closed this part. It was SO ANNOYING!
Why is this ride closing??
+Misty Wolves they are making room for toy story and star wars land
Why are they closing it? Or have they not announced it yet?
skeleton jam Yeah. I know why they're closing Maelstrom (Frozen attraction, goody,) but THIS?! I FUCKING LOVE THIS RIDE!!!
I think they are adding additional land to Pixar land or Star Wars land
The water pouring down at 1:30 looks SO FUN! Can people actually get wet on here? If so... It would be SO FUN!
What's the point of this ride..?
To learn how movies and tv is made in different aspects. The park was built to be a partial actual movie studio.
Was that a recording? Or ws the tour guide giving that speil?
They got rid of the live tour guides a few years ago.
Wow, I was actually supposed to go to that attraction when I worked there. Went to the Wilderness Lodge instead.
At 1:41, you can see the end of the rainbow. :) :D
Should have been 30 years
I can see toy story in its place
This is like the worst ride ever it’s just a train getting set on fire then water blows it out
It's not a ride, it's a practical effects demonstration.
I wonder why Cali has a drought
In Florida not California.
Yeahhh, the USH Studio Tour this is not...
why is it closing
Hot take. Looks boring. Esp compared to universal studios hollywood's bart on studio tour.
42nd like 14th comment
I've never been on this nor have I ever hear of it? If I'm being honest it doesn't look too interesting in my opinion. All it did was have water go everywhere and show you fire (also maybe it shook the ride I couldn't tell). I'm okay with losing it, besides it went away to make room for galaxy's edge which looks pretty good from what I can tell.

Take out Lights Motors action not this
+olinman44 Yeah, screw that attraction!! This one must stay! DON'T DO IT!
+olinman44 they are, both are going for star wars/ toy story land
SERIOUSLY. THAT IS PURE BULLCRAP. I loved the Catastrophe Canyon part of the Backlot Tour. Freaking Star Wars?! Disney is becoming Smike, the FNAF youtuber. Disney is practically milking the crap out of SW. >:(
