    I actually paid resale for these because at this point the OGs in decent shape is out of my price range and I’m pretty impressed with them. The things that bother me most are definitely the toe box and the swoosh size. Really just two things they need to get right. Unfortunately I feel like Jordan brand will just copy and paste all the OG colorways onto this silhouette. I’d really like to see them do different shapes based on which factory the shoe came out of in 85 but I may be asking too much haha

    • @firedemon2166
      @firedemon2166 Před 2 lety +1

      Isn’t different shapes based on the 85 basically what the OG’s we have now are, and the original 85’s had that style swoosh while the toe box differed from the different factory’s back then

  • @delphium

    Great in-depth comparison. I do think that the “off-ness” of the Neutrals is they look way too new when everyone is used to seeing the older Naturals and has that bias

  • @allen.t
    @allen.t Před 3 lety +5

    I just want to start off by saying this review is extremely informative and well done. Now for the shoe itself I am pretty sure Nike purposely didn’t make the shoe 1:1 and obviously I cant get a factual reason why, but my guess would be is to keep the OG’s sought after. I am 100% sure Nike could EASILY replicate the shoe 1:1 if they wanted to. Things I wish the retro pair did 1:1 is the overall appearance of the shoe down to the same size check, same painted collars, printed wings logo, and toe box shape while making it more comfortable to wear.
    TLDR: Nike didn’t make it exactly the same on purpose and definitely could if they wanted to. I wish overall appearance was the same but having optimized materials for comfort.

  • @aidanholloran3055
    @aidanholloran3055 Před 3 lety +4

    I found that when I stained the retros in coffee for about a day it actually makes the embossing of the wings logo far less deep and prominent so that’s a good way to give the white leather a warmer tone and make the wings logo closer to the OG

    I wore mine for two weeks straight and that was barely enough to start creasing the toebox. My two positives are that the insoles break in nicely, and that the back doesn’t crease down immediately like most new 1s do.

    • @CaliKiid714
      @CaliKiid714 Před 3 lety +3

      I will say as far as leather quality, it’s a pretty decent cowhide leather. I have some super limited Old Skools a boutique did back in 2014 with a full cowhide upper, and these are almost as good as those. The finish is kinda whack tho, makes it look like that default plasticky Nike leather.

    Fun fact: Nike started using “cool” and “neutral’ grey on most pairs and have only used “natural” grey on literally a handful ✋🏽 of shoes in recent years. They all differ but natural and neutral only have a slightly different tone one is a hint more yellow but “natural” grey is much darker than the others. Natural grey is basically regular grey with a touch of white.

  • @manupasta
    @manupasta Před 3 lety +8

    Nike will never give us 1:1 replica of originals because they want to give us a reason to buy the next retro release. Jordan 1’s being able to wear them for so long, Nike purposely doesn’t want to oversaturate the OG 1 market. If we get the perfect iteration, we will never buy the future release, we wouldn’t need to!

    Is Your 1985 pair 100% unworn?
    I guess we should expect a breaking in period for these real leather old school Jordan's. The new leather needs stretching. As You mentioned regarding the airship banned they'll look nicer well worn. The check material could be the same? Maybe that's what happens over time to the grey checks they dry out & get that sand paper feel? If You look at the Google photo of Jordan sitting on the bench in a silver track suit in 1985 You can see his pair looks just like the new release shape wise..

To back track last week nice kicks Twitter posted a picture of a dunk collection and in the collection there was an 85 Chicago Jordan 1 with tags that was DS, but the shoe did not look aged at all, no cracked leather collar, no oxidized yellow midsole and I said I wonder if that’s an unreleased pair? Now reading the sample tag and the color way makes me wonder could Nike and Jordan be hinting at releasing a Chicago 1 with the 85 cut?

    feel like nike just doesn't care this much about the super purist original 85 details outside of some things like height and overall shape. they might also not be able to get access to the originals to copy it especially since they vary a lot. stuff like the laces and sock liner r probably changed for quality/lasting longer. the one thing i wish they did get right is the original '85 swoosh that just fucking dies after aging for a while.
    maybe after this retro nike will start making regular aj1 high's actually high instead of practically the same as mids

      Since they're white, it would be pretty easy I imagine to age these using UV light either from the sun near a window or a UV lamp.

      @@SplendorSolis Ohh right, I was aware that ages things but didn't realize it causes yellowing, good to keep in the back of my mind!

    Go over the suede swoosh and ankle collars with some coconut oil, and you'll get the color of the OG's

    OG 85's are built like a tank, obvious by how they are still around 37 years later. The retros today will never last 37 years especially if they are worn like we wore the 85s years ago
