Can the 2019 Volvo S60 Take on the Best From Germany? | Edmunds

  • Edmunds Senior Reviews Editor Mark Takahashi is a big fan of the sporty luxury sedan class that has been dominated by BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz. He's also been impressed by Volvo's recent renaissance. At long last, the two have come together with the all-new 2019 Volvo S60 that has the performance, style and smarts to challenge the Germans.
    Q: How much does the 2019 Volvo S60 cost?
    A: Prices start at $36,795 for the T5 Momentum and climb to over $56,000 for the T8 Inscription.
    Q: What kind of engines are available?
    A: The base T5 has a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 250 horsepower. The 316-hp T6 uses an engine that's both turbocharged and supercharged. The T8 adds a plug-in hybrid electric system for a combined output of 400 hp and an electric-only driving range of 21 miles.
    Q: Which one should I get?
    A: The T5 engine will likely be an excellent choice for the majority of drivers, and the base Momentum trim is packed with features. If you have a penchant for performance, get the T6 R-Design. We'd avoid the pricey T8 engine for its weird braking behavior.
    Q: What are its main competitors?
    The BMW 3 Series, the Audi A4 and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

    I have a 2014 S60 R and I bought this car simply because I’ve heard nothing but great things from Volvo. Test drove it and I absolutely fell in love. It’s been 2 years now and the car is still unbelievably fun to drive. I never get tired of looking at my car and driving it. Every time I step into it it’s very exciting.
    After seeing this new design I want it now

    After what Ford did to Volvo and GM did to Saab I gave up on Swedish auto brands. Having owned examples of each brand, I was sad. And I have to admit that Geely's purchase of Volvo didn't inspire any confidence. But I was wrong, very wrong. It's great to see a Chinese company inject needed capital in Volvo while leaving design to the Swedes.

      It was a very smart move on geely's part. pump volo full of money, let volvo what it does best with large amounts of money, reap the rewards and the designs to implement elswhere. (see the new london taxis....notice something similar?)

    I just bought a new 2019 with 500 miles as a dealer car and I love it. This isn't the honeymoon of a new car, since I'm more of a sceptic. I've been comparing top end mid-size sedans for a long time and the drive in comfort, dynamic or if you set a custom/individual setting, you'll love it. Almost shockingly well rounded car!
    I didn't get the R, just the T6 AWD Momentum. Tons of tech, driver assist features, incredibly smooth drive, sporty enough for me and great mobile app.
    The UI was easy to master and the I don't have the B&W sound system, but the standard system is a reasonable 7.5/10. The digital instrument gauge/screen is plenty good.
    The seats and drive are miles better than the Mercedes C300. I had a C300 that was great, the S60 is much better. I was really surprised and impressed. To be honest, I'm not a speed guy, but I like to press it a bit and this is more than enough.
    The back seat is also much better than others in the class. I find the car much bigger than my C300 or A4. The result 9f the size, weight and wheelbase is a masterfully and smooth ride. This drives and handles like the E300 with much less roll.
    The customization of rlfratutes and driving functions are exceptional. I didn't expect to get a Volvo but thebblanacr of value, feature rich option packages and the distinguished look of this care set it apart from all others. Lots of compliments on the Pebblestone Gray color with 19" rims.

    Good review. Very impressive car! End of the video one can understand why it can hang in there with the big three.I think the R design T6 is the best balance of features performance and price. We have had 2 S60's and have an XC 60 now (along with a couple of other cars)I loved the previous S60's and can honestly say, our current XC60is the third best car I have owned, behind a Mercedes E500 and VW Phateon W12.....it is that good. I'm going to be looking at the T6 R design when my local dealership gets them in, as you say, it strikes the best balance of features and performance.

    • @lvthud
      @lvthud Před 5 lety +2

      Sorry, I should have clearer, the S60's were the 2 previous generations, they were bullet proof, the only issue we had was on the first one, the wife hit something on the freeway and damaged a control arm, I was actually able to replace that at home in an hour or so, other than that, nothing, the XC 60 has been good so far, no issues, well not quite true, if you have the Volvo app on your phone, it will tell you where the car is and where it has been, great in many respects, not so great if you are stopping to pick up a surprise present for the wife.......The seats (yet again, it's a common theme with Volvo's) are some of the most comfortable on the market, I have said this before in other reviews but if all car manufacturers just bought their seats from Volvo the world would be a better place.

