In this video We go through and take a look at an AA5001 distortion analyzer. This is the 5000 series unit based on the AA501 and AA501 A units. These are quite similar. This one was giving another Tech some trouble and needed to be gone through. So it will get the fill treatment as well as an alignment before heading off to continue life as a distortion meter.
** Repair exposes the Tech to mains electric and should only be done by trained personnel. Errors can be fatal. **

My AA501/01 has two rear interface connectors. I think it's a late one. It has the 22-22kHz and CCIR filters, and RMS and IMD options.

The option 1 is what is giving it CCIR and changed the filters if I remember correctly. There was a way to order an AA501 with SMPTE or CCIR or both if I recall correctly. OP1 and 2 Both added IMD. There was also a variant that was made for radio service IMD was replaced with SINAD this was sometimes sold as the DA4084

Hey Zen would I be able to use this peice of equipment to measure the distortion of audio amplifiers?

That is one thing the AA501's are made for. You would want a load for the amp but put the AA501 across a dummy load and the amp will let you know when it is distorting. The only hard part is the AA501's take a few seconds to stabilize. You would also need to get a low distortion source to drive the amp as a AA501 is just a meter and does not have a source. The usual source is a SG505. Though an SG502 could also be used depending on the distortion level of interest.

@ZenwizardStudios thank you for the information! I do have a 502 but I'll have to keep an eye out for a 505 as well. I honestly did not know about that model. There's so many 500/5000 series plug ins!
I've been toying with the idea of recording my audio repairs and uploading them to CZcams so people can learn more about the units I have as there is not a lot of information on them. I thought it would be unique to measure the distortion on them and compare it to their specs since I normally dont see that in the videos I watch.

    SMPTE is often pronounced "simp-tea"
