Pcie standard: its gigabytes now
MSI: Our motherboards can take a beating. It survived an LTT video.
Probably the weakest mobos you could think of buying
I have tomahawk max, best mobo ever!
@Tom Smith updating bios is always risky on any motherboard, from any manufacturer, at any age. Never update bios unless you need something only a bios update can provide.
@Tom Smith 1. this is not true. In fact, many manufacturers recommend against updating bios. Msi says explicitly in their support page “MSI do not recommend to upgrade BIOS if system works stable”. Both asrock and asus state that updating your bios may result in your system needing servicing. Not one person in the first 2 pages of search results did I find that recommends updating bios. Everyone except like 2-3 people were explicitly against updating bios.
2. The reason why bios updates are dangerous to your pc is because bios uses read only memory (ROM). ROMs need to be flashed, which is a lot more dangerous than writing to a drive. This is because the bios are designed to not be changed at all under normal use (prevent bricking pc from malware, misuse, bugs, glitches, etc.). The bios ROM is not designed to be flashed.

This is the first video of yours I actually really enjoyed. Great information coupled with your personality toned down is the way to go Mr. Linus.
Given how modern rendering works, I would generally expect more improvements from Gen4 on older rendering engines that are getting pushed to their limits. Newer rendering engines often don't communicate that much between the CPU and GPU every frame. Compared to older engines where significant amount of data could be sent to the GPU every frame. This makes me expect to see a significant performance improvement in Minecraft java edition. I would also expect to see an improvement in hardware accelerated rendering of websites.

It would be awesome to see you guys test workload times for Agisoft Metashape. I feel the biggest difference would come from PCI GEN 3 M.2 compared to GEN 4. Given the bottleneck is the transfer speeds for some of the processes. Currently I'm getting 1200MB/s max (which isn't bad) but my rated spec is 3500MB/s. Now that I have a GEN 4 drive (7000MB/s rated) on my old ROG X470 it made no difference (by my fault for forgetting my board was only gen 3) but logic tells me, if I am bottlenecks at drive speed my ROG B550 "Should" make a difference. Unfortunately I'll be the only one to test and find out.

"It's a stress test, You wouldn't want it if it breaks easy" - Linus ROG Reboot
"but a theory is just that. A theory"
No that would be a hypothesis. A theory (at least a scientific theory) doesn't become fact it always stays a theory. A well tested theory is the highest an idea can go in the scientific method. The fact that a theory remains a theory is its proof. It means it has not been able to be disproven
Make less sense.
@@daathgnosis2098 He's right.
A theory is the highest honor any idea can achieve in science, you just can't get better than that.
Only theories have the power to make predictions, a good example of this was the solar eclipse of May 29 1919, where Einstein predicted the bending of light by the Sun's gravity, proving right his theory of general relativity.
You can be sure that if anything is a theory, you could bet your life on it remaining true.
Also, if a theory ever gets replaced, it gets replaced by a new one that explains the same the old one did AND more.
3:40 It's just "for some reason", it's because it's 400FPS! Every frame the CPU needs to give the new locations of every mesh, the new animations frames, load in textures / new meshes that are visible, and overall just update the visibility graph of the entire scene, including animating particles etc. At 90FPS, that's not a lot of data, and PCIe isn't bottlenecking performance. But at 350-400FPS, that's enough transfers per second of data from CPU->GPU that it's actually saturating the PCIe slot.

“We need to put it to the test.” Linus has tested gravity on multiple occasions. Sorry anti-gravity faithfuls.
I guess you would see a big difference for application that transfer a lot of data from CPU to GPU or viceversa. Serious applications try to minimise these transfers because they are a big bottleneck, so the difference is not big for already optimised programs.
You could try measuring a single cudaMemcpy call and see if that alone doubles the speed. But again, good programs have a very few of those calls.
Interessting info. I'd like to know if the comparison changed the ssd's involved. PCIe4 almost doubles the r/w speed compared to PCIe3. Obviously, if your os is mounted on a 2xfaster ssd some numbers will improve. By a lot. The best next gen PCIe5 ssd will typically r/w at 13000/12000 as compared to the best PCIe4 r/w speeds at 7500/6500, and PCIe3 that maxes out at perhaps 4500/3500?