Try to sit in a new Mercedes and use the tech in it and feel the build quality in the inside, the super plastic air flow direction thingies, the small displays, the hybrid digital and old styled gauges. As a Volvo S60 owner and an addict to the speed, I can tell you that Volvo in curves, is much, much better than any German car. Volvo spend a lot of money in security and safety, and when you need both at 180 hp/h in curves, you really want a Volvo in your hands. In straight line, any car could be speedy, like my Partner Maxi form Peugeot. But in curves, with tricky weather, and many other things, the speed is not an issue for the equation, other features are. Greetings!

      a 11 year old Volvo is better then the new ones for reliability. I had an 2003, only 2 nights in the shop in 15 years. My brother has 2 2012, both have had major problems. Both have had engine problems and required rebuilds under extended guarantee, then one needed a crate engine and turbo replaced on the drive after new engine and turbo the transmission died, 2 months later the breaks failed.
      I did not replace the 2003 with another Volvo. I like the looks and love the seats but I do not trust the new ones to hold up since I keep a car for 10 to 15 years. If you lease for 3 years go for it, any modern car should last 3 years. The test is can it go 10 to 15 years without major problem.

      Has been reliable as can be. Really good on gas. Nice and quiet cabin.. Ac works amazing, really good insulation on the vehicle imo. Bonus safest cars on the road. I’m a family man that’s a must. Idc how cheap Japanese cars are, or any other. My life is valuable as well as the people’s lives that I drive around or whatever.
      Nothing but simple oil changes. Refill fluids. New tires. Brake pads. Normal stuff.
      I’m about to do pcv, timing belt, and water pump. 300$ for parts.. these are due at 80-100k. My pcv and belt look great hence why I’m waiting for 100k or anyday I get the time to. I don’t drive crazy to start with so it’s never abused like I see a lot of people speeding from light to light. I’ll be doing the labor myself. These cars are mechanic friendly , you don’t need to be some licensed engineer to get down on these..
      If you don’t take care of your cars they won’t take care of you. I do an oil change every 3,000. Volvo manual says 7,500.. from what I know oil breaks down at 5k. If you do oil changes yourself it’s fairly cheap.

    • @ryand.3858
      @ryand.3858 Před 5 lety +1

      Martin Wehrend the additional weight is certainly a concern but I would argue that they’re more expensive to maintain. They’re really winding out these four cylinder engines, especially with a twin charged setup like Volvo has gone with. It’s a new engine so the jury is still out on long term reliability but I’m skeptical that it will be better than their previous larger offerings.
      A big V6 or V8 doesn’t return the kind of fuel economy that you get with a four but it’s also not working very hard cruising down the highway either. A good example is GM’s LS family of V8s-primitive and heavy but powerful as hell, simple, and extremely reliable.
      Long term reliability isn’t a concern if you’re just going to lease it for three years and dump it, but if you like to own your car and keep it around for a while then it’s very important. If it turns out to be a viable setup then kudos to Volvo, but it doesn’t hurt to be cautious when you’ve got skin in the game.

      @@Vallecaucanisimo I'm a hybrid vehicle algorithms engineer. I know what setup works long term, and what fails. Forced induction and PHEV is a controls nightmare. Think of the complex transition between different engine states, and EV mode to meet the drivers power demand in the most efficient way.

    • @adithyaramachandran7427
      @adithyaramachandran7427 Před 5 lety +1

      I'm ok with a 4 cylinder turbo as the base, and agree that it will be on par with what the competition offers. Superchargers for performance work better for larger engines, not smaller ones, which is why I also mentioned a supercharged V6 (which can make 400+ HP if done right). Another option would be Twin turbo V6, which once again can easily achieve 400+HP.
      The issue I brought up is specific to the Turbo, supercharged PHEV. Turbo and supercharging a 4 cylinder and give it a PHEV makes it seem like engine reliability and fuel economy will suffer. Most people go PHEV for the fuel economy benefit and all electric drive, not for how powerful the engine is. Successful PHEV's on the market do not have forced induction engines, and use the electrical powertrain to make up for the lack of power. The engine just acts as a Range extender to provide propulsion power and keep the battery sufficiently charged. This technology would also assist Volvo's vision of expanding their electrification capability, which is sort of their corporate goal at this point.
