  • Jupiter's Legacy marks Netflix's first foray into the comic book properties acquired from Millerworld. With two stories running parallel, one in the 1930's and the other modern day it explores the concept of, what if Super Heroes but ethics and real world and also consequences or whatever. Anyways this is out review, thanks for the support!

      @@ancientaxolotl1654 idk about the whole show, I liked the fact that it left you wanting more each time it finished the 30s scenes I think they probably just should’ve left the modern day stuff to a cliff hanger, because it felt rather weird to have everything wrap up neatly. But you gotta remember these shows probably have to have this stuff for studio mandates, since they don’t think viewers would want a show set in the 30s entirely

      3.This shows early on that it wants to take a more realistic approach on our real world and a more old comic book style approach to the superhero’s fights and scenes with there powers.

      The big problem I had with the Code stuff was that it seemed unlikely that they hadn't dealt with a situation like this already - a villain with a suicide bomb or about to kill someone, accidentally killing someone by throwing them through a wall because they thought they were superpowered but they were actually just a normal human, etc.
      I think that as you say, it would have been better to focus more on the conflict over that and make it more relevant, e.g. create ambiguity over whether a character used excessive force against a villain who had already been subdued, etc.

    • @kayceee6770
      @kayceee6770 Před 3 lety +2

      I feel like this was a source of neglect that they were so held up by this code and the public image of it all that they cost more lives to up hold the no killing that they hardly even cared about the deaths. Utopian cared more about his daughter attending a funeral for public image and himself as Utopian than if it was the right thing for her or for her deceased friend.
      Certain elements felt more false and corporate than The Boys heroes. Doesn't seem like many people have a say or if there is a council, most of the young heroes feel like live bate than actual people since they'll be killed like the first episode and no one has a single reaction to their deaths. Like 3 or 4 die at the beginning and Utopian acted as if they were never there. He only reacted when his son saved everyone by decapitating Darkstar but care about a Villain dying over the heroes he should be protecting as the head.

    It seemed like the boys or umbrella academy but I just didn’t get the father being so against killing a villain that had just killed three of their hero’s and was about to kill the rest of them until the son struck him so hard with his fist that it killed the villain. Instead of the dad being appreciative he kind of scolded the son for killing. I guess he had a little bit of Superman /Batman mentality

    • @KeithFraser82
      @KeithFraser82 Před 3 lety +2

      The Utopian seemed so inflexible and such a bad father and leader (he didn't know the real names of some of the people on his own team, including his son's best friend, he didn't know his son was the godfather to his friend's daughters, he barely seemed to register the deaths except as "fallen soldiers") to me that it harmed my suspension of disbelief.
      One interpretation I had was that the older characters had grown up during/after World War 1 and some of them at least had picked up a pacifist mentality which was relatively common in the 1920s/30s. But they never really say that, and thinking about it, they brought guns on the expedition, which doesn't really fit with that. I think it's more likely that it was just, as you say, a transposition of the trope of Superman and Batman never/rarely killing, which a lot of other superheroes don't really adhere to (if you look at the MCU, many of the heroes there kill people left right and centre).

      I felt like Brandon's first scene (sitting incognito in the diner in a hoodie, going and fighting the bank-robbing supervillain alone) set him up as a more dark and rebellious character, but then afterwards he feels very focused on trying to live up to Sheldon's expectations, in contrast to Chloe. It feels like any guilt or conflict over him killing Blackstar('s clone) gets brushed aside by all the repetitive arguing about "the Code". There could have been a more interesting story/debate there e.g. his killing of Blackstar being "justified" along the lines of a police sniper shooting dead a bomber or school shooter but indiscriminate killing of supervillains in the vein of real-life police brutality not being justifiable, as opposed to "HE BROKE THE CODE!" "THE CODE IS BAD!" "NO IT ISN'T!" "YES IT IS!".

Most of her character just seem wasted being a junkie when she could have been an anti-hero or an actual person than a boring loss cannon. Sheldon didn't tackle family problems and became more of the alterego than who he was like Bruce Wayne being Batman's alterego thing. Brandon seemed more interesting but that way just that edgy I wanna live up to something deal than actual interesting character. He just seems like a duller version of Utopian after ep2, like one day he was like yh I agree with ma dad's code even though my friends keep dying my fam don't care.
      Utopian doesn't have an opinion that doesn't fall in line with his superhero self. He just seems cold, too much alterego not much Sheldon. His wife seems the same and lack her own character just as much in light of a code they follow jeopardising their followers and only switches cuz she realises she's costing people lives but only cared when someone that was closer died spewing they didn't break no code. It just feel like moral high ground that's cost is lives than solving problems.

Imagine if they told the the Civil War story to kick off the MCU with cuts back to Iron Man and First Avenger while Cap and Tony were arguing. We’re obviously going to care less about the characters if we haven’t seen them develop. We need to see who they are and how they got there to care about where they’re going. This should have been two seasons or one longer season told chronologically. It would make all the twists more engaging and less flat if we actually cared about the Walt-Sheldon-George dynamic before we knew it broke. Such a weird film making choice.

What exactly did they sacrifice?? After Walt and Sheldon's dad died, nobody of the 6 had anything left lose. Grace was fired, the factory worker was fired, Walt and Sheldon lost the factory, George lost his fortune, Richard Conrad lost his entire ship. This is unrelated to the "sacrifices they made on the island" which was what, having to get along? Not murdering each other? Also the scene where Walt, George and Sheldon have to "forgive" each other by looking at one another for 10 seconds was 1) incredibly dumb 2) wasn't even true! Walt still resents Sheldon and Sheldon still doesn't listen to anyone after it.
    The writers just feel like they have something to say about superheroes in the present (but never quite get there) and keep cutting to this adventure story with no deeper meaning whatsoever. I'm just not sure what the point of all of this was.

    I don’t understand the timeline. The US had 6 superheroes and the German guy gets called a Nazi. The US had 6 superheroes and they still let the Holocaust happen?

      There was a scene where one of the Union said "we could have done a lot more to end the war" or similar, so yes, it sounds like the war happened more or less similarly to real life.

    It was one of the few shows that legit put me to sleep throughout episodes.
    Only other show to do that was season 2 of Iron Fist.

    It's not even a bad show imo people just expect big villian fights and for it to be like the boys or invincible

    What I hate about the Flashback scenes were they didnt add anything new to the plot about the orgin of their powers. Who gave them the powers ? Alien? God? Why they were given powers? Why people who didnt travel to the island or not related to the orginal heroes got super power? Who came up with the code? They couldve expanded more from the comic book.

    It may be because I've watched them in such close proximity, but I feel like Jupiter's Legacy makes for a good companion series to Invincible. Because if you boil it down to the bare essentials, they have the same premise: "what if Superman was my (bad) dad?" But what's interesting is they take completely opposite approaches.
    ***SPOILERS for Invincible***
    The Utopian has this honorable code he upholds over all else. Never kill, and never interfere with human affairs, since it would be unfair and we need to let the Earth make its own decisions. Omni-Man, however, we find out is something of an asshole. He believes (as an extension of his people's philosophy) that humans are too tiny and stupid to act in their own self interest and be allowed to govern themselves. It would be better for them long term if some super beings came along took away their freedom.
    And in both series, it's the actions of their sons that pulls them a little closer to center on their ideals and that conflict is a big plot point for their characters.

    So the original 6 are around 100 years old. I get that they age slowly but why did they wait so late in life to have kids. It seems like they all have kids in their 20s. Given their ages you would think they would be great grandparents. Why didn't any of them start having children shortly after getting their powers?

    The swift cancellation of this series demonstrates that Netflix really needs to rethink its strategy for greenlighting and ending shows.
